In this video, I will be teaching you how to outline your lettering using the Procreate app. This technique is super quick and easy to do, and it can be applied to lettering, calligraphy, illustrations, or any other object you wish to outline.

At step 5 with automotic I had selected color fill and got this effect.
Otherwise I was not able to do step 5.

Try to turn off the color fill option. Does that work?

if your edges are looking really jagged and pixely you can feather your selection just the slightest bit as a bit of faux anti-aliasing and get things looking smoother
Hey Eric, thank you so much for the comment. That sounds exactly like it could solve the issue, but how can you do that?
@@letteringdaily While in the selection menu on the bottom bar in the middle there is a "feather" button (its a solid circle surrounded by a dashed line circle). Clicking it will bring up the slider to soften the edges of the selection.

Thank you for the great tutorial. I can’t get from step 5 to step 6 though🥺I can’t use a brush to colour the outline while in selection mode. When I opened a new layer, it just went out from the selection mode. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks🙂
Hey Windy, sorry about that! Here is one potential solution. When you are in the selection mode, is the color fill option enabled (down in the bar)? If so, would you mind turning it off and trying once again? Let me know :)

Hi, I’m a newbie, but I was just wondering, why not just use or create an outlined brush, or outlined 3D brush? Do you get a different or better effect doing it this way? Thanks so much!
Hey Lara, thanks for the question. That's a good alternative for sure. However, for me, it's better to create a clean lettering piece and then add the outline to it. For some, it might be better to do it right away. This method is also not just for lettering. Also for illustrations where having the outline coming from both sides isn't ideal. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it, it's just a matter of personal preferences. I thought this method was cool so I decided to share it :D

This video has been really helpful! However, whenever I get to the "selection" step, the thickness of the outline doesn't change at all- and sometimes I end up inverting the colors of blurring the original lettering. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong! I'm going to keep playing around with it. Any tips? I know this may be hard to determine based on this short comment! Thanks for any help.

same issue. While selecting automatic and touching only letter, it is inverting color

I am having an issue on step 6. When I create a new layer it won’t fill in the outline. It wants to airbrush the background. What am I doing wrong? I am following your steps exact...
Hey sorry to hear that. Did you make sure to follow the previous step precisely as i showed it? It is crucial to complete step 5 exactly the same for step 6 to work. Let me know :)

I thought I had followed the steps appropriately, but when I get to the airbrushing stage, it just colors over the lettering, can anyone offer any insight on what I might be doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hey Grace, when you have the automatic selection on, make sure the color fill icon is not turned on. Often times this is the main issue. Also, make sure you're touching the letters (or the object you want to outline) while in the selection mode. Let me know how it goes! :)
I followed everything and did not work for me :( I could not make work the last strep, I wonder if my program of Procreate is not working properly
Sorry to hear that. You think you can tell me a bit more about the issue you're having?
Is there a way to outline the lettering and have just the outline. Like hollow in the middle.
You have it right away! Once you've created the outline, you can just turn off the visibility of the layer that contains the lettering. You will be left with the layer that contains just the outline. Let me know if you need help. I also run a support group on Facebook made specifically to help out fellow artists :)
Ok so I couldn't explain it properly so I kind of figured it out. I made a cheap video to show you what I meant. Sorry its not professional. But I figured if you didn't know how to do it. I thought that the layer would just make an outline around the letters and not fill the whole thing up underneath. I totally understand a person getting paid for their craft but sometimes people try to keep the secrets to a certain few. What if I'm trying to outline hard text?
The process is the same for any object. Illustrations, letters, numbers, you name it. Have you tried to outline it with this method?

Why did you create 2 duplicate¿ I created 1 blur layer -> select-->brush--> resultat is the same.... or I am blind¡¿
I just did it because i noticed that i get a better result like that. If it works for you without then great, one step less in the process :)

The alpha lock part wasn't explained well at all.
Thanks for the feedback, Angelina. You can either swipe with two fingers to the right or tap on the layer and select Alpha Lock from the options. Does this help?
why tf isn't there just a non destructive "stroke" effect like in photoshop? Super frustrating

Everything works until I press Gaussian Blur, the screen turns blue and the outline transparent
Make sure you've selected the automatic selection.
