I can only imagine. I left about 18 years ago and when I came out to my father and stepmother as an atheist, they kept insisting that atheists worshiped Satan and wanted religions banned. I didn't really know any better at the time but thankfully I was able to find videos on RUclips and had the internet (although it was still pretty rough in the early 2000's) to help me understand more and then help educate them. They eventually came to terms with it...somewhat. Anyway, glad you were able to break free and especially when it was significantly tougher than it seems to be today. I can't imagine being a Witness now with all the information we have available now but I'm biased. Anyway, cheers to you and I wish you the best!

  • @groovy9125

Shawna, thank you for sharing your story for us. I've been out for even longer than you have, and I too pioneered for many years. Actually I pioneered for about 7 years and it was a 100 hour per month requirement back then. And I was in the "truth" for a total of about 15 years. The idea that you have to confess to the elders, is something I'll never understand. How can these guys 'forgive' you per se, when it's basically none of their business. I've absolutely done a lot things that were considered wrong, but I never gave the elders enough respect to talk with them about it. I just figured it was my business.
On a more general scale, and on the subject of exiting this cult, we've both done good. We're out, we're free and we don't have to serve an organization which is clearly interested in publishing and real estate ventures. Being on the outside, we can now see that this is simply a corporation that does 'business' just as any other business. Only in the case of the WTB&TS, they get the benefit of tax breaks and free labor.
Our responsibility, as I see it, is to somehow help those who are still trapped within this cult. Your video, along with so many other activists videos, really help those who may be PIMO and those who are searching for "the truth about the truth". I would never criticize any Jehovah's Witness for their beliefs. After all, we were just like them many years ago, thinking this organization was God's organization. I do however criticize the Watchtower organization, as they're responsible for so much pain and suffering the brothers and sisters have to endure. From their child abuse (two witness rule) policy, to their blood policy to their shunning policy - they're causing much damage to the psyches of so many. So, good job and I'll look forward to future videos.

Roger, I simply cannot thank you for your comment. And I agree with every word! One of the reasons I wanted to share my story so badly is because I know what it was like to be so so convinced that I had the 'truth'. I would have proudly laid down my life for Jehovah, to gain his approval. But my experience showed me that this was, in fact, not a religion based on unconditional love. It's quite the opposite. Not at all where I want to be. Not if I can't be myself.
But as you say, at least we can take comfort that we are doing the right thing for ourselves. We're out. We are free. I just feel bad for those who are still so conditioned to believe they have the truth and are 'free' themselves, when in fact it is so far from the truth.
I'm looking forward to sharing more and I'm thankful that you are sharing in the story and journey with me. :)

I became inactive after the release of their 2013 Bible, after the comment from the GB member saying that they say that we add words and take away words from the Bible, he laughed and most of the witnesses laughed along with him, well I wasn't one of them, I wondered why they were introducing another translation, what was wrong with the Bible we already had, I was told that the New World Translation was the best translation known to man. After I received my new Grey Bible I went to some of my other Bibles and the Greek Interlinear translation and found to my surprise that words where added and words where taken away from the Bible. As I was told not to believe anyone, that talk about the religion as they where classed as postates and not to listen to their postate lies. Because there seem to be so many EXJW sites on line, curiosity got the better of me. I went onto the sites such as JWfacts.com and Watchtower Examination etc. I thought what could be wrong, after all the truth should hold up to scrutiny. The rest is history, even though I use to wander back and forth to the meetings and at the memorials. At the 2017 memorial the opening song was enough to wake me up about the organization, when we stood to sing a song about the chosen ones loving Jehovah, I wouldn't sing those words I sang I love you Jehovah. I told myself that night that I never go back to the kingdom hall anymore. I don't believe they are God's organization. Jesus said I will build my Church not my Watchtower Society. I truly believe through my research and looking into the Bible that this a cult, it's the worse cult ever, because they break-up families and friends, to the point that some have committed suicide, they have blood on their hands, and they shun those that don't believe in their teachings anymore, I know because when I wrote a letter of disassociation to the local congregation, my close JW friend of 14yrs will have nothing to do with me anymore. That was a shock but I found Jesus which I couldn't find in the kingdom hall.

As I had been told in the past, "you have your own Bible". Well I now understand after examining the Watchtower B&T Society Bibles. They are nothing more than a publishing company claiming to be backed by Jehovah. Well we know Satan and his followers transform themselves into angels of "light". They're shunning fits into the description of the goats at the Lord's separating the sheep and goats in Matthews account. Their teaching of no one should partake except 144000 at the memorial is not Biblical, but in reality about partaking is not what they teach but just the opposite; (because those who deny the sacrements deny the Christ.) So after their new "silver sword" was released and thoroughly examining it. I realized they really do have their own Bible designed to back their own Teachings, ( not scriptural teachings), and they set themselves in the place of JC just like religious leaders in JC day set themselves in Moses place. I now realize they are no different but really a part of Christendom, just like the rest. Scripture says it is Jehovah that teaches us. "Oh if we would only listen." Then our peace would be ....and your righteousness as waves of the sea. (Isaiah )

    MY EXPERIENCE
I love when more former Witnesses come together united adding to the new family. I know your outcry, pain, mental disparity, etc. I been baptized since June 3rd, 2012 and studying little before that. I progress fast through the " Bible teach book" publication when it was in yellow lol then progress quickly through the " Remain in God's Love" publication both within a month in a half cause I studied with my Bible teacher daily for hours. Soon qualified for my baptism at a " Special Day Assembly."
I gave many public talks, I held the microphones in the congregation meetings, I participated in the cleaning of the Kingdom Halls, I was getting more hours than what's required for regular pioneers in field service ministry .
I made many friends and even brought in some I knew from " the world." I grew an enormous love for the supposed " truth " and for Jah .
I traveled to New York driving the entire way with a group that invited me and saw all 3 "Bethel facilities ." There I saw the headquarters of the Governing Body and my connections help me see rooms and more than what they actually are to give in these tours. I have many pictures of this experience.
Traveling all throughout the country for this religion doing everything u can imagine. Yet....
I started getting extremely depressed cause the more I elevated myself...the more I was exposed to seeing which was so disturbing even heart breaking in many respects.
I notice how so many in the religion idolize man . How? Ever notice that when " Special Guest" appear now suddenly everyone comes to the Kingdom Hall Meeting and all now dress up in expensive suits with bow ties to go out in field service? All cause maybe the " Traveling Overseer " is there which was so fake to me. They call it " hospitality...yet it was idolizing cause everyone competing to get his attention. To knock on doors with him, to go out to eat with him, to talk to him first after his talks, and everyone is acting like extra than usual. Once he leaves its back to the opposite.
I also noticed that ones that come out the " world " get treated a little differently than the ones who grew up in the religion. Like in meetings...they're hands get picked first over yours. They get invited everywhere more than u. Many didnt work with me just my teacher most times daily. Times where my hand was literally ignored while sitting up front like wow!
Elders always get called the most over all and their wives then kids. It's like levels to this of favoritism. Being related to special men can get u greater protection too from wrongdoing than average ones.
Steady observing...I saw how much godly devotion, praise , and worship didnt go to " Jehovah God." It all went to the " Governing Body."
The supposed "annointed" men who are the Elites over the entire faith of Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide. They are the men elevated to God like status. Can't question them or you'll be in big trouble.
So I researched more , prayed, read Bible, and the more I began to look outside of our bias websites JW.org, or the JW broadcast, the Watchtower society's literature, etc I saw the truth about " the truth."
    Examples are as follows:
The over 5 thousand child sex abuse cases aired live on the news where the Governing Body had to speak in front of the Australian government cause their system based off misinterpretation of scripture paved the easy way of molesting children.
    * The unexpected affair the Society had with the United Nations whom we call the Beast in Revelation that replaced the " death stroked " one . Once confronted and exposed they ended the partnership to save face quickly doing damage control sending many letters and magazines to the members smh they bought it of course.
*How we quickly ban anything pagan as unacceptable to Jehovah God like Holidays, birthdays. Etc. Yet I research roots to weddings and saw that wedding " rings" are pagan customs with ritualistic beliefs to why u wear them..also the " wedding cake" and wind chimes are tied to pagan symbolism. Etc. Yet we're allowed to imitate them. I thought if its pagan stay away...yet the Governing Body can do anything even contradict themselves and the masses in the religion blindly follows and defends.
    * All the false prophecies which the Bible strongly condemns yet our Organization gave more dates of the end of the world....than just 1914. Every prophecy failed of course cause God isn't with them. So once it dont happen they tweak their words and update it to make excuses. The blind brainwashed followers excuse it and say " No they wasn't wrong, The Light was just dim not its getting Brighter. " lol Sadd
The Organization back in the day actually practiced discrimination toward African Americans especially seen evident when " Rutherford " was the man in charge. Read all his letters.
    * The supposed founder of Jehovah's Witnesses Charles Taze Russel was actually a "Freemason ." That's why the earliest additions of the Watchtower magazines had the satanic symbol called " the Knights Templar " symbol seen in Satanic churches to praise the Devil.
The " Knights Templar symbol " can also be found in honor of him after his death. Look up his burial grave site..you'll see a giant monument idol of a Masonic pyramid with the same satanic logo the Knights Templar symbol on it. Pyramids, all seeing eye of Horus, Knights Templar symbol, saturn rings worship...all used to praise not God but Satan the Devil. How disappointing yet many excuse or dont even believe it cause they are brainwashed by the cult dominated by man not Jah.
*The Governing Body had stocks in companies that made cigarettes and war planes like Lockey Martin , Boeing etc.
*Disfellowshiping! This is over exaggerated and misinterpreted from the Scriptures. God never supported flat out shunning cause it wasn't an effective tool to bringing sheep back. They use Paul words about removing a man or not eating with him etc. Or Prodigal Son. Both examples contradict shunning I'll soon make video of. This practice is user by cults when u question their leaders not really God. It's used as a fear tactic after you're baptized. Listen to whatever we say or lose your family, friends, mates, everything u know . Shunning is evil , ungodly, founded by cults, and even Satanist do the same thing . Their exist over 30 scriptures contradicting the practice of shunning. Read your Bible .
*Beards? If u have a beard you're not doing anything in relation to Jehovah's Witnesses. No scripture forbids it yet they use " you look like a hippie" as their sole basis.lol All in Biblical times had beards even Christ yet we cant preach if beard is present etc.
    * Field Service report card.
This is your hours, minutes , books, magazine placements, video showings, return visits, etc. when knocking on doors. Turn in every month. You're graded by men and must participate or you will lose privileges and be seen as non spiritual. They grade u observing u closely . Jesus exposes this practice in Matthew 6. Read it entirely.
This religion isnt the truth . It's dominated by brainwashing methods and complete worship goes to the Governing Body yet they keep telling themselves no it's for " Jehovah. "
I'm speaking out after 8years. Jehovah God isn't the issue...nor the brainwashed Witnesses...its the Governing Body more so who replaced Jah and Jesus ....and put the system in place that made all these sheeple into brainwash zombies. Ex witnesses arent evil apostates or bad people. They woke up and still love all their love ones trapped in the cult. Ex JWs not lost , they're better off. Wake up and stop judging . Love and truth always win not cults founded by Satan.

He sat drinking whiskey and i pathetically tried to witness to him and he said something that stuck with me and came to my mind when i was falling away myself. I had mentioned something about the time of the end and Armageddon was just around the corner and he looked up at me briefly and said "Oh! that's what they believe now" and took another swig of his whiskey. I was speechless as i knew what he was saying "What can you possibly say to me that will have any effect on me, been there, done it, got the t-shirt "

(well, you can, but it's tough :) Thanks for sharing your story!

This took a lot of courage to share and I respect you for that because I can only imaging the inner turmoil of going public with your experience, considering family etc. I too was raised a JW, I too left when I was approximately 27/28. I was a full time pioneer but I'm quite a bit older than you, so when I was a pioneer we had to put in 100 hrs. I too am Canadian and I worked at the Georgetown Bethel build when it was being constructed so my hours counted when I was working there. I too was giving my presentations at the door at the age of 7, my first 'talk' at 7 and baptized at 10. I was a sign language intrepretor and played the piano for the congregation plus utilized for presentations at the meetings, circuit and district assemblies. So I understand the indoctrination that you experienced and how hard it is to 'deprogram' oneself. I'm still a work in progress 30 yrs later. My family is lost to me, as they're all fully immersed in the cult, but they don't see it that way..they feel they have the 'truth'. How very sad for them not to enjoy 'real' life. I am so happy that you are now free to live life the way that you feel comfortable living it and no one has the right to tell someone who they should be attracted to. I personally am very fortunate that my son has left the religion, my daughter never was in it, and my grandchildren will not be subjected to a life of guilt for every little thing but can live their own truth as they grow up. Finally, this isn't about me, but about your courage to leave the cult and speak out about your story and I applaud you for that. You will help many in similar if not the same situation and that is a true blessing.

So sad that JW doesn't seem to teach it's followers about Jesus's ability/purpose to forgive. Confess the sin to God, not to ppl then repent, do a 180 degree turn from that sin and love God with all your being and love all others with all your being. Jackie Hill-Perry puts it beautifully when she says it shows just how important we are to God in that He judges us on how we treat others.

Glad you were able to leave the JW's! I left about the same time you did. I left about 18 years ago. I grew up a JW and became a ministerial servant at 17. I stopped at 19 and left not long afterward. I was 22 when I left. I'm an atheist now and have been since I was 22. My father and brother are still JW's but we still get along and can talk, as long as it isn't about religion. Anyway, glad you were able to break free. I can certainly understand how difficult it is to leave. Cheers to you and I wish you the best!

You came here to know yourself as The Divine knows you and if that means you express your love by your appreciation of all other living creatures or by sharing your true expression of love with another no matter race, creed or gender you are being true to yourself and The Divine, so shine on beautiful!

What courage you have to talk about the organization like this. May the true God Jehovah, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit walk with you each day and help you to continue to heal and learn his love. Religion, funnelled through earthly men, allowing them be the only interpreters of the Bible and the only ones God speaks through, is not our answer. Manipulation is not love.

I'd go for so long then give up due to the constant pressure .Yet so much of it makes sense , there so many problems in the world ,we obviously are unable to manage ourselves ,is it brainwashing or is it the truth ? I really loved your video. I became an un baptized publisher when I was really little but never got baptized. I hate that Jehovah witnesses are so homophobic I am bi sexual and I haven’t told any of my family yet cause everyone would hate me. So I got my first girlfriend at 13 that’s when I found out I liked girls we were on and off a lot. Freshman year is what really woke me up. My two best friend kept telling me all this was fake so I started researching and listening to ex Jehovah witness stories and I just woke up all in one day. When I was 13 I started becoming very depressed i got anxiety / became very suicidal/ became super shy. That is also when I got taken away from my parents for a year and had to live with my grandparents / my sexual assault happened. I am 17 now turning 18 next year and I’m so thankful that I woke up and now I’m an atheist i just don’t believe in religions anymore. I’m still very depressed. Me and my mother hardly get along we are always arguing with each other. She label’s me as a prostitute something she was at my age. And I feel like she shouldn’t be labeling me as that because I’m not like that.

Hi....I really enjoyed your first video and cant wait to watch your next one. I am probably more unusual than most of the people here because I have never been a JW nor will I ever be. I did go to meetings though for almost 3 years because the woman I fell in love with was a JW. First off let me say I feel so sorry for anyone that has been in this cult and those that have gotten out I also feel for you because I can only imagine the pain of what has to be dealt with and the far reaching effects that this devil run organization. The first night I went to a meeting I saw something was very wrong. There was a hurricane that day and when they prayed at the Kingdom Hall they only prayed for the brothers and sisters and nobody else. I didn't understand that because I pray for everyone when disaster strikes. This is a very selfish organization and they care for nobody.....not even their own people. Tell me one thing the organization does for people.... including their own????? They give nothing to nobody when they have Billions of dollars. I read verses in the bible and it is like God was warning about just this organization. They truly are the wolves in sheeps clothing. I eventually did a bible study with an elder and his wife and the girl I was dating and I agreed to it just to see how wrong they were. He ask a few questions about my knowledge of the bible and then he said " well you need to forget everything you ever learned about the bible". Can you say BRAINWASHING?? The day I quit going to meetings was the day an elder was giving a talk and he said someone left Jehovah and that someone came back to Jehovah and I realized since they had left the organization and came back to the organization that their real God was the organization. I have so many stories about things I have seen at those meetings. It was a learning experience but when I started feeling the anger you spoke of when I was in the meetings I knew it was time for me to leave. It is so good to see all these people getting out and I honestly believe the internet will bring this cruel organization down. Thanks to people like you posting these videos. Thanks for finally getting the courage to help bring them down. I wish you the best in dealing with all of the past. "strength doesn't come from what you can do.... it comes from overcoming the things that you once thought you couldn't "
God bless you and may you and all ex JW's find the peace that you so richly deserve...…..

I don't know, if the man she had the affair with , was jw but the questioning process , really threw her for a loop . stand in your truth . one of the things I have against organized religion , is that , they are so judgemental . The problem I noticed with Ex-JWs, they still call God Jehovah. God name is "I am that I am" EX3:14. In other words, God told Moses, "I don't have a name.'
If God had a name, who would dare call it to his face!
Only false gods have names, Jehovah is also a false god.

Your's is an amazing story! I am an X cult member but not JW's, another shepherding/discipleship cult (like the Duggar Family's) but I am good friends with a lovely JW lady and I would like to open her eyes to what she is under so I am gleaning what I can from your stories! Your's is a very interesting story and it really helps me a lot in ministering friendship to her because she has been raped, etc. so I think the sexual side of your story helps me know how to approach hers! Thank you for sharing! You're a very good speaker with concise content and a direct spell binding type to your sharing! Thanks again! I'll go on and listen to your story further! So glad you're out! What I see so clearly is that if Satan can't get people away from a true relationship with God through drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. he'll use religion! Take care & keep sharing!

there is a book coming out called, 'Lurking Shadows'.
It's about what most people don't know about the JW cult and a young child's journey through it. This book will put a crack in their armor. 50 years in the making.

Me too. About 20 years away, left at 27 and just finally started breaking through the mind control. If it wasn't for ones speaking out like you I wouldn't have broke free. Thank you so much. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. 😊 MINE IS THE 27 of this month too.

You're special, I'm 68, and like you a voracious reader, grew up in the RCC, and converted to the LDS, and may you don't know but 40 yrs after the LDS was formed and priesthood brought back, the founder of the JW group borrowed heavily from the LDS church and formed his group. If you study world religion at a university you are able to see those similarites.

Great story and thank you for your voice! It sure seems like the more studious the jw, the more likely they are to wake up. I also feel like there’s 2 categories of jws...ones who lean on the literature and limp along on autopilot (these always appear the best too) and ones who actually eat up the Bible and openly and genuinely read the Bible with open hearts. The latter are the ones who struggle but wake up. The brothers were probably too happy to hear about your fling 😝 FORGIVEN (as long as you keep giving us the juicy details) hehe.

I totally agree they were just wanting to hear the details and that's what really perturbed me; and I believe they forgave me because I was an asset to them and their stats... they didn't want to lose my field service hours, etc... I know now that I was literally just being used the entire time in the Org... to promote them. So so glad to be out, but also to be free mentally. :)

As a former ministerial servant, I always disturbed me how much detail the elders always demanded that people give them when they had people in committee meetings. When I was leaving, I had half a dozen committee meeting and they wanted so many details. Some of the times (probably only twice) I didn't actually do what I was in the committee meeting for. The other things I had done but they weren't all that juicy (I had started smoking cigars and drinking a good bit which isn't particularly interesting or abnormal at the age when I was leaving which was when I was around 21). I regrettably have heard some stories about things they've asked women and teenage girls which shocks me. Anyway, I'm glad you broke free. I wish you the best!

Hi Shauna, I can only imagine the grief you all had when it was revealed that your mother was writing you and the letters were not getting through. The other thing that on so many levels goes un noticed, is the physical and mental strain of keeping the .org standard. It's great to awake and shed the dead wood of being sincerely indoctrinated, and now you are living your authentic self.

It was really hard actually... I found out from my Bio Mom when she found me at 21... when she heard I had never got the letter or even knew about them, she was heart broken... there is a lot more to this story, which I will share soon. Thank you for taking the time to watch and share with me. I am so so proud and happy to be living authentically. Finally. :)

Very interesting story. and I'm so glad you got through it all but especially that you got OUT. I only wish that it had of been sooner and that your suffering was less. I just wish you'd had the chance to make a connection and build a relationship with with your biological mother. What your step mother did to make you loose your bio mum was heinous, She caused you to loose some one very precious and mightily important in your life. By the sounds of things you could of had a meeting of the minds with your bio mum. really love to hear that you found her one day soon.
I would never wish being born into a cult like this on any one, it's a 'no win' situation and brutally cruel . When you are born into it and it's all you ever see and hear, you just accept it all, and you have no reason to question any of it. It's unfortunate that you have to be on the other side of it, on the outside if you like, to to really examine and see clearly whats on the inside. When you are inside you are too busy playing the game to see whats happening all around you. When you do see it for what it is and you conclude you have to get out of it, it seems to require a whole lot of loss and suffering to do that, and that's just not fair. However I love the way you recognise that people that have had trauma of any kind and have worked through it are then, far better human beings and I can see that in you too.
Anyway all the very best going forward, best wishes from Australia.

Too many coincidences! I was just thinking before I even saw your video, I left the JW so many years ago yet my healing seems to be progressing quickly now after so many years even though I didn't think I needed any healing. I'm also a January baby, I'm also attracted to the same gender and I just came from viewing crystals on Ebay since I've always been attracted to them as a child and sometimes meditate with crystals. My self worth has gotten stronger after watching many ex-JW videos and understanding their tactics. Thanks for sharing!

Hopefully not New Age, it's another device of the devil. Just last year I burned up all my astrology stuff and tarot cards. The scary thing is, I was getting answers to my questions using tarot but who were those answers from?? It was an open door I had to slam shut.

Oh my god, I am so surprised to hear that your story is kind of similar to mine. I was raised in the JWs too and realized I liked girls very young. I repressed it a long time and when I turned 20 I got severe severe migraines. I was never baptized so I wasn't in the religion anymore by then. I also went to see a neurologist and nothing was wrong with me, they only could give me stronger painkillers. I even had migraine auras. I came out as bi when I was 21 and my migraines just disappeared. The impact the organization had on my health, without me even understanding it, was so severe. I struggled with accepting myself for a very long time. Only when I fully detached myself from all of their stupid doctrines, I could be happy and free.

I marvel at how much ground must be covered by two JWs to come together to express their same-sex love for one another in the face of such powerful homophobic indoctrination - in your case, a lifetime full - and of the consequent huge sense of guilt they would feel. I'm watching all your videos and am very happy for you seeing you escape this mind-control to find freedom. I do wonder what became of the sister with whom you had this affair. I think it's highly unlikely, but will you paraphrase Jane Eyre, to say, "Viewer, I married her"!
