As a generalist myself i got to say you earned my repsect! Subs might be low now but dude..you will be in the trends soon.Just like i found this channel today so will many others do. Just respect!
This channel is way fucking underrated, it's not just the substance, the presentation of these advices and tutorials is by far the best I've seen, including the paid tutorials I've come across. Really good stuff man, thanks a lot
It sucks because I’m almost done with college and I didn’t know what I wanted to do until a couple months ago.. so I’m a self learner and I’m learning until I make it
Loved this! I remember way back when I was thinking about pursuing this field and I wish I had this video back then. I’ll definitely recommend this video to anyone I talk to who says they’re looking in to this stuff!
Maaaaan you are really the best!!, your tutorials also amazing and unique especially that one when you showed that 3ds max can show the image sequences while scrubbing the timeline, I really wanna say thank you for your help. waiting for your next tutorials also :D
Wow, that is one of the most useful videos I found on the subject. You have a very clear voice, logical approach, and a tad of humor! I really like that you added a bit on not being an a**hole =) Although it is more related to gaming industry, maybe you could comment on the skills/programs for an Environment 3D Artist and Texturing Artist? Thank you!
Thank u so much for the advice. I come from engineering field and been learning HOUDINI for few months and trying hard to master this software. I got no degree in animation so I am not sure I will get a Job now as FX artist.
awesome content on this channel :) . As someone who is wrangling the "800 pound gorilla" , the videos you showed at 11:00 are basically your "first hour" in houdini :) .
This is an incredibly powerful lesson. I would like to see something like this in the future. Do you have patreon? Or can you recommend some VFX tutorials?
Kind of. Unreal is crucial. It's free. its widely used. Learn it. Make that your focus. Then maybe some Unity on the side. Learn some basic programming when you can. Try to make something playable just to understand the systems. But remember that most studios have propriety software that will need to be picked up when you gain employment.
No studies don't matter much at all really. Its the work that matters. if you have an eye for what is actually good and put the time in to bring your work up to a high standard you can find work. Time and effort are all that really matter. That and hitting your deadlines.
Thank you for the advice. I've been lookng for something ths specfic for a while. Love the shirt too btw. Also I like your humor, I have the attention span of a potato, it keeps me focused on the talk. Quick question, Does Cinema 4d have no place within the VFX community/industry?
compositing may look easy but its the most stressed one and the hardest because its the very almost last part of the pipeline especially short schedule. even though the duty is just taking different elements from other departments, you have to wait for them to finish for a better result but if its a short amount of time for the dead line and other department is not done or bad renders then as a compositor its our duty to take the matters of our own hands to do the clean up to make it look like everything is covered by making 2D patches. I remember i have to stick to the bad render from the CG department and pull out an all nighter to repaint a CGI model because the deadline is about next day ahead lol.
I’ve had dyslexia since I was a kid. Took special classes and still went on to flunk out if Algebra 1 and 2. You can still have a career is vfx and suck at math.
Depends on a lot of things. Most Studios have all the options available with Mari and Substance being the top dogs. However Mari is mostly used on VFX shots that require insane details and have massive budgets. Mari was used on Avatar, Jurassic World and Battle Angle Alita for instance. However so was Substance. It all depends on what you are tasked with making and what tool is best for the job. Many intense CG assets are made by the best artists in the world on the best hardware in the world. Individual characters can equal hundreds of gigs of texture files when Mari is used because you need that detail. Everyone else doesn't have access to that kind of power. Pretty much the entire video game industry uses Substance.
Your half right. But “industry standard” is a tricky term. If you make to Weta, ILM, or other comparatively big vfx houses you will see Mari getting used. But everywhere I’ve ever been has used Substance Painter because it cheaper, easier to learn and it’s widely used through the gaming industry so more people know it. Mari can do a lot of cool stuff and if you’re texturing Thanos’s lips it’s the way to go. But when you’ve got a week to knock out a ton of work Mari just slows you down. Also you’d be surprised how many projects get screwed over buy the UDIM workflow. It’s technically still a hack and a lot of in-house tools can break them. But to each his own.
great video.... kudos man... but on the software side you forgot Mari for texturing, dumb AF compared to Substance but ultimately much more in-depth than Substance is or will be... i doubt that GoT dragons were textured in substance painter.:-))) And for tracking you forgot the real standard and that is 3D equalizer.... otherwise great video...
So is it worth it to learn a job that at the end of the day will make your life to stay 12 hours in front of a monitor, in an industry that is totally unstable, in a saturated market where vfx artists are being payed less than a tech, where OT hours are a constant, and every senior i heard lost passion along the way? And don't tell me if i prefer to work on Mc Donald because the skill a VFX artist has can be transferred in many other markets.
Wether it’s worth it or not is entirely up to you. But I will say that artists are generally paid pretty well. Depending on the company. OT isn’t that constant. Depending on the company. And senior artists can be some of the most driven people you come across. Depending on the person. Also 12 hour days are pretty rare. I’m not going to tell you where to work. That depends on you. But yeah the vfx industry is pretty unstable. And it because a whole lotta reasons.
Goddamn this channel is so underrated
Yeah. I think so too.
Fantastic video Dan, thank you for taking the time.

Yeah. I mostly just make this stuff to undermine the “fake tutorials” and generally unhelpful and unrealistic nonsense I come across.
It sucks because I’m almost done with college and I didn’t know what I wanted to do until a couple months ago.. so I’m a self learner and I’m learning until I make it
Mann this is so so much inspiring and one thing ill not forget 'never miss a f* deadline'
this shit is a fucking treasure. stumbled on this today, and this has been a huge help. please never stop makin vids

U deserve way more subs! VFX producer checked in here 🙋🏻♀️! ... 👍🏻
Great video
Damn this is rather informative and inspired, "Prepare yourself", thank u so much
Love your tutorial, colleges in our country don’t really teach stuff about the vfx industry which really helps me a lot.
who is this guy? Amazing guru!
Man, thanks. Really. Great rundown right to the points
awesome content on this channel :) . As someone who is wrangling the "800 pound gorilla" , the videos you showed at 11:00 are basically your "first hour" in houdini :) .
from my experience as a compositor and roto/paint artist , Nuke and mocha(2d tracking) is the best tool.
this info has like 500 views, the fuck youtube, why recommend a 10 year video to me, while i NEED THIS
such high quality stuff but only 4k subs? dude people been missing out
18.30 Brilliant! Thank you so much...
thanks for the information sir !
why this channel is soooooo underrated ? why youtube why ?
good points well made!
dude you are awesome really. Respect! :)
This is an incredibly powerful lesson. I would like to see something like this in the future. Do you have patreon? Or can you recommend some VFX tutorials?
Nope. No patreon save your money. But I do recommend Steven Knippings Applied Houdini Course.
@@TroubleShotVFX Thank you
High level of information here. Man, just make more 3ds max tutorials. Please.
Amazing
syntheyes is amazing.
Does this apply to game VFX as well? I am only interested in real time VFX.

Great advice! Where do you work?
You explain great
Thanks!
Hope it helps.
I felt like i needed to hear those words at the end of the video hahaha
What about paint and prep though?
"Prepare yourself!" in mortal kombat voice
Brother talk about the how to start vfx company
Abt houdini section is helirious!
do you work at mpc
Do you have to get good in studies to crack the VFX industry??? Please help cuz I'm very bad at studies!

Quick question, Does Cinema 4d have no place within the VFX community/industry?
So Houdini artists are more wanted then artists who know 3ds max out and in with simulations and modelling?
Yes. Much of the industry is moving towards Houdini. Unfortunately it’s the future we must all prepare for.
Was waiting for this one, composititing, probably the easiest one out, is my thing but I'll try to learn other things
I think that learning Nuke and Houdini is a pretty good combination, don't you?
compositing may look easy but its the most stressed one and the hardest because its the very almost last part of the pipeline especially short schedule. even though the duty is just taking different elements from other departments, you have to wait for them to finish for a better result but if its a short amount of time for the dead line and other department is not done or bad renders then as a compositor its our duty to take the matters of our own hands to do the clean up to make it look like everything is covered by making 2D patches. I appreciate u
Funny as hell
And many in the industry wonder how to get out :)
I also learned tracking in boujou..... I remember that awful software.
3d equalizer industrial standard of 3d tracking.
I have worked in the industry for 15 years and have never once seen 3D Equalizer be used at any studio.
👍
So I suck at math... Is this a good career for me?
I’ve had dyslexia since I was a kid. Took special classes and still went on to flunk out if Algebra 1 and 2.
You can still have a career is vfx and suck at math.
Ive heard mari is the standard in the industry... Hmmm...am i wrong??

Blender does camera tracking too, but then it's not industry standard...
2:38 Isnt Mari the Industry Standard? Keyword UDIM support. Nice video tho! :)
