The rivets and the "turn in" design are mainly for your protection and not for protecting the axe. Fall on the axe and the edge will be stopped by the rivets in the sheath. But you got a file and stone with you and will have that edge looking good in no time at all. If the edge goes through you run the risk of severly hurting your self, perhaps several hours from the nearest hospital.
The occasional 's' in the end of the name is because of possessive pronouns in Swedish. For example: Gränsfors Bruk is the company name, but when saying one of their axes, they often say, Gränsfors Bruks forest axe. Which basically is Gränsfors Bruk's forest axe, but in Swedish we don't put the this ' between the word and the s. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
NOTE: The stock sheath has a protective leather lining on the inside, over the rivets, so it never comes in contact with them. Clearly visible at 8:17 . Damaging the axe in the sheath is therefor not an issue. You'd think the Swedes know their stuff. And they do. Like my 20 year old Optimus Nova; Built to last.
It really isn’t a good quality sheath. Great axe but the leather is too thin. Ended up making my own sheath for it. Also, rivets work fine but for an axe going on 200 bucks I’m gonna go with stitch work every time.
Just received my GB scandie forest axe, and the sheath/mask is surprisingly poor, compared to my Hultafors premium which is my only other decent axe. It's functional, but very thin, stiff leather and a bit rough around the edges. Honestly the whole axe is less well finished than the Hultafors. Quite surprised and a bit disappointed as the GB was more expensive.
Bought mine at a local backpacking store around 15 years ago. I saw this new item in the window for $95 and it went home with me. Seeing now they’re still difficult to find and selling often above $200 I fell like I made the right choice. It’s been a worthy companion on overnight to weekend trips and easily the best tool among my friends for building a good fire. Like the video says, the weakest point is the sheath! If these are these still for sale I’ll buy one from this fellah
I just wanna day somthing.... this video may be old but I just bought 2 sets...(sheaths and axe guards) from ROC... the absolute best axe sheaths and guards on the market....!!!!! Totally impressed and totally satisfied...!!! Thank you so much Eugene!!!! And if it matters I got a set for my Huskvarna carpenters axe and a set for my brand new Council Tool woodcraft pack Axe in 24”.... PERFECTION!!!!!
Yes Sirie, Even though our winter broke all kind of record as been one of the warmest. I still would of wished I had the Scandinavian Forest Axe instead of the Small Forest Axe, I'm not really complaining because the S.F.A. stood up to the test, I think it's time for me to upgrade. I do have a 26" Estwing and I liked that size when we process alot if wood. Especially when chopping down a dead tree. But I really like the portability of my S.F.A. I can harness the Scandinavian Forest Axe like I carry my 26" Estwing, That's probably why I don't rush getting it and besides I'm also checking out the Hultafors Bruks ones too. Great video Eugene, Thanx any imput would be appriciated.
I did EXACTLY what you mentioned with the sheath about 2 days after owning mine and it did put a vey slight Nick in the blade. Glad to see that you guys have options available for replacement sheaths. I'll be looking into getting one soon.
Very good ax! I hope i have it someday. But! Regarding sheath from amazon. I think that the sheath don't have rivets in front of the blade is not really good idea as you say. Ok it's a nice blade but it's just a tool. From safety reason. What is better to cut yourself or small damage in your blade? When I was still a scout I saw with my own eyes when a guy fell on someone’s backpack. There was a knife with sheath in the backpack. The knife cut the sheath and cut something in the backpack and backpack and stabbed the boy between the ribs. luckily there was still so much material in between that it only stabbed 5mm. He was extremely lucky.
100% you need one in your trade. I use one everyday for forestry and it’s a must. Clearing brush to building shelters, I’ve even skinned with it because it holds a razor edge.
If you are in the market for an axe of this size, than visit Ike at Wolf Valley Forge for a custom built Canoe axe, or any of his other axe models. I have the Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, but the craftsmanship of the axe is nothing compared to Wolf Valley Forge’s axes.
Beautifully done video; I picked up mine Tri State, Coeur d'Alene. Not only functionally sharp, light and high-carbon Swedish steel, but a work of art that I proudly adorn the wall of my winter abode. The blade is so sharp that I inadvertently sliced into the sheath. How do I pick up your sheath?
Hello Eugenie ! I clicked on the link but it seems like there is not possible to buy the beautiful sheet from YAE at the moment ? Is more on the way perhaps. Fantastic videos you put up here on youtube,, many thanks to you !
They do come shaving sharp. I had to wait 3 months for my Swedish Carving Axe and it was worth every second. I have the SFA here too, and I love it also. I think this manufacturer is superior and plan to gift a couple to my brother and brother-in-law this Christmas. You are absolutely right about the sheath. When my SFA came, the shipping had bumped it around and the axe actually cut through the sheath and rivets! The sheath was replace, free, but the axe did have a chip on the edge where it cut the rivet. :p
What species of pine was that? These YT videos show the axe cutting softer trees. Try it with oak, hickory, iron wood, full grown persimmon and impress me..
That leather work is tight. It would be cool if a faller sheath (its more like a bucket that you dump the axe into on your belt) and wedge pouch were made with that attention to detail and craftsmanship
I checked and their out of stock, But how much are they ? Thanx in advance, I see you have a nice set going for yourselfe, This G B and the Benchmade Bushcrafter #162, All you need is either a Bob's Buck Saw or the Wicked Tough Saw, I have the Wicked Tough Saw as my on person carry folding saw, It's as tough as the name, I can even lite chop with it, but what I really like is that I can carry it open in the opened possition in the sheath when I'm building a shelter or my bed or when I'm processing firewood, You'd be surprised how good that feature is on a folding saw, Yet I also wear it as part of my Trio on my Survival Belt, very comfortable on person carry, , ,
That is not a bad wait time I remember 6yrs ago when I got mine I'd waited over a year to get mine.I love it and I unfortunately haven't gotten the chance to break mine in
I just got my wildlife hatchet and im a little dissappinted I didn't get this one instead, they feel so light in the hand I was expecting to need a smaller option
the GB OEM sheaths have a welt on the inside that would be difficult to cut through to the steel rivets with any amount of dropping the axe on it's cutting edge while sheathed, imo. your sheaths are indeed beautiful handiwork, nonetheless
Thanks for pointing out the major downfall of the stock sheath. I wouldve never realized that haha. I will for sure buy one of yours for my next gransfors bruks axe!
It’s really not a downfall, it’s designed like that for a reason. If you happen to fall onto your axe or something like that the blade will hit those soft brass/copper rivets instead of popping through and slicing you up. It only takes a few minutes to put an edge back on the blade, it also doesn’t take long to bleed out lol.
Actually you will find that the axe won't damage the sheath very much because after a couple of months of use the sheath will loosen up and the axe will fit in without cutting into the back of the sheath. You just have to be very careful in the beginning. But I agree, even though the sheaths are good they are by far not on the same level as the axes themselves.
Very entertaining and informative review, have my subscription. I feel, however, that you are only criticising the sheath because you are trying to sell your own version. My family has had this very axe for well over 50 years and not once has the blade been damaged by the metal things (due to the leather being extremely tight close to the metal things) nor is the sheath even slightly damaged. The only way I imagine the blade/sheath possibly being damaged would be if you were to completely forget about the sheath being on and make a full-on swing. It feels like you try to find flaws that do not really exist because you want to make $16.99. Still a very good review though.
Hey guys just wanted to let you know that I got my Sheath for my AXE and wow what an amazing piece of work. I did a quick review on the sheath along with a few other things I got to go along with it. Thanks again guys and keep up the good work.
I wish you made sheaths for the splitting maul from gransfors bruks. It is the one the probably needs a sheath the most since the supplied one really is lacking.
I am a HUGE fan of GB axes! I do have a question though, how would, Eugene (I hope I spelled that right), how would you compare the Scandinavian Forest Axe to the Small Forest Axe? I'm looking for how they perform and what tasks one can do that the other can't, not just that the handle on one is so many inches long as opposed to the other. Thanks, and indeed, Praise the Lord for all He has given us! Jed Heinrich
+Jed Heinrich Hello! Yes, you got the name right. The Scandinavian is definitely capable of performing larger jobs - its easier to chop with it just because of the longer swing and heavier head. I like it in all aspects except that It's not as portable as the small forest axe. I would says thats the real and only difference.
Within a month of owning this axe, I took it camping. The Mrs. thought she'd have a go at splitting some kindling, and without delay, she smashed the sheathed head into a piece of birch. One of the rivets popped out, the axe cut the sheath and the axe also got a chip out of it. So, yup... Sheath with rivets right through is an issue, and it does happen.
@@ReviewOutdoorGear I ve got a problem wich size of holster i need for the hunting axe because we have the metric system not imperial little tip btw ;)
Because I want a Sheath for my Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor Range Hatchet I got it as a closeout at a good price, But I got it spot on, the wood is as good as on my G B Small Forest Axe and the bevel was even, All it took was a little time to put as good of an edge aa my S.F.A. I live in the UK and am in the process of purchasing a Gransfors Bruks Ray Mears Wilderness Axe, would you be able to supply me with one of your quality sheaths
Squeeze the sheath on the sides and it clears the sheathand won’t cut into it, wetterling sheaths are the same way. But you are right the steal rivets are a problem
Ouch $46 sheath? Any new year discounts on the sheath? I cant wait for my GB Scandidnavian FA to get here. my axe carries with it a tale aswell , for i once thought it to be destroyed as my home perished in the flames of a fire , but when I stood among the ashes , a glint caught my eye and I pulled from the ashes the axehead of my trusted companion. the handle was eviscerated but i polished the Axe head and after 3 days of labour it sparkled like the jewels of king Solomons treasure. I replaced the shaft and the rest is history . To this day i carry my axe with pride and it shall remain one of my most prized possessions untill my dying breath , then it shall be passed to my son to continue the legacy .
Your products look very well done... i have the axe holster in the shopping cart, but i want to know if there is a coupon code (or how to get it) before i check out... thanks!
Thank you Matt! We don't have coupons quite yet. Perhaps we will have sales on our products from time to time, but as of now, we're barely keeping up with the demand. 2-3 man team here. Thanks for your understanding!
The Mask he made for the axe is much better. My nephew found it when I lent it to my dad and chopped through a rivet. I used a Tormex to thin the cheeks before sharpening to keep the narrow profile the axe is able to bite as deep as before.
+ReviewOutdoorGear sorry for late reply brother I'm in the U.K. and get all my axes from The woodsmith experience. co. UK have a look at there site, if your interested in Bushcraft or green woodwork you'll be in your element lol. I ordered it on the Saturday and received it Monday. atb Shane. liked and subbed btw
A review of this review: The guy doesn't really explain why aspects of the axe are good or bad. He just points out obvious aspects of the axe you can see clearly on the screen. "This axe has a nice handle" "This axe has a nice head" "This axe has a nice-" We get it! That isn't helpful to anyone. Explain why the head shape is superior to lesser axes. Compare and contrast with other similar axes and why this one is better or worse for certain uses and who this axe might be for. Simply rattling off some boring statistics and stating the obvious doesn't make for a good video. I'm not here to rip on you or your chanel. I'm just trying to give you some feedback.
+UsernameUser and he faisl to mention that this axes costs the same as 4 axes because peopel have figured out that peopel just buy whats most expensive! like apple, canada goose and shitbrands liek that!
+bent540 Ok...But apple and canada goose don't leave a 20 years warranty on their products...and they don't put the tecnichans name on each computer or jacket. The axes are expensive because they are well made with attention to the product, each smith puts his dammned name on the axe head..they stand for their product.
Lmao... i have been using my Gransfors Bruks Splitting Maul almost daily since December 13th of 2013. I have four wood piles made using ONLY that axe, 3 of those piles are 6 feet long and 5 feet high, and one is 9 feet long and 3 feet high; all oak, hard maple, cherry, and hickory. I have not once sharpened it, not even a strop, and it still shaves my arm. You just got a bad heat treat on yours, let them know and they will replace it.
thanks We been looking .... and Helps with short video guess they say picture 1000 words I thing Video is better we do a lot camping this will be great and I got all 3 as a set (AXE, Sheath, Handel guard) to keep Axe a life time
You are wrong about their sheath. The rivets can never come into contact with the axe because there is a strip of leather sandwiched in between the sides of the sheath that extends back toward the cutting edge and acts as a "bumper." Your sheath doesn't even look like it has that vital strip of leather sandwiched in there.
Excellent point
I thought the rivets were to prevent the blade from coming through the sheath if you fell on it and cutting you.
The occasional 's' in the end of the name is because of possessive pronouns in Swedish. Which basically is Gränsfors Bruk's forest axe, but in Swedish we don't put the this ' between the word and the s. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Just imagine how having your name and face presented to the customer instils pride in the work you do... that's where quality comes from...
I bet you look at your axe way more than you use it.
Where is the best place to purchase this axe?
links in description
ReviewOutdoorGear there are links for the excellent sheath, but not for the axe.
I'm very sorry about that! Yes, now its there. Thank you for letting me know.
ReviewOutdoorGear Not a problem at all thank you!
Family Dollar
Apparently if you actually use it for like cutting down trees it breaks
the rivets on the gransford bruk axe are anodised aluminum not steel
i'll try it out some time
Wonderful video, very informative. Thanks!
Just ordered mine, should be here next Monday
Great review, kind of. Less pitching your sheaths and more cutting trees. But hey, I like money too.
thanks for a great review. Thanks also for keeping it clean and sharing your Christianity.
How can I get that sheath? They're out of stock on Amazon.
+Jacob Navarro , we are out at the moment. They will be back soon, within a couple of days.
Can you measure the eye, please?
what did that tree do to you? The axe is nice though. couldn't you hae done that to a dead tree?
Maxpower explanation here: ruclips.net/video/fqCpV0rzCag/видео.html
do you have a sheath for the ray mers wilderness axe?
+Southerngunner 87 we don't have that axe specifically - is the head identical to the GB small forest axe?
The Mask he made for the axe is much better. My nephew found it when I lent it to my dad and chopped through a rivet. I used a Tormex to thin the cheeks before sharpening to keep the narrow profile the axe is able to bite as deep as before.
just got my sfa today forged by Ulrik Nilsson ☺
Randal Flagg , good work! Where did you buy it?
+ReviewOutdoorGear sorry for late reply brother I'm in the U.K. and get all my axes from The woodsmith experience. co. UK have a look at there site, if your interested in Bushcraft or green woodwork you'll be in your element lol. I ordered it on the Saturday and received it Monday. atb Shane. liked and subbed btw
Convinced for the axe. Like your calm way of speaking in this speed macho world. No blisters after chopping all that wood behind you 😂
Awesome review! Love this axe!
where I can found gransfors bruks axe in Arabic country
How much is the sheath?
+Wyoming Slabjacking $16.99 but I would not recommend buying it. The original one is just fine
+homerun443 40 bucks now.
Do you have a license for that axe 🪓
Yes.
Those sheaths are stunning!!!
A review of this review: The guy doesn't really explain why aspects of the axe are good or bad. He just points out obvious aspects of the axe you can see clearly on the screen.
"This axe has a nice handle"
"This axe has a nice head"
"This axe has a nice-"
We get it!
Thanks for your suggestions, will think about this in the future.
ReviewOutdoorGear Looking back on my comment, it came across as rude. I'm sorry for being unnecessarily gruff.
***** Some people like owning quality products and are willing to pay more for them.
You're no more a man for using cheap products, you're just poor.
Why did you cut down a live tree ??
Many reasons
So let's see how the edge held up if it's like my Grandfors axes it will be nicked and chipped from just that bit of work.
You must have bought knockoffs.
He bought a Gransfors you bought a Grandfors 😂😂
Sounds like poor heat treat to me.
Lmao... i have been using my Gransfors Bruks Splitting Maul almost daily since December 13th of 2013.
Matt McLoughlin well said!
do you have the sheaths for husqvarna axes on amazon as well?
+Nicholas Maynard yes, those are listed as soon as we have them available. Coming soon!
Great video man, subscribed!
Got Same axe same smith
Thanks.
I got your sheath I havent used it yet but I know it will work good
Your sheaths are amazing bought one for my husqvarna really makes the axe pop
Yeah, because the looks of an axe are so important.
thanks We been looking .... and Helps with short video guess they say picture 1000 words I thing Video is better
we do a lot camping this will be great and I got all 3 as a set (AXE, Sheath, Handel guard) to keep Axe a life time
You are wrong about their sheath. The rivets can never come into contact with the axe because there is a strip of leather sandwiched in between the sides of the sheath that extends back toward the cutting edge and acts as a "bumper." Your sheath doesn't even look like it has that vital strip of leather sandwiched in there.
The sheath won’t dull your axe lil bro. The rivets are fine .
love the small forest axe! great video:)
Dig the Red sheath
