    I have two of these in the kit now along with a 5DIV.
    I can buy two 5DS or 5DsR batteries and grips for the price of an R5 and adapter so will be sticking to DSLR myself. They should serve me for another 7-8 years no problem.
    So far the 5DsR has shot. Head Shots, Portraits, Wedding and Events and product work without issue. The only thing to note it the 5DsR is a bit slow compared to the 5DIV but it is still the one I grab for most jobs.

    Got a 5DS R last July, hated it at first, a pig to use, but learn it, work with it and the thing (except in low light) is amazing, never known a camera like it, went on to buy a 6D great in low light and a great all round camera, wasn't happy with the 5DS R or 6D fps speed so went and got a 1DX, and jesus that thing is mental. So then decided to go fully full frame and only last week got a 5DS, only 18k shutter count and can't see me using it as my standard go to camera on a day to day basis. The best combo for me for birds 5DS (on a 1.3 crop), Canon 400mm f5.6 and a Canon 1.4 extender.

    I couldn't afford the Canon R5 when I was looking for a high megapixel camera and while I was looking I found the Canon 5Ds for $1299.00 at B&H Photo back in November 2020 and I couldn't resist. I mostly do macro and landscapes, something the 5Ds is well suited for and I have no regrets. I have no plans to go mirrorless so buying used EF mount lenses are a bargain compared to RF mount lenses which is another reason to stick to the EF mount.

    We use the Canon 5DS for our architectural photography and portraiture because of the large file size and corresponding detail. Also, Canon has a great group of tilt-shift lenses and adapters that no other company comes close. Amazing still camera although we do wish the dynamic range was better.

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад

      Patrick, thank you for your comments. I used to have a Canon tilt-shift lens but I was able to sell it and use a far better way of controlling perspective. Several problems with the tilt-shift lens were: the cost, the weight of an extra lens and the need to carry this lens around. Part of my post production uses "Perspective Efex" which can be a standalone version or part of NIK software. I have both DXO photolab and DXO NIK software. Perspective correction is a breeze. I just scored a refurb 5DSr from Canon and the 4 year warranty from them for 1500 out the door. The camera is listed at 1199 by itself.

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад

      Thank you Atom for your helpful comment. I have just checked with Canon USA and they are now out of stock of both new and refurbished EOS 5DSr cameras. B&H have still brand new 5DSr's at $1499 and the 4 year warranty will cost 184.99 making at total of $1684.00 however, if you use the PayBoo card then the sales tax is absorbed so the amount $1684 is out the door. I suppose it is a moot point whether saving $184 is worth it when you could have gone with a brand new camera. I appreciate your success story of getting this camera.

    Im getting into cannabis photography. Flower portraits and macros specifically. Im stuck between this and picking up the new R7 thats coming out in a few weeks. May I ask you what your thoughts are? You think i should go with this camera for best image quality? I have the canon 100mm macro and the laowa 100mm macro 2:1.
    The only thing holding me back from this 5DSR is not having much video capabilities and the new super fast auto focusing system on the R7.
    Thank you so much for your time 🙏🏻

    I must have got a bargain then! A couple of years ago I found an as-new 5DsR here being sold with battery grip, spare batteries x4, box and manuals for $2,300NZ That's about 1,200 pounds sterling. It had a shutter count of 4,000+/-, so barely run in. I have used it frequently since and it works perfectly. It was being sold by a chap who got it in Hong Kong with aspirations of becoming an enthusiast, but when his wife had triplets and wanted a camera she could take images and videos of the kids, he sold it.
    I predominantly shoot wildlife and scenery, and when the 5DsR can get focus lock the images are fantastic but I also have the R5 and R6 and with their animal eye tracking and locking they are game changers in that context. I have a menagerie of Canon DSLR's going back to 2000 with the EOS D30, a camera sporting 3.2MP CMOS APS-C sensor - absolutely revolutionary in its time. I still shoot with that and it takes amazing images, but in a completely different context.

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад

      Trevor, thank you for watching my video and subscribing to my channel. Yes, you certainly got a bargain. Currently on eBay the Canon EOS 5DSr body is selling used for around US$1,300 and one sold on November 14, 2021 for US$1,799 as "unused in box" with no mention whether is was a gray import and for certain, without any guarantee. I should look for more chaps with a wife with triplets. You might find more bargains! Peter

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад +1

      John, thank your for your helpful comments and yes, I can certainly put together a video with your suggestions although it might be in around four weeks time. I gave a slide presentation last night and there was considerable interest in the workflow for the work in post production e.g. with LR and PS. I recently saw a blog whereby a person was asking what they should do when photographing a baby bear in deep shadow and dozens of people had no idea and one person even suggested using an on camera flash. This would be hilarious with the mother looking on and you might just as well pick up baby bear and place it in the sun. Either way you are likely to be "bear meat." However, taking pictures of birds in deep shade is what I do on most occasions so not only only is your suggestion of the "workflow in the field" highly important but also how to handle the image in post.

    I bought mine from Hong Kong 3 years ago at extremely low prices and use it professionally for weddings and portraits with a folding flash system. I only work with Canon fixed focal lengths and RAW development with DPP, then depending on the image I go to Luminar via TIFF. The camera plays very well up to ISO 3200, mostly I'm at 400. Every time I'm thrilled about the image quality that is possible. In my private life I have already ended up with a RP, so far professionally I see no reason for a change.

      I think that I can beat that. My first digital camera was Canon's first offering, the EOS D30 with a whopping 3.1 megapixel sensor. I used this in my commercial studio back in the year 2000 and went on to win my "Associate of the Welsh Photographic Federation" award at the Welsh Salon 2004 with a panel of twelve prints entitled:: "The wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range." The bottom line is the skill set and I still occasionally use this camera which is still in very good condition. The Canon 5DSr is amazing. You would like it.

    So I am hearing that good glass is a must to take advantage of the 50+ megapixels or you will be disappointed. Another RUclipsr was saying Canon does not recommend the EF 16-35 F2.8 that’s $2199.99 but they do recommend the Canon EF 16-35 F4 that’s $1299.99. Am I missing something?

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад

      James, I would disagree that "good glass is a must . . ." In the days of film photography 100% of the image must be right in camera. I have found that with digital photography the average ratio is 75% in camera 25% post. I myself am around 50% in camera 50% post. That means I often "mix and max" using EF glass on a Sony A7rii and using the cheapest glass for landscape photography on the Sony for the simple reason that my 5DSr is usually kitted with my 500mm f4 prime lens for bird photography. I would suggest that developing your skill in both photography and post production is more important that good glass. For general landscape work I often use the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras. This lens cost me $799 and has produced some award winning prints for both landscape and cityscapes; two prints are currently on show at a photographic exhibition. If you would like me to put together a video on this I would be only to pleased to do so and if you have other comments do please let me know. Thank you for a challenging question. Peter

      @@jameswestii454 James, I will work on the video. My concern is analogous to playing tennis. Say for example that I have been playing tennis for a year but I have decided that I want to improve my game so I find out the top tennis player in the world and find out the tennis racket that he uses and then buy the same racket for myself.Question, will that improve my game? We are all caught up in the same situation with camera lenses and I come back to developing skill in photography that is far more important than buying the latest and most expensive lens. a fantastic image camera, and I'm getting used to the little nuances to squeeze the best from it. so much more to learn and ingrain though. An absolute beast of a bargain compared to R5 and current mirrorless. Just have to work within the limitations until they are too problematic..... some of which I bet are related to the sensor size anyhow.

    Thanks so much for this review, very helpful and reassuring what the 5DSr is capable of from an IQ standpoint in 2021-22. There have been so many incredible camera releases since the 5DSr and, since I shoot landscapes and do some larger prints (24x36), I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Fuji GFX line of 50MP cameras vs the 5DSr with respect to larger prints? I'm curious because cameras like the Fuji 50r are becoming more and more affordable, but not sure how much of an upgrade in IQ this would be for larger prints? I understand the viewing distance part of this, and maybe it will make the biggest difference to the people who walk right up to the print to view it? I realize there are many factors involved here with respect to quality of the lenses being used, technique etc....so maybe it's not a fair question in that regard. Thanks in advance!!

    • @PeterLeePhotography
      @PeterLeePhotography  2 года назад

      I enjoyed reading your comment and it brought back happy memories of the time that I used the Bronica GS1 medium format camera (6x7 format). I have no experience of the Fuji GFX line of 50MP camera although I note that the price with lens is around $4500, some $3000 more than the Canon EOS 5DSr. I have just checked one of my TIFF files from the 5DSr and it shows an image of 24x36 inches at 240 ppi which would be more than adequate for your needs. I am a great fan of post-production and the ability of choosing your film emulation and filters if you so wish means that the 5DSr is really very hard to beat. I know where I would spend my money.

I'm heavily invested in Canon L glass...so I'm not likely to jump, but the MF cameras coming into the same financial stratosphere for landscape photography (among others) is exciting. I've also been interested in the EF to GF Fringer adapter which could make Canon L glass work on Fuji's MF cameras. Not sure how these are working out, but would be fun to play around with them. Hi Bam Dad, thank you for your comment. My understanding is the Canon T3i is also known as the "Rebel." That sounds like an APS-C crop sensor camera whereas the EOS 5DSr is a full frame camera. Your lenses most likely are EF-S designation. I will have to check later on the comparability of EF-S glass on the EF mount 5DSr camera. EF glass (full frame) is cheap enough and plentiful and the saving on this camera would allow you to buy an excellent EF mount lens. Regards, Peter
