I'd love one of these. Especially since I live in a town with a pool older than my 53 year old dad, that is always closed even before these times. Not to mention I live in Canada where it's cold 8 months of the year.
Well done on the DIY job. I've got an Endless Pool E500, outside with the cantilever doors, it's great to start with, but I have decided, over the nearly 4 years I've had, that I'd wished I hadn't! It was an enormous start up cost. it's a lot of fuss to fully clean when leaves & dirt get in as my doors sometimes blow open (west of Ireland fun), the doors are wearing badly in the weather, but the worst of course is running costs. It's always been awful, as you can crank her up to 40 degrees, but with energy prices starting to run away, I just don't feel like running it anymore, maybe solar might be the answer, but that's not cheap to install, so who knows!!!!!! ;-(.
Yes I'm in the same boat to an extent. I normally run mine pretty cool so the heating cost isn't too bad but when it's frosty and the pool is 12 degrees I really don't want to do much in there and I found myself going back to the gym for big swims. I have just swapped onto an electric car tariff and electricity is pretty cheap overnight (6p/kw) so I could set the heating on a timer and run it a lot cheaper...
@@tomchapman5761 Hey Tom, glad to hear you're suffering too ;-). I do have a day/ night tariff here, so the only trick I can do is heat it at night & turn it off in the day, until someone wants to use it; your 6p is very good, I think my night is 9-10cents. I've asked my pool supplier here if they've had any experience with solar, but I'm not even sure I want to pay for it at the mo. I've decided in the last few years, that my biggest luxury, if I won the lottery, would be to leave all my lights on around the house without worrying about the bill, so I guess the pool is in that too!! Good luck with it mate.
Considering getting one in Ireland too... Nice to hear a real life experience like this. Probably impractical given energy costs now and how cold Ireland gets.
@@Chillmax I dont know what kind of yard/roof restrictions you have, but have you ever looked at a solar water heater? I have seen a couple DIY projects using a wooden box and the yellowish pvc i think its cpvc but I don't remember off the top of my head... paint the inside of the box black and put a greenhouse type plastic over it and they increase the water temps a good amount.
@@lancelowrey8615 Hey Lance, no restrictions at all, I'm way out in the Irish countryside on 11 totally secluded acres ;-). I'm really cross with myself, when I moved here 4 years ago, that I didn't look into solar more, but because I'm in Ireland, I didn't think it was worth it. However I've since learned that solar is better than I thought nowadays with lower light levels. My roof also is quite complex, so I could have them follow the sun throughout the day!! I blew my budget on the install & massive house refurb at the same time, so can't do much at the moment, but thanks for the ideas, when finances allow, I'll try & look into it all. Ireland are pretty good with green grants, so maybe I could get some free money too ;-). Cheers JJ

Great video Tom, good luck with your channel swim! I installed an ex-demo endless pool 7 years ago and it’s been a wonderful fitness investment. The only thing I would change about my pool is the roof - mine is in a barn and I’d love a retractable roof to let the sunshine in and the humidity out when the weather’s good. The other thing you might want to consider us a dehumidifier on a timer to stop those swim caps getting mouldy...mine comes on at midnight with the economy 7! Also do you have mirrors in the bottom? Looking forward to seeing your drill videos!

Hey Tom, Great Video. I did a test swim yesterday in one of those modular endless pools with a special type of recirculation. Great swimming but way too expensive. So I'm thinking about a similar solution like yours. Do you feel any kind of cross-or countercurrent when you swim because of water "bouncing" or "floating"back from the the back wall of your pool? Thx for your answer and kind regards
The 'proper' endless has those channels down the side the water comes back through. Mine like you say it bounces off the back wall and comes back down the side so the flume is a bit narrower and you notice your legs getting pushed round if you aren't straight...but that's no bad thing, it forces you to swim nice and tight and straight and not switch off! It's something you get used to too I think!
I only ever run the heating in the winter so it's not very effective. I had an air source heat pump to start with which is supposed to be super efficient...but because I only ever ran it in the winter I never got the most out of it so swapped to electrical resistance!
This is brilliant! I understood very little of what you said because it was all in UK and I'm in the USA, but I love that you did this. We are all missing swimming right now.
Did you insulate the shed and the roof? Also what about the pool... like using Rock-wool board which is made for exterior use.. can take water so would have been fine inside. Did you insulate the concrete pad? Ie with perlite bags underneath and vapor barrier etc? I know these add cost but save on monthly utilities. I mean you are keeping it pretty cold.. but most people are going to want 87-93 F. Maybe a little lower for hard swimming.
The shed isn't insulated, the pool is wrapped in celotex boards and a space blanket. There's 100mm polystyrene on top when it's not being used. The pool has about 2" of insulation boards they use for the floor!
Ah, one day all this will be mine...once I've cleaned out the garage, and got the finance in place.... Do you ever swim breaststroke in the pool, that's my preferred stroke but in most videos people do front crawl...what is breaststroke like with the EP jet? Thanks.

maybe a little off the wall but - has anyone considered heating one of these off the back of a wood-burning stove ? maybe linked to an underfloor heating loop - I live in the UK and am more likely to have access to cheap wood than cheap electricity ! Maybe I could go solar in summer and wood in winter....
Why didn’y you just make the shed taller? And added a 3’ deep foyer on the entrance. You were already spending the money! That was just bad design on your part haha besodes that, looks awesome
Building regulations in the UK say the max height of a shed is 2.5m before you need to go through the full process of getting planning permission! Mine is 2.47m ;). I could have put a porch on it yeah I'll take that one!!

Dude why are you paying for heat?, you've got all that roof for a hillbilly pool heater. Black pvc pipe with a bit of perspex over it. You would be amazed
I got my pool second hand off ebay! New they are like £7000 for the pool and £7000 for the endless pool motor. If you google endless pools, you might have a local supplier!
get a heat pump you'll be sorted .. i read at least 1kwh per rise of 1 degree celcius per meter squared water.. work that out and you gonna be skint very soon. 1kwh is about 14p unless you use economy 7 at night
There's 11m2 of water in that pool! I started out with a 1.5kw electrical, 7.5kw heat, air source heat pump. So for every 1.5kw of electrical power, I should have got 7.5 heat. Problem was I only run the heating in the winter...and as the temperature of the air drops, the efficiency drops as there is no heat in the air for it to take and put in the water. Most heat pumps rate there efficiency at 25 degree air temp so they are great in the summee. At 5degree air, the only time I was running my heating...they really don't work very well at all!
Loving your work fella. Is your swim still on for this year? I rescheduled mine for 2022. Was making do with an above ground and ratchet strap. Wasn't quite cutting it!!!!
Ah my solo was last year so yeah I was quite lucky! Supposed to be on a relay in June this year, fingers crossed it will get away shortly! Good luck with yours, I'd hate to have this disruption in a solo, probably a good choice to delay!

Interesting. I built my EP kit (above ground) in 2004. Still going strong. However, two years ago I hired a pool builder to build a concrete inground pool with exact dimensions as the above ground shell. It looks beautiful now with blue tiles and a black tiled centre line! Just like the real thing.

How Much is Endlesspool motor? You did not mention this in your costs. I found the cheapest for 7999 pounds online.

Hi Tom why didnt you dig the pool half way in to the ground? It could gif you some more space above the head.
I did think about it but I figured it was a lot of extra effort and expense and I was worried it might fill up with water!

What type of wood did you use zise and thickness and how you did you join them together
The pool is made by a company but I think it's treated redwood. It's probably about 40mm thick. All the joints are precut so it just stacks together
Why is it so wide and why not sink it in the ground so the cabin can be Multi use.
You say 3kWh costs 50-60p. That sounds like you're heating water with an electric heater. Why don't you use a gas boiler to heat up the water?

I got nervous when you touched the led light strip near water.
Ha ha they're USB so only a couple of volts....but the ones I bought are actually totally sealed so they're watertight!
