- It's being reported that in the next few months NIkon is coming out with a new "retro" style camera. Is this finally an update to the Nikon Df from 2014? Or is this something new? Our hope, its a Nikon Df2 or the Dm! The Nikon Df is a specialized camera with features that were limited. But can a limited, retro style camera from Nikon hold up well in 2021 or 2022? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Nikon would sell a lot of full frame Fuji XT styled cameras with Z6ii capabilities. Doesn't seem that hard.
I would buy that today
for sure! I think they may even go bold and maybe make an affordable crop camera version
If Nikon can do a retro SP rangefinder style body, APSC or Full Frame, they will sell a ton!
They need lenses with aperture ring , if not what's the point?!
if they make a camera under say $2K, I think itll sell a ton for sure
@@Eric_Rossi Really depends on the spec. Especially the Z5 is on sale for $999 now. And it has similar spec as the Z6 minus some video features and slower FPS.
Id much rather have an f-mount Df-2. I need that aperture ring. Z lenses are not condusive to a retro-style body.
Never understood the qualms with the Df's autofocus. I shoot sports with my Df all the time with an excellent hit rate. And poor battery life??? Mine lasts all day on a single charge.
For the Df-2 I want interchangeable focusing screens to really take advantage of that manual focus glass. That, and a 24mp sensor. 16 just doesnt really cut it anymore lol
yeah thats the thing others have brought up, even just the looks of the newer lenses on it just wont fit well lol. But I think Nikon is hardcore backing off the f mount, dslr line. But I guess well see right
Thanks for this...I'm an old school Nikon dude with a D750 but I remember the Df back in the day.
Depending on the price, I would consider getting one for my photojournalist camera collection!
I think it could be a good idea for Nikon, trying to get back some casual or street photography shooters that have gone away from Nikon, mainly to Fuji but also maybe to Micro 4/3 or even Ricoh GR. What I don't understand is why don't they release a 50mm equivalent DX Z lens, like the popular, cheap and small 35mm 1.8 DX. That would make this new camera more appealing. Edit, two days later: Apparently Nikon will be releasing two aps-c Z primes, 35mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8 It's a good start.
yes, 10000%!
Give us something fun and affordable for once
Nikon is among the one to make best affordable ones compared others, you can literally cop a z6 for 1k or less used !! Awesome lenses of S line selling for under 500$ . F mount lenses for less than few hundred dollars !!!
righttttt, thats what im saying lol!
Thank you for your input. I absolutely agree with you, either a Df2 (F mount) or a Dm (Z mount) would be extremely appealing. I have a D7000, D800 and Fuji XH1; love them all. For me, again, for my personal preference, one feature that made me turn my head to Fujifilm was the retro look, knobs and sturdy body. I am betting on Nikon to redefine street photography gear.
respect for still having the XH1! But yeah, they had a pretty close to perfect style for the Df, so we will see what they do shortly
The Df is an amazing camera, very intuitive as far as I'm concerned. I expect when it came out, all the haters never even tried using it, just read the spec. sheet ie no video so it got a bad reputation from the start. I love mine, I use it with vintage ai manual lenses and the image quality is astounding. It is expensive but its niche. I'd love to see Nikon come up with an updated model, compatible with f-mount lenses, smaller form factor, tilt screen, bluetooth etc,
I prefer DSLR and no video. There was no video in film days, concentrate on the stills, it is retro after all….Full sensor size with low iso of 64
I can not wait to see those reviews and just laugh at them lol!
I love my df it brought me back into photography after switching over to Sony. I’m a Nikon prime shooter now . Would be awesome if they had that body styling with say a 36 megapixel sensor great backup to my z7.
ahh so you want just a megapixel bump, I could deal with 36, why not!
@@Eric_Rossi I would like 650 megapixels so every panoramic photo I take is 15 pentabytes a picture and I need to use a Google server farm in Svalbard to do the stitching and then split the file on my iPhone into 730 equally sized photos so I only need to post once every 2yrs.
I'm on a different boat here, the Df grip was fine because old style shooting is usually with an underhand posture rather than a gripped one, and because it was onto vintage lenses the AF wasn't as good because it was meant for manual focusing most of the time. In a ML system the priorities change and i feel this one will be catered to hipsters streettogs rather than actual manual shooters like the Df meant to, hence why i think it will have Z6ii video capabilities and a very refined AF rather than anything special photo-wise.
Yeah I mean I guess thats fine, I dont think it was supposed to be manual focus based though. Its still a digital camera and Nikon had industry leading af capabilities at the time, so to cripple that I dont think that was their goal, especially at the price point it is/was. But I agree, itll be a shell of a Z6 to an extent for sure, but will it keep the video? I think we will find out in a few weeks!
@@Eric_Rossi In that regard you are spot-on, the Df was pretty expensive for what it was for low AF and the pre-AI tab switch wasn't enough to justify costing the same as a D700 in its heyday because the build quality wasn't that retro either (painted plastic buttons, rubber instead of leather).
Rumors suggest video so i am betting on it heavily although seeing a new sensor on it would be very interesting. Let's see what happens.
ERIC IS BAAAAACK yes grat video dude !!!
haha I've been back but just havent been inspired to make much! It's really dry out there right now content wise
@@Eric_Rossi yeah...I just sold my 80D & lnses & bought a G7X Mark III as my eyesight has me out of photography...and I just want to make some youtube content and a few private photos perhaps. I'll do my IG & tiktok on the phone from now on - I got the Samsung A52 5G
Ever since i learned about the Df ive been wishing for a mirrorless Z mount version with a 16 megapixel sensor.
I think mirrorless and Z mount is the way to go with this. Add in the recently announced pancake lenses and you have a nifty little travel/street/walk around camera. Somewhere between a compact and a bigger body regular camera. Might be a decent way to get people that aren't sure they want a bigger kit in to the ecosystem.
the only odd thing is that the lenses would look horrible on it lol, but yeah they are pretty sharp and would work well besides the looks
@@Eric_Rossi yup! They'd have to bring out a retro look lens or a skin maybe
Honestly I think the Z5 is what Nikon will base a new Df on.
Oh and one other thing many complained about on the Df was the little top LCD screen. The Df is literally the only camera in existence with full manual controls that has a top LCD that includes Lieca, Fuji, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Hasselblad, PhaseOne, Kodak, Lumix, Panasonic, Samsung, Pentax, GoPro, DJI, RED, Olympus, Minolta, lol none. Not one and I think that's why it's small, it's not a lot of space to work with.
It came in handy while driving and shooting at night.
They could even make the z6ii look retro with new retro looks . And the grip would be. A lot like the old motor on the f3 film camera bodies
If it's df2, I hope is small and light so it can a good 2nd body. Good for traveling etc
I've heard name may call Zfc, 24mega pixel, APS-C, with retro look FM2 or FE2, flip side screen at the back. Mirrorless for sure
So what lenses would the DM use?
Style-wise the Z-mount lenses would not fit at all. I wish Nikon would make digital Nikon SP camera, with the same mount it used to have.
Im hoping they come out with an f-mount adapter that autofocuses with D-series lenses.
Z lenses are some of the ugliest lenses out there
I think they throw away the care for style and go with the Z mount lenses, sadly lol. I mean optically, totally fine! But looks wise, yeah not gonna cut it. I almost wish they make it unibody, like a Lecia Q or Q2 and get a solid looking lens on it
@@Eric_Rossi Unibody would be great and with different version where only the focal length of the lens only varies: 24mm, 35mm and 50mm. would be perfect.
Also you could use video but it would include the focus reticle and only shot in 30p. You'd need to crop slightly. Wasn't worth it but you could shoot video with a Ninja or Cellphone and that little wireless thing.
yeah but if its that limited whats the point right?
@@Eric_Rossi Like the designer said, "it's for old people" 🤣
If they made a Leica M with built in EVF that would be a beast now you have a tiny camera built like a tank you can fit in your pocket with no camera bag etc
I've been tempted to switch from fuji to a Z6ii just because of the fast wide lenses ( for aurora photography) but I can't live with the idea of losing the feel of the fuji system. My first ditigal was fuji and my last film camera a Nikon F3, so if Nikon do produce a full frame with the right feel I'm all in to switch
have you used Nikon in the past or just always Fuji?
@@Eric_Rossi always used nikon 35mm cameras. My only digitals have been fuji
I'd like the Z mount and use it with a 50mm 1.8S
would you like the style or look of it though?
@@Eric_Rossi heck yeah, the Dr is still my favorite camera. I just started shooting videos and I'm not ok with something not getting use. The pandemic screwed up all my jobs 🤦🏾♂️ Had to go back to regular day time work.
I love the retro look and would want full frame, similar characteristics to my D780 (Z6II), would prefer slightly more megapixels (36mp) for richer landscapes, and would want video. Retro-look glass would be great also, not required. Mirrorless would be excellent. I would buy tomorrow. Would not want APS-C as I already have one of Nikon's best crop sensor cameras, D7100. Need low light capability.
Wake up Nikon, We need DM camera 😍
for sure!
@ 3:54 If this camera is to be aimed at the retro market, I think that 'no viewfinder' would be a fatal mistake.
Hopefully its a Df 2 i rly loved dslrs
I think well find out in the next few weeks, but with recent news saying they are not concentrating on the dslr line, I think this steers into mirrorless then. So I guess well just see, at least it gets us excited for something
@@Eric_Rossi true even if its a mirrorless it does looks nice
If they could sell a full frame vintage-styled mirrorless for under $2200, I'm in.
Nikon battery great ,menu great ,rugged bodies, great lens, best color in the business come on Nikon is great ..if I shoot all-day Nikon all the way.
Your topic ended up being Zfc? Or is there something more coming.
Why not a digital Nikonos ?
Please let this come
1.full frame
2.40plusmxpl
3.no video
4.1 card slot
5. Iso,ss,all in retro
Then I will be happy ever after.
The df is a good camera but way over priced foe what it is.
Loosing the viewfinder is a BAD IDEA without it you loose your primary stabilization mechanism
If your going to hold out a camera like a smartphone then use a smart phone
Honestly though, isnt every camera overpriced lol. The viewfinder thing and three points of stabilization isnt a huge deal in 2021 anymore, the cameras these days are so fast and stable it doesnt matter. Plus a camera like this would be street/hobby focused imo. But the last line there, nah, HIGHLY disagree. You cant just write off a camera like that just bc a shooter may prefer using the back screen over the viewfinder. You have to take into account what this type of camera would be focused for. If weddings and events, well sure but if street and fan, nah.
if the new camera is to follow a retro style, it cant be mirrorless/electronic viewfinder, it would feel like a toy and somehow too fake. It must have a optical finder of some kind.
Its not a retro camera if it has no viewfinder - all cameras from that era had viewfinders since there was no rear screen.
That's like saying it's not a retro camera because it doesn't use film. All cameras from that era used film. Lol
well then you have to define retro, retro styled etc. Just bc it has a screen, may or may not shoot video, doesnt mean its not retro or retro inspired. The viewfinder being removed, if so, is def a bold move but I dont mind with a camera like this if its made. Do you think Fuji cameras, like the X-Pro line, are retro or retro inspired?
