Yeah, I do notice that too about Daryl and John, and how John seems to know just the right moments to "yield" and let Daryl be Daryl. I love John too, I totally respect and trust his judgement. I feel safe with him. He seems more grounded, as he was saying, and if I may be so bold to add that John is probably the one who is the more secure about himself, he doesn't seem like he has anything to try to prove. Daryl, though he has the "brighter feathers", I honestly feel that deep down, Daryl probably knew ever since way back then in the beginning, that he needed John's stability, and consistancy and guidance. I can tell that John is way bigger on the inside than on the outside. He is a good team player. And by the way, John looks cute in this one, like he's had time to rest and regroup. I've never seen John looking this relaxed, like he is finally "allowed" to have peace! But on the other hand, Daryl doesn't look his usual cool calm and collected self in this one. He looks like he's barely able to hold it together for this whole interview thing, like he was not really comfortable for the duration of this session, like something was bothering him. I wonder why? Daryl, the usual powerhouse of strength?? Daryl, fiercely good looking, and slightly intimidating, to not be at ease, for once? Ladies, just because he's hot, looks aren't always everything. John is the voice of reason. I see that. You need both. Like Ying and Yang. LOVE YOU BOTH!!! But it was nice seeing the guys all in a friendship man/bro formation, all colorful beautiful musicians, doing what they love to do best, singing and making music!
@@youtubefan754 Well said. I've always felt Daryl needed John to get started and then wanted the spotlight to himself. John wrote many of their big hits, including the first to get radio play, She's Gone. They also co-wrote many of their songs and co-produced, along with help from the Allen sisters. John took the support role for the good of the team. Daryl was smart to do the Live from Daryl's house, but by leaving John out (mostly), was making a statement that he was mostly solo now. I am loving John's latest solo album. Wish them both well, but can understand why John might want to fully separate at this point.
I love you Daryl and John. I danced my socks off to your music. I’m now 87 and still listen to you every day. Thank you for sharing your talent on U Tube for free. ❤❤
Such intelligent, decent guys. It's heart warming when you see people like Hall and Oates - massively talented, with intellect and humility. Very impressive men. And what a great team - chalk and cheese or as John says here 'Fire and water'. They are a magical combination that's for sure.
I came across their song Out Of Touch on instagram & i got goosebumps, cried and felt like i heard it hundreds of times. I was born in 1984 and my mom listened to it all the time while she was pregnant with me. Today Im watching all their interviews & listening to the song non stop.
I heard "Sara Smile" on AM Radio in 1976 and fell in love with the music of Daryl Hall & John Oates. I've seen them in concert in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s (the most recent time with my kids who now love Hall & Oates too!). Thanks, Daryl and John, for such outstanding, rockin', soulful music.
I love Daryl Hall and John Oates. Daryl is such an amazing singer and performer, that it's easy to miss what a prolific songwriter and guitar player John is. Look up their early albums, or just watch him riff during one their live shows. He has serious skills.
Daryls aging like fine wine and his voice sounds even better today. Loved HO since the very beginning. I love listening to Daryls house with some fantastic guests.
@@LisaGemini I was thrilled to receive an autographed Advanced Readers Edition of Change of Seasons. The book is a must read for any Daryl Hall and John Oates fan.
Watching this 2003 interview today, in July 2024, is sad. They were talking about how much they endured together and still came out of it at the other end, without breaking up. And now... they broke up a couple of months ago after 50 years together. What an incredible band, and so many amazing hits. They were the first rock act I saw in concert, back in August of '83. They were awesome back then, and they got even better throughout the rest of the 80s. I hope they find a way to settle their differences and re-unite someday.
I saw them in West Virginia in 2019 . I took my son with me wanting him to hear some of the best music of the 80s . We had great seats and I got to say “ Hall & Oats are one of the best concerts Iv been to & Iv been to a lot in my 65 years ‘’
Just think 2 years after this...John's good friend, Hunter Thompson, unalived himself. Hearing him talking about reinventing himself...i wander if it meant getting out of the drug/party scene.
I love you guys... and yes, predominantly musicians... not the performance and show artists.... the music is the show.... much better than the jumping and the humping.
There's a mystery to Jon Oates persona that intrigues me. He's like the most perfect back up man in music. And I'd you know anything about making music, the Backup Guy is THE GUY!!!
Saw them at the fair in Canada about 5 yrs ago. Admission was free thru the fair gates. It was a packed crowd but most of the people left by the time they did Private Eyes. Crazy!
@@jerryhuffar6561 Wish I could have seen them in the mid 80s. Tney don't perform the 80's songs like they were originally made, and haven't for a long time. Guess there's always the recordings from that era..
I've seen them live once and it was fantastic. If you've been sidelined by covid postponement, hang on to those tickets until Hall and Oates tour again. My hopes are high we'll get back to things we took for granted real soon.
Saw them in concert twice, 1976 and 1978 down in Pullman ,WA @ WSU. They are still awesome. Hours listening to Abandoned Luncheonette sitting in my dorm room. They are maestros and will go down as the greatest duo EVER.
This interview was about Daryl and John but it required someone to pull things that were inside their beings. I know what Charlie Rose did was wrong. But he was one of the few interview shows that was intelligent and required a high degree of engagement from his interviewees. It is sad that Charlie's voice is gone. I also understand that it is . painful to see and here public acclaim going to a man who hurt women. The public may never forgive but I pray he finds forgiveness through God. God can restore Charlie. Great interview. I am a musician though never been a front and center performer. Daryl possesses one of the great vocal talents and musical sensibilities. But as I have gotten older I realize how important a role that John Oates plays in the success and longevity of H&O. They always seem to pick the best band members too.
I don't know man, Charlie Rose was no Terry Gross. When he asked about 'what would you change if you could go back' he seemed obivious to the question he was asking - or what John was answering. He let the interview get away from him
I was a concert committee chairman in 1986 and I introduced then to our fantastic school (St. Bonaventure) in the southern tier of NY. No one knew who they were except for only me.
I've never seen these guys in a joint interview, previously... but, in this one, they sure seem to have gotten into an argument before they went on air. There's a depressed/suppressed vibe, with a tinge of anger & sadness.
If I may say, that I notice that Daryl looks a little more easy settled here in this interview. It really seems like in the other videos (when he's wearing the sunglasses) that he is either on edge or guarded. Like from 2011, and on. Whats up with that? Did something traumatic or a possible injury happen to him?
You can love music..you can love musicians but if you truly know musicians..this interview says it all..its not all glam, fame and money..its an instinct..and most times they wanna play and go home to their family or friends vs the fishbowl
John looks really good and confident in this interview.. And Daryl is not wearing sunglasses inside, in this one. When or what year did that start, and why?
The girl knows how to be gone..........when she needs to be....... she is young.........the one gone.......... that you could not hold..........the heart gone that found a different place to belong.........
Charlie Rose hasn't learned the most important skill element of interviewing guests. Don't interrupt your guests until they are finished speaking. It's called respect. He someone continually doesn't understand this concept. He violates this in every interview I've ever seen with him as interviewer. Where are the producers...to point this out to him. Really bad news. Obnoxious. Unacceptable. I turn the interviews off. Get real, Charlie.
I agree. Regardless of whether there's a good reason for it or not, every time my ears perked up for something personal or insightful one of these guys were going to say Charlie interrupted. You need to give interviewees the time to contemplate the question to form a reply that's worth listening to.
I always liked John Oates, he steps back, lets Darryl do his alpha thing, but boy, what an amazing, thoughtful and humble gentleman he is.
Yeah, I do notice that too about Daryl and John, and how John seems to know just the right moments to "yield" and let Daryl be Daryl.

These two are so grounded and nothing like the normal rock stars✊. No drugs or alcohol which is very rare.
The chemistry between the two of them when they play together is undeniable magic and always has been.
Back then there was chemistry between them. Not so much anymore. 😬
Just pure unadulterated musicianship. Masters at work.

Great singers never got enough recognition , were ripped off by their management ......
Back when music was written with raw talent. No computers.
This interview was twenty years ago. this year they celebrate 50 years in the business. My favourite group of the 80s. so many hits so many memories
They've been playing together since the 60s!

Always enjoy hearing their interviews as much as listening to their music.

Daryl looks like a beautiful lion with his mane of hair. He is 74 now which is amazing.
And his skin is still gorgeous. Genetically & musically gifted!
and what is John Oates?? chopped liver?? they both STILL LOOK AND SOUND AMAZING!!
Not surprising. His mom and dad both attractive, both singers. Even love his speaking voice.
I’m now 57 and H&O are ⭐️⭐️🎼 Legends and good genuine people ! I saw them in 2003 “ Do it For Love “ tour in Livermore, Ca. Wente Winery 💖.
Best duo ever, absolutely love them..!
Their performances always leave Me spellbound🎸🎸🎸🎸
They have such in born talents ,they are magic performing.
And nice on the eyes as well🎶🎤❤️

I have been listening to them since the seventies. !!
Hall is the coolest guy ever. Haha!
Oates raspy voice and falsetto is such a perfect compliment to Darryls power house vocals....They balance each other perfectly
I just love them, timeless duo, really the best.
I love them! Great interview!!
So many hits, so much talent!!!!
Thank you Daryl Hall and John Oates!!
This was a wonderful interview and performance. Charlie Rose is a master at interviewing.
A master 😂 he screwed up John's last name at the beginning, he had to correct himself, out of touch putz is more like it.
And admitted women user

They never changed they just good enjoyed every minute of the song
Wow Daryl’s voice still sounded great back then. The last few years he’s seemed to struggle some. John’s voice has held up better, in my opinion.

Thank You SaraJ....great job recording this!
