In this weeks episode we take a look at old mitten patterns, knitted with needle 1,5 mm (000 US) and work on a redesign to adapt them to more modern use and thicker needles.
The old mittens that we looked at come from Selbu and are featured in a very old book which was first published in the 1920s. We also talk about sizing and how you can achieve different sizes by changing needles.
Join us for a redesign and update session, and let us show you how you can modernize your old mittens.

Putting on mittens like those could only bring cheer to your day 💗
Oh I love the "error on purpose" concept. What a creative way to display humility.
I believe the Amish in the US have that tradition of always having a mistake in their quilts - to keep one humble. I love the gold and black colour combo in the new mittens.
That is true.
Yes, that is how I was introduced to that tradition too!
😊
I asked an Amish lady in Lancaster, PA about that and she said they would never be so arrogant and proud to think they have made no mistakes and would have to purposely add a mistake because the only perfect person is God. 😳 I apologized and went and found my place… 😎
@@janinemartin7024 I also remember hearing it from visiting the Shaker community museums. My grandmother would talk about the Shakers when I was little. From her knowledge, I became interested in them. They were fascinating and very inventive.
I love learning about the practical reasons behind traditional clothes.
Thank you for another lovely episode Arne and Carlos. There is always something to learn. Lovely to see the difference once the mitten is steamed, amazing. Take care .
You as well!
It was appropriate that I was watching your video on Norwegian mittens on the same evening I was watching ski jumping at the Olympics. Thank you for taking your time to show your technique for hiding mistakes.
😊
Since learning this steaming technique from you, I find it really lifts the finished garment to another level. A big thank you!
You are welcome!
This mitten is so beautiful! The colors are incredible.
Thank you!
I’ve been watching you both a while and learning the duplicate stitch has been a lifesaver when I find mistakes in my color work projects after they’ve been completed.
Love the mittens, both the dramatic and the quiet colorway :) I have long admired Selbu mitten designs...a must knit!
Arne and Carlos I love that you showed the size change going from one mm size needle to another would make. Also the steam, unsteamed mitten difference. Visuals are so helpful for me and I’m sure many others and both of you do them very well. Thank you for making learning fun
You are welcome and thank you for watching
I just wanted to tell you both how much I appreciate and enjoy your videos. The two of you are amazing (and you always make me smile). Your knitting inspires me to try patterns I have never tried. Thank you so much for all you do! Vicki
That is so nice to here Vicki!
Love the mittens, I have knit one pair of Selbu Mittens a few years ago, they are very warm. What a great story about making mistakes on purpose , great video guys, thank you!
Love the pattern and tips for reinterpreting vintage designs using a thicker yarn.
👍🏻
Wow!! This has been so helpful! There really is a beautiful difference in how full the stitch appears! Thank you, once again!! 💙🤍💙
You are welcome!
I love the small amount of rib on the mittens, thanks to you both, I seem to be able to knit the colourwork faster than the rib even with the Norwegian purl.
I❤ mittens!
Another great info to improve my knitting and finishing. So much a A & C groupie!
😊
First off, your matchy matchy sweaters are beautiful and I wish there were patterns available for them. Secondly, I can really see the difference with the steaming. Wow. I have always wet blocked, but I think I am now a convert to steaming! I will definitely be ordering your yarn in the near future. We are in the process of moving to a new community and I will wait until it can be shipped to the new address - I already have enough stash to pack!!! ❤️ from 🇨🇦
Since seeing you advocate iron-blocking years ago, I quit wet blocking. I much prefer your method. Beautiful mittens!
Thank you!
The yellow and black mittens are so beautiful! Love the color combination! ❤️
If I make a mistake in my knitting I call it a “design element” - makes it unique!
I’ve heard if there is a mistake in your project it means it was made with love. Those mittens are gorgeous particularly the black and gold . 💕🇨🇦
😊
Hi, great to see you both love the mittens.
I love the look of Norwegian mittens coming to a point at the middle. Beautiful designs and colors
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! Steaming is the best. I love the stories about mistakes and I have heard of it in many religions, takes the pressure off for people.
We are only human!
I love that back and gold combination. ❤️
Thank you for the good ideas, Arne and Carlos❤️❤️🤗🤗
So nice to see you today. Love your sweaters! ❤😘
The two of you always make me feel better about my knitting, how mistakes are okay to make and sometimes easily corrected. Thank you for another enjoyable video. It is always so great to see you both!
Thank you for watching!
Yes I knitted a traditional mitten .I got the pattern through Craftsy and the result is enormous!!! Cheers Alison
It is said that only God is perfect, we humans always make at least one mistake...Absolutely LOVE the sweaters you two are wearing! Hope you'll make a pattern!!!!!!!
Happy to hear having a mistake is totally okay. Love your mittens. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
👍🏻❤️
Yay fabulous to see you again guys. Hope your weekend has been good. 🧶🧶
It has! Thank you for watching🎉
Love those mittens xxx
Oh my it made the stitches look so smooth and together. I have not really ever done this (I have skipped) but I have a lovely wool shawl that I am going to steam and see how the wool reacts.
So nice to see you both! It's so amazing to see how the steaming really makes the stitches pop! Thanks for sharing your skills with us!
Ingen årsak
You are welcome!
I look forward to your podcasts every week! Thank you
Thank you for watching Deborah
The mittens are absolutely beautiful. I love the designs very much.
Thank you!
It's so beautiful after the steaming. Thanks so much for sharing :)
Really like the colors
I really like the pattern and mitts .Love the tip about how to correct !
There's not one episode where I don't come away with something. I didn't know that such fine needles were once used in Norway, which meant that a lot of time and patience went into hand spinning the wool to produce fine wool. Again, I so admire the hard-working hands to produce such quality work. The families were once large, as well, and so these hands were not idle.
Hands that continue to be busy - always! - in the Arne and Carlos household as old lovely patterns are being brought to life in a larger gauge.
I also love the concept of humility, of leaving a mistake in your work on purpose to show humility. I believe the Amish in the US practise this in their quilting and leave a mistake on purpose to show their belief that only God is perfect. This is a concept that maybe should be embraced once again as too often we are caught up in producing that perfect stitch, achieving that perfect tension.
True, knitting should be a relaxing activiy
I love the black and gold color combintion! I also love the shape of the mittens and the pattern designs on them! I am going to buy the pattern and the black and gold yarn right now! Oh boy! Thank you, you guys!
❤️
Those “old things” are wonderful!
Great video. I have wet blocked a couple of times but seeing you steaming (without ruining) the mitten has given me the courage to try it. Thank you.
Yay
Beautiful mittens!❤️
I knit mitts with 000 vintage steel dpns in fine yarn.I do the bands plus about 3" of ribbing so they are about halfway to the elbow. That way you don't have the big mitt/sleeve gap when you are doing stuff outside. They are almost like a thick felt fabric and really warm in an angora blend. That black and mustard is lovely!🇨🇦👍😁♥️
Thank you Clone!
Looking great!
Beautiful mittens!
Love Arnes jumper. And I will give this a try, so Tusen Takk!
You are welcome!
I love the black and yellow combination. So, yet another project to queue up. Wonderful work.
Thank you!
I really love that old/new pattern. I’m in need of some new mittens and as I have some of your new yarn I might just start a pair today. It has been very cold here in WI.
😊👍🏻
You guys are so much fun. Great tips. I love the leave a mistake idea.
👍🏻
I am knitting a colorwork sweater with your Rowan Selects yarn, and it is wonderful to work with--"springy" is the right word!
Very nice mittens, well steamed !!!
❤️
Yay fabulous guys. Love the mittens. Hope your weekend has been good. 🧶🧶
It has been great, thank you for asking, we have recorded new content for you guys!
Thank you for another fun and informative video. I always look forward to your Sunday videos, and am looking forward to the return of Sit & Knit.
I love the black/gold gloves. Omg, the last gloves I knitted, was at school, long time ago. 😂😂 Because gloves, scalfs and hats are not in my clothing. This pieces are too warm for me. I leave the house, 5 minutes later I put them off and have the problem to carry them on my walk. 🤣🤣 I think, to iron this with steam, makes them tight and more warm. And Arne, nobody will discover the little fault. But will love this pair of gloves. I would!! 😉👍
Take care, all. 👍☕
Thank you Willow, is it very warm where you live?
Another wonderful tutorial . I'm learning so much from you . You make it so enjoyable . Thank you both .
😊
Your yarn is beautiful to work with. I am so happy with your yarn I got.
Thank you!
Very beautiful mittens ❤️
Thank you!
Brilliant, they are really lovely. It's great to see what you're doing and to get inspiration for doing our own things. Thank you so much 💕
You are welcome!
Thank you for all the tips, beautiful mitts and the sweaters you're wearing are gorgeous 😊.
Thank you so much Arlette!
I use a mitten blocker sometimes. I love the mittens! Time to do some shopping. Hugs!
Happy shopping!
When I was young I always steamed my knitting. I forgot all about it. Thank you for telling us about duplicate stitch.
You are welcome
Thanks for the Arne and Carlos “fix”! I know I am not perfect! 😅 Love that concept!! ❤️❤️
😊🤣
Great video. I don't intentionally make mistakes in my quilting or knitting....but there always seem to be one. LOL. Now I have a reason to justify them. LOL.....Thanks!
I love your cardigan and jumper 💕
Really enjoyed thank you! Mittens are gorgeous! Loved information about making a mistake ! Love all these little bits of know knowledge you both impart! Hugs & xx 💜🙏💜
Thank you for the tip on finishing touch.
You are welcome!
Hope you are enjoying the winter and the Olympics. We will be watching the Norwegian skiiers!
These are so beautiful! It’s so wonderful to see these gorgeous patterns. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for watching Carolyn
These are so beautiful! 🙂
Thank you!
Awesomeness 🌸
I've never heard of making deliberate mistakes in knitting before but I heard that perfect embroidery or cross stitch work is unlucky so people used to sew one stitch incorrectly to avoid bad luck. Love the mitten. I think I need to steam my mini Nordic sweaters!
Happy steaming
I would love to knit a pair of mittens on 1.5 mm. The original pattern must be amazing. Thank you for such great videos.
You are welcome Elizabeth!
For the intentional mistake you can also research: Persian flaw. Love you both and great video as always! Such beautiful mittens! I ordered the pattern for the Tiger ones. Thank you for everything that you share with us! Love from Canada.
Thank you Ann!
Gorgeous Mittens! I usually steam mittens and cowls.
Great!
Perfect timing, I need to make some stranded colorwork mittens for warmth. We just had a very cold week here in Denver, Colorado, and my hands aren't warm enough in my regular gloves for walking my dogs in the morning! I am currently making Selbu-patterned socks in blue and white, but I think I'll also cast on some Selbu -pattern mittens.
You will be matching!
hi guys good to see you my the mitts are beautiful i just love your little ironing board it is great i steam a lot of things because it is so easy to burn things well thanks for the podcast today will be watching for your decesion on sit and knit ok take care
We will announce something soon!
I knew Abt what to do Abt mistakes, I learn something new abt making a mistake in the work. I researched it, it was interesting, an the reason behind it. TY
Your twin sweaters are so cool 😊
Thank you!
Wild music! Fun!
I didn't know the custom to make a mistake in knitting or crochet. Great seeing u both. I'm working on a mistletoe wreath. The ring will be in a wood effect & bunches of sprigs of crochet mistletoe woven around the ring. It's a new wreath I'm designing. See u both nxt wk. 🧤🧤👌👌😎😎
See you seen!
I, a little OCD kind of person, would freak out in that Palace 🫣😂😂😂
Beautiful mittens! I also leave a mistake as a kind of signature 😊 The mistake may not be made on purpose, but if I leave it it makes the time more individual. Great tip for the duplicate stitch for if/when I make more than one mistake lol! Tak, be well, Sally 🌹
Hi Arne and Carlos, the Navajo purposely make a deliberate mistake in weaving blankets-- a reminder that humans make mistakes. Thanks for another enjoyable and informative episode.
I love seeing you in your sweaters. Sweaters make winter a season I can cope with instead of dread! I love that hack. Generally I will stop and examine my work for mistakes so that unraveling is not so bad. I tend to be a perfectionist and mistakes are devastating to me. Just one more quirk I have from my mom! I too have heard about the tradition of mistakes on purpose. I agreed with the person who made the comment that the Amish believe in that. I might add the old sect called the Shakers did too. I find it hard to make an intentional mistake 😂 ! I like perfection when it comes to my handiwork! I love mittens over gloves. Some people associate them with children and gloves for adults. I guess I will always be a child in my old age too! One year I bought some beautiful mittens from a Vermont crafter. The mittens were made from old woolen sweaters and repurposed. Remember the famous Bernie Sanders picture? The crafter hasn't come back to our craft show since so I am glad I bought so many. I hate making choices! She told me that she found it hard to find the old woolen sweaters and that was the downfall of making them.
That is such a nice idea, a shame that she didn’t find enough sweaters
@@ARNECARLOS Yes, people shy away from wool and favor either synthetic or blends for various reasons. The sweaters have to be 100% wool. I bought so many under the guise that I could give them as gifts. I guess you might say I did. I gifted them all to me so far 😆 !
I never have to worry about not having a mistake!😜
😂
Based on a past video of yours on using the duplicate stitch to correct a colorwork boo boo. I used it and..yep..nobody will ever know but me. Thank you so much.if ☆☆☆
You are welcome Connie!
Hi Arne&Carlos, I'm from Romania, and we have the same, we put mistakes protecting us from harm .We have these traditions when we embroider our traditional romanian blouse.
❤️
Hi guys I like the stream blocking better then the wet pin method.
Love love love watching your videos though, in all honesty, I can't wear much of the things you knit in Alabama! I however am of Norwegian descent and really liked the episode where you had a book of farms in Norway. My family's farm was Paalshaugen and the person who immigrated to the US was Hans Olsen Paalshaugen though once he arrived in Minnesota, he changed his name to Hans Martin Opsett. The cabin in Noway is now used as a hunting cabin. Hope someday to visit Norway and explore some but in the meantime will keep watching your videos.
Hi! We hope you make it over to Norway one day! We have just recorded a tutorial on how we do our ancestry research and what resources are available, maybe you can find more relatives!
@@ARNECARLOS l have one line back to 1580. Would like to watch your video
Great tip about NOT streaming the ribbing parts. Also, it seems we knitters have always had a way to justify mistakes🤭. Greetings from Argentina!
❤️👍🏻
Thank you for the great video! It was very interesting to see how you adapted the pattern, and to learn a bit about the background of Norwegian mittens. I also never realised that you could wear woolen mittens over leather gloves, which is is great news to me as I love such mittens but can't wear wool directly on my skin. I'm going to make myself a pair that fit on top my leather gloves, for when it's really cold outside.
You are welcome!
The Selbu style mittens are beautiful perhaps as an artistic piece, but too warm to wear here in the Mid Atlantic. I hope to try them someday.
So do we!
👍😁🥰Thank you!
Whoops I pressed send in error when correcting. Should be miss you on a Wednesday evening, so will look forward to watching you when you are set up and ready. However enjoyed tonight as always thank you.
Also I really like your method of steaming... I never liked putting pins into a wet garment, that's a good method of ruining pins!
❤️
