I knit my first pair of Norwegian mittens last winter and still have the thumbs to finish, thank you so much for this inspiration to pick up my dpn’s as soon as the cooler weather sets in! Terri from Shetland Wool Week shared with me that the smaller patterns on the palm side are used to make them “more” long wearing.

Thank you very much for your tutorial ! I have started knitting a mitten out of the book Knit like a Latvian, and the thumb directions are the same, except, by reading the directions, I wasn't getting the understanding of how to work the thumb part. My directions do say to put a certain number of stitches on waste yarn and then move them back onto the needle. which is different than this tutorial, but I can use this example for sure.

HI Robin, I have a video specifically for the Latvian thumb. Look here: ruclips.net/video/3mSVfih1t48/видео.html
You'll understand the thumb better with this "Afterthought Thumb" video. I hope you see this so you don't go down the wrong road with my Norwegian Thumb video. :)

Ah ha, long tail for picking up to continue knitting the palm. Good idea. My first pair of Selbu mittens I used a backward loop and cast-on in pattern which produced annoying floats to contend with when time to pick up stitches for the thumb. So for my next several mittens, I like you, just used the background color to do the cast-on stitches and continue the palm. However I knit through the back of a crochet chain so that I would have live stitches to use later. Only a minute or two more but better than backward loop with floats from working in pattern. I'll try your long tail method next time. 👍🏼

Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to teach those of us who want to learn.
In some Selbuvotter patterns, the knitter is instructed to cast-on in pattern, with both colours, when bridging the gap over the hole created by setting aside the thumb gusset stitches. How is that done?? I noticed in the tutorial that you only used the background colour when casting-on those stitches that bridge the gap. How visible will those newly cast-on stitches be, and will a single colour cast-on affect the seamless transition between the pattern on the back of the thumb, and the pattern on the palm? Cheers.

The base of there thumb looks neater when casting on background sts over the thumb hole gap. But you can change the colors: *after casting on a st, bring the far yarn forward over the near yarn (and the near yarn under and to the back of the other yarn) , then cast on 1 more stitch. Repeat from *.

Hi Beth! Do you have a link to your Selbu mitten pattern that you show in this video? I looked on your website and it's not one of the ones that are listed there. Love your pattern!
