  • Hollywood became a synonym for film industry. But VFX work for the biggest Hollywood blockbusters is quite often happening far away from Los Angeles or America. Have a look where it's possible to get a job as a visual effects artist, and work on the biggest films.

      There are three areas you can choose from:
      1. Art
      2. Technology
      3. Management
      For art, don't go take any CGI courses, first look for traditional art classes or photography and cinematography. You can catch up with the most recent CGI software knowledge in a year, but mastering art takes a lifetime. (Like being a poet is not about learning Microsoft Word is it?)
      For technology learn mathematics, programming, computer science and meanwhile specialize in CGI. Physics can be also useful if you wanna R&D for FX and animation.
      For management, you don't really need any school (however business or communication degree can help to find a job easier), start as a runner or intern, then work your way up.
      These areas are not completely separated, many people in the industry change jobs in time, for example starts as an artist, then digs into development, then ends up as head of R&D.
      Or the other way around: learns computer science, starts as a pipeline developer then helps out with junior art tasks and in few years ends up as lead artist.
      The most important part is, that if you have time to focus on study then always start with something that needs to be practiced: hand drawing, 2d animation, photography, etc. because it is easier to catch up with technology later if you have the experience on how to create quality. And in art there are no shortcuts: the more you practice the better you get.
      PS.
      If you are only interested in 3d animation then first buy the book - Roger Willams: Animator's Survival Kit.
      Start making short animation shots with free rigs in Maya (don't bother with other packages because unfortunately almost all character animation jobs in the industry requires Maya). If you are familiar with the basics and you are still confident that character animation is what you truly want, then take courses from Animation Mentor. It's not gonna be cheap, but worth it.

    • @rdoetjes
      @rdoetjes 4 года назад +2

      Generally VFX schools aren’t really they way to go, too many students and little innovation. Better is to study mathematics combined with computer science. That gives you an edge over the artists who generally aren’t really technically savvy. More and more studios hire cheaper artists from Asia where wages are low. But they look for supervisors and technical directors, to innovate and solve technical changes. I fell into the industry and I have an engineering background. When I worked on TV shows as a program consultant, I ran into VFX compositors. And I adored Nuke (made combining images easier than I did in assembler in the 80s and 90s). That knowledge and my technical skills translate well. I done some work for DNEG to develop a special motion tracker for a specific shot. For Masters is The Sky (soon to be realized) I developed software that could take scanned maps of Dresden, turn the shapes in svg and close them into 2D planes. Which I then brought into blender and extruded the buildings random. Used the green planes to put some particle systems on to put grass and trees on it.
      The TV biz demand high quality and high turnaround and that’s where the money is.
      Also studying applied sciences allows you to work in other areas. And VFX is movie business, so no guaranteed 365 days a year work. Majority gets more and more freelance (although TDs and technical vfx supervisors are on a permanent bases). But you’ll be able to also work in healthcare imaging, game studios and any other IT job.
      I for one do VFX parttime and I can be picky for the cooler projects because I also work as a developer for government or finance. I noticed that rates (or in my case bids) are getting lower and lower.
      So I now easily earn about twice sometimes three times as much in IT consulting (and no idiotic work hours) then I’m VFX.

    Indian companies and indian artists are working continuously in Hollywood movies including MCU sitting in India ... As a VFX student in India I know that ...
    BTW MPC Bangalore is one of the most important brunches of MPC
    And also in Haydrabad there is technicolor ... And lots of indian companies
    And nowadays India became one of the biggest VFX and Animation Hub in the world , Indian studios are working in many films within the world and not only the Hollywood ...

    while the worker does all the work & work 16 hour days. I wouldn't be surprised if the workers only get paid just slightly above minimum wage & struggle to make a living & pay rent.
    While the company they work for makes billions & get all the awards.

      No, If I work for a company that took part in, let's say Avengers Endgame or Infinity War, and I'm not being paid well, I would not be working for them anymore. I think they should be good paid, just to think that the computers the have to use are very expensive, the techniques they have to use maybe very original when solving problems, so, I don't think companies of let's say 500 employees, would dare to not pay well, when being part of a movie with 500 million in budget.

    • @JasonAdank
      @JasonAdank 4 года назад

      @@boriscuduco4377 if youre a junior, you will not be paid well by ANY of the studios. Some studios dont pay well period, like ILM. Once youre mid level (5+ years) you'll get paid a living wage. If youre really a hot shot and a senior you can do well. However vfx salaries and working conditions have been going down steadily since the early 2000's. As price wars continue, so will this trend. Eventually vfx work will be outsourced entirely to the cheapest country and you will be told to be thankful your working in vfx making a bowl of rice a day.

      I'm a 3D and VFX teacher from Barcelona and among our alumni who go on to work in the industry most actually go to London in entry level jobs. Don't despair, keep at it and keep improving your reel. Trying to get to know recruiters on, say, linkdin, also helps. You'll get here ;)

      @@nickzardiashvili624 thank u :) hopefully it'll be okay. There are a few internships, but haven't seen many entry level jobs in the 2D department (which is what i specialised in haha) roto/ prep used to be the best and easiest way into the industry. But now its all being done in india :/ which is really bad cuz theres no way in now, its definitely harder

      and once you get one, you wont be paid shit. Lots of unpaid overtime in London. Also you get to look forward to, at best, six month contracts and a lot of moving around. you'll be living out of a suitcase to stay employed.
