Longshot (a.k.a. Loudshot) is king in 357 Sig, 40SW and 10mm. My 2nd favorite is Blue Dot. Max charge of Longshot behind a 124 fmj, clocked 1448 fps from my P229. From my understanding Speer switched from plated primers to non plated to increase sensitivity. I bet your decapping mandrel came loose by design, not because it wasn't tight. You hit a piece of brass with the S on the head stamp indicating a small flash hole. I decap all my brass first with the Lee Universal Decapper. Its pin is tapered so easily opens up any under sized flash hole. Thumbs up for demonstrating when you show restraint if flaring, you just need to lightly hit it with the crimp die to restore the case mouth. The cartridge shouldn't require a crimp to hold the bullet.
Great to know! I also have the universal decapper, but rarely use it for pistols. I try to not over expand the case mouths, to help prevent any extra wear. Same with the crimp, neck tension is holding the projectile, so the crimp is mainly just closing up the expanded neck 👍👊🇺🇸 Thanks for watching and the informative comment!
Outstanding video! I started reloading in 1980. I have the rock chucker. I am now trying out reloads for my P229 in 40/357 Sig. I am watching video to relearn and build up my confidince. Thank you for the lesson. My last reloads were 44 Mag Bear Loads in 2018 and my friend in Montana ordered another 100 rounds. I just purchased some Longshot for my P 229 and will start off with 40 S & W before trying the 357 Sig. Thanks!
P229 .357 is exactly what I want to reload for. Never reloaded ever, but the market price of .357 sig, makes me think this is a good idea. I love underwood for self-defense rounds, but not for the range, think reloads would be better. How did it go with your P229 reloads?
Didn't have any issues at all! The sizing die just uses the standard pistol decapping rod, so there's no weird expanding mandrel or anything to catch on the necks. Seating was cake once we had our cases properly expanded. Thanks for watching and commenting 👊👍🇺🇸
Heck! You made that look easy. You took all "The Scary" out of .357 Sig. That, believe it or not, would be a "Deer Legal" caliber in British Columbia as well as many other parts of Canada (Out of a rifle like my TNW Aero you saw a few days ago). Nicely presented! Mike
Thanks for watching! It's just like loading anything else, be careful and pay attention, and you'll be fine. I love hearing about the differences in our laws. What is the deciding factor they use to determine that? 👍👊
@@DummyRound I had thoughts of trying to do a series of short 60 seconds or less videos on Canadian Firearms, Archery, Hunting, Fishing Rules. Like once a week or something like that. I'd have to plan it in advance. As for Deer & .357 Sig, here's the short answer. In the Province of BC, where I am, Hunting Regulations divide lawful hunting methods into 4 main categories, Rimfire Rifles, Centerfire Rifles, Shotguns & Archery, I can use "Any Centerfire Rifle" on all big game with only 1 exception, "Bison" which are covered by other requirements. I can also legally hunt "Other Small Game" like, Rabbits, Raccoons, Skunks & Coyotes, Grouse & Ptarmigan, but not legal for Turkeys, Quail or Pheasants? Crazy Eh! Can we say ".17 Hornet vs Black Bear or Moose?
357SIG...WOW! I also use the Lee Ram Prime. For me, I found it works better than the Lee Safety Primer that is attached to the press. Good walk through of your reloading process. Thanks for sharing.
The Ram Prime was some of the best spent $10 on my bench. I haven't ever used a Lee press so I'm not familiar with the safety prime system. Thanks for watching 👊👍🇺🇸
Not trying to bash you, but I'm very experienced in bottleneck pistol rounds. Started with 400 Corbon, which is even harder to maintain neck tension. My question is did you do a seatback test using thumb pressure? I asked this because I've had round of .357 sig come out looking perfect with no flare involved at all that when minor pressure from thumb pushed the bullet in. The solution is to make sure to use a compressed load. Bluedot and 800X comes to mind, that if you lose neck tension the bullet is not allowed to setback. A full charge of Bluedot I have chambered a non primed case over 30 times with a measured no setback when done. The other option is a tight Lee FCD setting. (The collet style). They look good, but the only reason I mentioned it is for you and your friends safety. That load looked like it was fairly full (never used Longshot) so I am sure setback would be minimum if any. Just something to be aware of.
I appreciate the tip. As far as I know, he didn't experience any issues when firing them. I did not do a set back test but certainly will if I load any more of these in the future. I don't think I was at a max charge of Longshot but it did fill up the case pretty well. Good to know a compressed load can help prevent any set back if it were to happen. Thanks brother 👍👊🇺🇸
This was my thought exactly. I load 357sig alot and have had alot of issues with bullet set back which can be very dangerous as it ups the pressure. So please make sure to check for it. 😁
Beautifully reloaded .357 sig rounds, all carefully reloaded so that each one is the same as the one before it, if you look at the seating specs for the 9mm,357sig & the 40 s&w you see that they all have simular seating depths 1.100"- 1.400". Your display presentation was very organized colorful clearly consise , im sure your buddy will be quite pleased with your efforts , another great video my brother.👍
Thank you, sir! I appreciate it 👊 I knew 9mm had a similar OAL, but I've not looked at the specs for 40sw too closely. If it were my gun I'd be trying all kinds of cast loads for it as well, looks like a blast to shoot. If you want to shoot me an email dummyroundtn @ gmail I have a pile of 40sw and 10mm range brass collecting dust I wouldn't mind sending off. Idk anybody else that uses it and I'd rather it go to a good home than sit around here lol
I've never used Longshot... never was even curious enough to look into... maybe I should, since that's one of the powders that seems to be available, these days. Good job loading what's been labeled as a "finicky" cartridge 👍🇺🇸
Just take your time, be careful, make sure you're paying attention, and you'll be ok. If I can do it, anybody can 🤣 Longshot has been available quite a bit lately, both locally and online. I grabbed this bottle back in January, I think? We tried it in 9mm, but other than those 10 shots, I'm pretty inexperienced with it. Seems to meter well, and give great velocities for the applications I've looked at. It might be worth a try. A pound of pistol powder goes a long way so I'm sure you could find something to use it in. Thanks for watching, Jerry 🇺🇸👊👍
I know this is 2 years old, and also a great video, but watching your press wobble around has triggered my mechanical OCD ruined my morning. If someone shows up at your door holding an armload of assorted reinforcement material and a bag of fasteners, it's probably me. Just point to your loading bench and I'll fix it. :D
I enjoyed this video! I am reloading 357sig right now, well I should say deconstructing live water damaged rounds. I had the same issue with the decapping rod. It wanted to move all the time even with good pressure on the tightening bolt. Has to be a small flash hole?
So you crimp with your seating die? I have the Lee 4 die set so been doing it separately. Is it possible to seat and crimp at the same time? I've heard the combo seat/crimp dies are a pita to set up. I'm doing everything on a single stage so trying to cut time wherever possible
I have the seating die backed out, as to not engage the crimp in stage 3. Then the next stage has another die with the seating stem taken out, and lowered to use it's crimp feature. You can do it together, but I always do them separately when possible. Even if I have a combo die, I'll do them in two different steps on the single stage for rifles.
I've never asked anyone to do it without offering to pay. I actually can't fathom asking anyone (other than maybe family who already owes me money) to spend the time and effort without compensation.
1300 is good for defence with less blast flash and recoil, at 1300 that bullet will reliably expand even plugged with clothing.
Should get the job done👍🇺🇲

It's just a known issue with Lee dies. Some of them just don't seem to tighten until it's way overboard😬
I use a expander ball. Seems to keep neck tension more repeatable
During sizing or what? More repeatable than the normal mouth expanding step?
