I love hitting 3 wood off the tee. It's so much easier to control, and I don't lose much distance compared to my driver. I can outdrive most of my buddies going against their drivers. It really iritates them. 😁 Great information as always!
Awesome! Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Me too! The look on their faces when you out drive them with the 3 wood! 😂
can't stop watching this video! so happy to finally get excellent instruction on teeing off with the 3-wood! thanks again!
Glad to help! Keep up the good work.
wow. That throwing explanation is an easy way to help the feel. Coming from someone who played cricket for 15 years i have the same issue with long irons and 3W with early extension. Cheers Clay
I love hitting 3-woods off the deck, ow with this fine tuning tip from Clay I can hit it some amazing distances now. Super.
Good stuff!
Yet again, thank you Clay.
3 wood, teed down, slightly downward hit = magic ! Consistant long drives only 4 or 5 metres less than the driver.
Cheers,. Dennis Evans. Australia.
Excellent. Keep up the good work!
I love my 3 wood. It’s my go to off the tee club. Yes event more so than driver. Not for distance even though I routinely get it out to 230-240. It’s accuracy and consistency that I love.
Awesome! Thanks for watching 👍
I’m in Seattle so I hardly watch golf tips this time of year. This one was worth a watch. Suggest some slo-mo shots would help too.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback.
This helped a lot. Over the summer I got into golf after not playing for about 6 years. My first couple of rounds I played this summer couldn’t hit my driver straight to save my life and it was really pissing me off. I learned how to properly tee off with the 3 wood and it is way better. We have this 9 hole course par is I think 38. I would shoot like a 10 over by teeing off with my driver and with the 3 wood best I was able to do was a 4 over which for me isn’t bad.
That's great! Keep up the good work 👍
Great tip! The throwing analogy really tuned the light bulb on. Can't wait to work on this.
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck!
Very good! I hit the subscribe button right away.
In the 80's i got a video of my swing and was amazed at how early i was getting the straight line release. About half way down from the top. left arm parallel with the ground. Interestingly, at a pga tour stop Johnny Miller was giving a swing tutorial and I asked him where was the proper time to release the club. He told me you can not release too early. You should be releasing right from the top. It didn't make sense to me especially when I was clearly releasing way, way before a tour player was releasing. I've heard other people say that too and I just don't get what they are talking about. Clay makes sense to me.
I swing with a 3 wood off the tee the exact same as my driver, but it goes further and straighter. I’ve also started hitting irons like that too. 7 iron like a driver for me goes around 160 instead of 150. It’s pretty fun.
Thanks clay. I've started playing again (well currently training and loving it) after a 17 year lay off! Im hitting the balls better and further then in ever have through watching videos like yours and some others thank you. Only done iron work so far but lookingto get the rescue clubs and 3 wood out. This was exactly what I needed 👌👍⛳
Good stuff. Keep up the good work!
As a natural right hander that plays lefty..Ive been working hard on my left arm to throw the club rather than pulling with my dominate right. I now have a neutral grip and hitting straight...prior I needed a strong grip to stop fade/slice.
I have also played a few rounds using only the 3W instead of driver for both tee and fairway...works a treat but can be a bit too high against the wind..
Glad you were able to straighten it out. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
I have the same problem in reverse. I struggle off the tee with driver immensely with fade/slice. Using 3w has helped me too. Im a natural lefty that golfs righty. What did you to fix the issues with your dominant hand pulling through on the downswing? I reshafted my 3w to x-stiff, that seems to have helped me a lot. Thinking of doing same with driver. Any tips are appreciated.
Never seen this covered before on YT & it caught my interest because I don't feel comfortable hitting a three wood off a tee. First thing that caught my attention was tee height. I tee it higher & that often results in a ball that goes way up but not as far as I want it to go. Seems more similar to hitting a three wood as a fairway wood than hitting it like a driver where i do tee the ball above the crown.
You got it! Best of luck!
Thanks so much Clay. So glad I found your channel.
My pleasure! Hope you're playing well ⛳
Quality as always. For some reason, started struggling with the 3 wood. Will try these... thanks Clay
Thanks! Best of luck!
Great video Clay love ripping my 3 wood 👍my G410 goes a Mile when I catch it, best 3 wood I've ever owned 😀👍
Nice 👍
Best video on a 3wood I have seen. Many thanks.
Wow, thanks! 😀
i watched this video and almost instantly started hitting the ball about 40 yards further along with a lot straighter. I use a 5 wood tho since i got to get a new 3 wood. my distance went from 150 to anywhere betweem 160 to 200 yards. This has helped me a lot. Thanks.
Thanks. Just what I needed
My pleasure!
Yeah, that damn golf ball is just in the way !!!
Mega Wow ! An eye opener !
Unbelievable. Went and hit my epic speed 3 wood of a tee following your technique. What an eye opener! Not sure the last ball wasnt't longer than the driver!!
Awesome!
Hi Clay. Enjoy your videos. I purchased a new 3 wood 5 yrs ago and was killing it for about six months. Out of nowhere, I just lost it. Couldn't hit worth a lick. Took out of my bag and bought a 2 iron. Do you have a video on how to hit a 3 wood consistently from the fairway ?

@@TopSpeedGolf Thank you for responding. I will study the video.
@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks. Great video. At 74, I can't get really good rotation but I have been working on hitting down on the ball since last year. Work in progress. Should I use the same method for my hybrids ? Thank you
Thanks Clay, great explanation as always 👍
I have stopped using a driver and switched to a three wood a month ago. Hitting 10 out of 14 fairways instead of 7 out of 14. And I’m only giving up 10 yds if that.
Glad to hear that's working for you. Best of luck!
gotta learn better this dag-gon' straight-line release technique. thanks clay!
Happy to help!
Thank you so much for this video, Clay! Remember me requesting instruction on teeing off with a 3-wood two years ago? ;-) [I do not have a driver]
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the request!😀
@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks ever so much. If you could tell me some more about set-up, ball position et cetera, I would be most grateful.
Kind golf greetings from COVID-19 locked-down Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The ball position should be in somewhere in the neighborhood of the middle of the stance on full swings. You would only move the ball position up to the shoulder area to catch it on the upswing with your driver. Here is a video on set up that you might find helpful: ruclips.net/video/HtCYle4oQkA/видео.html Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Wow 💖 this looks amazing 👌😀👍
Thanks!
What state do you do your videos from? Everything is always so green.
Florida. Play well!
Does that also works for teeing off with a 5 wood ?
Can you use the straight line release when using hybrids.
Great video and content, is the straight arm release slightly left of your target line or does it depend which shape you are hitting?
The Straight-Line Release is when the club shaft splits the forearms and will be slightly left of your target if it's happening around 45 degrees past impact. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
I have been working on my 3 wood Clay & hit it fairly consistently off the deck. My main trouble is getting height. Should I be hitting down on it off the deck?
I'd hit down on every club except my driver. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Perfect thanks!
You're welcome! My pleasure.
Therefore, keep the tee as low as for iron tee shot?
I’ve been playing for about 8 years and I still prefer my 3 wood to my driver.
Great video. Do you also recommend the same downward motion for hybrids? Hitting down on the ball. I continue to hear to sweep the ball almost on the upswing with a hybrid. So confusing. Thanks!
I would hit down on all of my clubs except my driver. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks Nate!
My pleasure!
Thank you!
I keep hitting the ground about 3/4 inches before the contact. What am I doing wrong
Probably swaying backwards in your backswing. And then never getting to the front foot at contact
Have any tips for someone that often snap hooks 3wood off the tee. Only club it happens with
Great video. Good content.👍🏌⛳🇺🇸😀
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I hit my 3 wood off the tee every time I hit it 30 yards further than my driver and I hit my 3 wood so much more consistently
Ive seen tutorial videos for 3 wood off the tee, suggesting to tee the ball up so just over half the face is above the crown, and have the ball aligned to the heel of the front foot, so we one can hit it on the up. Youre saying the complete opposite.
Both ways work. Teeing it up like you describe gives you a higher launch and more distance, akin to a driver swing. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Love your coaching but I can’t agree with you on this one. Most amateurs would find it easier to hit consistently, and get distance, from a teed up 3 Wood (eg half a ball above the club) not striking down on the ball. Fairway woods are one of the most inconsistent clubs for amateurs off the deck and I just can’t see the point of taking the advantage of a tee away.
Thanks for sharing!
Hmmm? It sounds like good sense, but if you slow the video down, your own arm doesn't do what you say, 4:25 speed 0.25
I see forward shaft lean when I slow it down just like Clay is instructing. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
