They write all their own music. The award they are most proud of is their Songwriter Hall Of Fame Award!
Still trying to get Prince in Songwriter Hall of Fame!
Aw, shoulda done the official music video.
Agreed. I was so bummed out when I saw this was live. You should always do the original version before a live so you know what it's supposed to sound like.
Since music is written to be performed live, by real musicians, this is exactly how the song is supposed to sound like.
This is from Live Aid in Philadelphia. There were close to 90,000 ppl there.
The other side of the pond was at Wembley. There were over 70,000 ppl there.
1.5 billion ppl (including my friends and me) watched on TV over the world.
There were more than 75 bands combined. Each only had 20 minutes on stage. They made nearly 130 million for famine relief for Africa.
Queen brought in the most donations during their set which still ranks on most lists as the greatest concert. You need to check that out if you haven't already.
Phil Collins made history too. He played a set in both arenas - he finished one and flew to the other and played the too. What a time!!
did they solve the problem? where did all the $ go? (axein for Joe Mamma)
As many have said Hall and Oates were pretty much involved in the writing and producing of all of their songs. They collaborated often with Daryl's ex girlfriend Sara Allen and sometimes with Sara's sister Janna Allen also writing. They co-wrote with a few other people here and there throughout their career, but they were always involved and in charge.
Death, taxes and Britt consistently choosing the worst live performances of great classic songs to react to. Unless a specific great live performance of a song is requested you should ALWAYS react to studio/original music video version of a requested song, not some random live performance. Sure you might luck out with an actually decent random live performance every now and then but 95% of the time, they are often bad, or pale in comparison to the original and it ends being a missed opportunity for us to see you react to many of the signature classic songs of the past we look forward to seeing you react to. Major buzzkill.
If you have never seen a keyboard playing saxophonist, clearly you MUST watch Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group!!
Yep you need to see Edgar Winter group's Frankenstein, amazing and surprising.
I was just about to suggest this!!
Unless trivia. Edgar invented the Keytar because he wanted to be seen by the women in the crowd.
Watch the Midnight Special version instead of the Old Grey Whistle Test one. It's longer, but it's also better.
Anything by Edgar Winter Group is worth watching
I have seen other people react to the actual music video of this song...I agree with the other folks who say you should listen to the studio version. But you definitely need to check out She's Gone.
That's a lions mane girl not a mullet! They write all their songs with help from his girlfriend "SARAH" and her sister I believe. Most are all Daryl and John. This is why they're the best selling duo in history!!!!
Hall and Oates were the biggest band in the world during the 80's and they sold an believable amount of albums. More than any other contemporary band in the world for decades. Hall has videos with other musicians at his home studio that you can watch and it is actually very amazing!!!
Philadelphia is where Daryl is from and John is also from Pennsylvania.
Britt, if this is an aid concert it was probably at JFK stadium which held over 100,000 capacity. Venue has since been demolished.
Yes, Hall and Oates wrote their songs.
i would love to see you melt again like u did with sara smile. watch the 2 songs from them called one on one. and she's gone. trust me you will melt again.
Live at the Apollo is phenomenal.
The participation of Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin of the Temptations is magical.
The 90s solo years were a great vintage : I'm in a Philly mood, Stop loving me, stop loving you for example (and cool haircuts 😄).
Now that's a classic song and to this very day your the only one I've heard play it i only know that song because my mom used to play it day and night lol keep up the outstanding work darlin 👍
Check out the music video of "Private eyes" by Hall and Oates. Pretty cool.
Stop watching these videos on live shows cause the sound is nothing like to original songs.
Screw that. They sound great live
Live is ALWAYS better. Always.
Suprised you haven't heard this one Britt. You should definitely listen to the studio version too. Love the hairstyle btw :)
Yeah, definitely like the hair. 😢 10:02
Studio version is much better.
Hall & Oats are the #1 all time duo when it comes to hits.
The sax player is Charlie “Mr. Casual” DeChant! Joined Hall & Oates in 1976 and is still with the Daryl’s House band today. ❤
You should watch some episodes of Daryl’s Place. I’m 9:28 sure there are some on the net. He has a studio at his home and invites other artists to come play with him. They will sing each other’s songs. It’s very cool.
Hall and Oates never get old to me since I started listening to them back in 1980.
Just discovered your channel today, and I've been binging your reactions to Hall and Oats, it's been quite fun seeing you as a young person enjoy a artist that by my own personal standard is brilliant and yet I have to be reminded of that, I tend to keep moving forward musically as I don't necessarily go out of my way to hear older music from my life that's been beaten into my ears for over half a century, this however does not discount any music from the era, it's my issue, having said this it's been a lot of fun watching your video reactions today, keep up with your great work, and this group was incredible, and Darryl is an amazing musician, I would suggest checking out live from Daryl's some time.
Hopefully you read the comments. When you said that they surely don’t write and sing all these chart toppers and that ‘nobody does that’ I thought I would let you in on a little info. The Bee Gees had six number on songs in a row. They write all their own music. Just an add bonus for trivia purposes, they also had 5 songs in the top ten all at the same time. I just had to add that in so you know it can be done. By the way, you would be so fun to hang out and go to the disco with and hang out. I was jr high and starting high school so nothing crazy but it was so fun. Keep reacting and give those Bee Gees another listen. AMAZING 😊
Hall And Oates
Rich Girl
The first time I heard this song was in I believe 1982 after graduating Navy Boot Camp in San Diego. There was a local establishment by the name of "The Body Shop." Obviously it was a strip club. A women that made all the young men tingle dressed in leopard pattern would perform to this song. Fond memories. That's my "Man Eater" story, and I'm sticking with it!!
Check out Live From Daryl's House... numerous guest you'll love... check out "Fall In Philadelphia" with guest Diane Birch.
Hall and Oates are both from Philly area so they're playing to their home town crowd in this vid.
Love this! You *must* also react to Mr. Mister, another 80s band. "Kyrie Eleison" and "Broken Wings" are the hits they are/were known for. Richard Page's vocals are AMAZING.
This song sounds much better recorded than live in my opinion
First she reacted to "Colonol Angus" and now "Maneater", I sense a theme here.
Yeah, PLEASE, listen to the studio cut. That intro is too saucy to be missed for a live performance.
In my opinion, it is best to watch the original video with the studio version of a song first before watching a live version, so that you know what the song is supposed to sound like. This doesn't really sound like the original version, which is superb. Live is secondary. (IMO)
They both went to temple where they met. One is from the Philly area.
I'm 55.. When I was in the 8th grade my math teacher (Mr Prible) kept at chart of the top 10 billboard songs and kept it updated... Hall and Oates were always all over it.. hello Prible 👋😁
I guess live performances get less strikes but this one is vocally really not the best when compared to the studio. Anyway, stick Sade on the list for live performances since I'm here commenting and I've just been watching her before this. She and her band will blow you away. EDIT: Quick whinge... I actually just watched the Your Love is King 2011 performance and am now bemoaning the fact that many women these days seem to have completely forgotten how to be classy, sultry and sexy. What's the male equivalent of the PDC?
I'm so glad you followed up on your commitment to Hall and Oates. love your reactions.
I think it would have been better to do the studio version of this song.
Please listen to the original studio version, WAY better than this.
was 12 when this came out - I remember my Dad asking me what my younger brother and I thought this song was about as it was playing in the Pizza Hut (back when you used to eat inside a Pizza Hut) -
I'm pretty sure our reply had something to do with like a black panther stalking around the forest or something.
This is from LIVE AID in 1985, held in London and Philly, hence the large stage and attendance.
the song was actually a John Oates idea at first. He met a model with a dirty mouth cussing all over the place, and he thought "Oh she will chew you up". He presented the song to Daryl as a reggae song, and Daryl turned it into the song we all know. Later they both said the song was actually more about NYC at the time than an actual woman, but of course the impetus for the song was in fact, a maneating woman.
I love this song! but „I can’t go for that“ will always be my favorite!
Thanks for reacting to a H&O song that is seldom be reacted! No choice but to subscribe 🥳❤️
You would look great in that long hair Hall is rocking out!❤
Oh thank you!
Hall wrote the songs and he hates Oates at this point. I believe they are suing one another...
One of the greatest bands ever
Philly is home for them.
Love this song. Listen to studio on your own.
Checkout their cover of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". John Oates is actually singing a duet with Daryl. John is also the lead singer on minor hits "Your Imagination" & "Possession Obsession"
Farm Aid is not Live Aid. This was Live Aid.
Hall & Oates performing at Live Aid in front of 100,000 people in the John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia USA on the 13th July, 1985.
What a shitty version of this song. You should react to the studio version or official video because this doesn't give this song any justice
Have you watched any Daryl's House videos where Daryl Hall hosts various great artists for a jam session in his home?
This song and family man were always my favorites...
Great performers…
You should watch Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell sisters All three sisters play several instruments in a song
You should check out Daryl's House here on youtube. He gets together with others artists and they sing classic iconic songs in his studio.
Yep they wrote all there song Sara Allen Daryl ex helped write on some too
Love your channel! Always watch every episode.
I can't for the life of me understand why you don't pull-up the lyrics as you do these songs.
Thx
I think John Oats wrote this song... For the most point I think they wrote their hits.
John Oates was having dinner with some friends when a very attractive woman joined the group. She proceeded to talk like a man would. After dinner, the line “oh here she comes “ kept running through his head. He went home and wrote “Maneater”. He wrote it in a Caribbean style. Daryl heard John’s song and suggested it should sound more R&B. “Maneater” became the group’s biggest hit.
Written by him, Sara Allen and Daryl Hall.
I guess doing live is your thing, but I don't think you really get the full affect as you would from the studio versions.
I know what you're trying to say, every single song is an instant classic, the first time you hear it.
"One on One" next, maybe? Enjoying the H&O reactions. Thank you.
Love your reactions! 💜 I think you mentioned Farm Aid, this was probably Live Aid, two different shows. It lasted many hours and the crowd fluctuated depending on the act performing. It was broadcast on TV as well, probably MTV, can't remember, sorry.
Britt…ya gotta do the studio version to get the musical nuances, it’s muy importante! You’re not getting the full genius of their talents live….pretty please, sugar on top, lol !!
Actually a lot of saxophone players can play the keyboard and sometimes play in concert and while recording. I think the reason may be that not every song will feature a sax solo or even have horns on them at all. Other than many kind of becoming dancing performing and will play too. I'm talking choreography and everything.
I was in army basic training when this came out
Some guys got bigger audiences than other guys, if ya know what I mean . . .
The groove at the beginning is sooooooooooo yummy. Not so much live as in the studio album. Truth be told, that’s what I thought I was gonna be hearing, so I’m gonna have to listen to the studio cut because this is not doing it for me.
most bands wrote their own songs in those days
This song is about NYC by the way.
Maybe you couldnt, but you should have reacted to the studio version....superior recording.
Daryl Hall & John Oates came from the 70's and 80's era where nearly all bands and artists wrote their own material and didn't rely on outside songwriters like today. I own a lot of Hall & Oates albums and nearly all their songs list the duo as the chief songwriters. They are one of the most popular duos in rock history next to the Everly Brothers if I remember right.
"Daryl's House" is a must watch! Allen Stone is a guest on one episode, and Daryl Hall they are amazing together!
he's a Philly boy.
Please, please, PLEASE, check out the version they did of this with Aloe Blacc on 'Live From Daryl's House.' It's a slowed down, more soulful version, and I promise you it's one of the greatest musical performances you'll ever come across. Chills!
This is fun but the studio version is a different vibe! Great song!
They are from Philly
The studio recording is so much better. You should react to that version.
Any of the studio recordings of this song are so much better, check one out when you can.
Boney James is a phenomenal saxman and he also plays keyboards
Hey can i ask you need to check out Live from Daryl house ! Can i suggest esp 66 the song carmel , thank you
Hola Britt, You are so great at this! ...Hall and Oats had so many big hits you could or should take a listen to. Sarah Smile was my all time favorite but in addition to the ones you have done, Rich Girl is amazing, One on One, Private Eyes, Kiss on My List, and You Make My Dreams were all big hits and worth your while. Their music has stood up to time well and I can listen to it now and still want more!
Sound quality on that clip is really bad.
It is common knowledge that Prince wrote ALOT of songs for other artists... but as far as I know H&O wrote their own material.
SHE'S GONE
I know you already know the song. But even on your own time watch "Live from Darryl's House" with Ceelo Green singing Forget You. Of course, they sing the original lyrics.
The series has over 80 episodes with Darryl singing with different artists in each episode.
You have to react to “ one on one “ by hall & Oates .. you’ll love it
Not a good version, should have done the original vidieo.
This is Live Aid and not Farm Aid. A major charity concert event in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in America and in England .. broadcasted live on MTV at the time.
Awesome reaction girl you okay you. Need. Water. If you really want to hear something crazy and instrumental do yanni the storm you will totally freak out there are no words but it's awesome 😎😎😎. Make sure it's live version
Philly is their hometown. I agree with another viewer who commented that you should listen to the studio version, too, on you own time. It doesn't have as many adlibs, but you can get a better feel for the pulsing drive of the song. They just possesed a magic, hit-making song ability. There's definitely more for you to love. :)
Just wait till you see some of the "live from Darrell's house" shows.
This is a strange concert. Is he high? 😂😂😂. Never seen him perform llike that. This is more a cool chill song. Very sensual,... but hes being poppy. I. Know i aint the only one thinking this 😅😅😅
MOST successful recording/performing duo of all time.
Out of touch is a good song too by H&O
good 1
⚠️ FRANTIC WARNING: Watch out! Britt will chew you up! ⚠️
♾️ Universal response: Sounds risky! And worth it!❤
Yup, they wrote their stuff.
She plays live versions because of copyright issues.
this is American side of the Live Aid concert that Queen brtought the house down on!!! Phil Collins of "In The Air Tonight" actually played BOTH side - did one side & flew to the other side & performed there also!!!!!!
I have suggestions, but check out anything from Live from Daryl's House
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin would switch between bass & keyboards or organ in songs.
Geddy Lee of RUSH would sing & switch between bass & keyboards on songs.
Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen would switch between electric guitar & keyboards on songs.
There's many artists that would bounce between instruments within a song.
