I really appreciate that you show us that you erase a lot until you’re happy. Most people just can do it in one go and I thought I was weird for redoing lines constantly. You are so easy to follow along with, thanks!!
I love it! I clicked on this video for the line information, but you answered two bigger questions / problems I was having. The "reference" setting and the "streamlining". Thank You!
Yup...sure enough! I touched on this is one of my newer videos and why I don't use it in often in the videos. I have found people skip around/don't watch the whole video so if they don't see me set up the layer, they get confused and then ask questions on how I was able to do that. I would love if everyone watched from start to finish but it doesn't happen, lol!
I love the procreate two finger tap erase. The only problem I have with it is when I draw on paper I get annoyed that tapping the paper doesn’t work before I remember I need to use an actual eraser.
Another way you can make a border outline for any of your drawings is by duplicating the later that has the shape you want to outline, fill it until it’s one solid white (or whatever outline color you want) silhouette, applying a small amount of Gaussian blur on it, duplicate and merge the layers until it starts to thicken up, using the auto selection tool and drag up the tolerance so it gets rid of all the fuzzy edges, and voila! Your new outline! I discovered this a while back and it always surprises me when I hear others who don’t know this technique XD. I also made a video on it on my channel.
It’s not so much “not knowing” that technique- it’s the fact that Procreate’s selection tool is pretty piss poor and doing this results in a line that’s not super smooth (and doesn’t look good if you are planning on printing.)
The way I make the outlines while staying in Procreate, is by using a very small amount of Gaussian blur on the layer with the white filled image. Duplicate that layer a couple of times, merge them down (they become thicker and more pronounced) and repeat that a couple of times. The smaller the Gaussian blur the crisper the result, but you have to make more duplicates.
It took me 8 months to find you since I started drawing .... I broke the web to find a decent tutorial on how to draw in this modern style . You made my day thank you
Just got myself an iPad Air 5 a few days ago and tried to start drawing without any experience or talent. After a few days and some tutorials, I was really upset because I was not getting the results I wanted. Just watched your full video and applied everything you said here. One hour later, my designs already look a lot better. You're a legend!! Thank you!
I learned that having the outline on one mask and alpha locking it, I could change the line color by painting over them. It doesn't let the color bleed to the other layers
I didn’t see where he mentioned what brushes he was using. That’s why I’m trying to find out to begin my own sketches. I’m trying to outline machinery from a photo, and don’t like the “sketching” pencils, I’m looking for a solid line to use in a brush. Ty in advance for any advice! Great drawing ability, to the video maker!!
You have just discovered a world for me, I can finally make drawings without a line and it doesn't look like someone has bitten it, THANK YOU! greetings from Spain
Just found this tutorial! Amazing - under 15 minutes you saved me days if not weeks of work. I installed procreate few weeks ago to create complex illustrations for my book and now learning it at the pace of 1-2 hours a day after work. The reference layer you mentioned and your method of creating shadows using black layer is a treasure! I will now go browse all your other tutorials to see what other hidden treasure are there :) The ones I am looking for in particular are: 1. Layer modes: multiply, difference, burn etc. So far tutorials from other people confused me even more! 2. Layer grouping but without merging 3. Perspective tool to create scenes and larger characters, e.g. to plan location/size of eyes, paws, etc. Thank you again for an amazing tutorial!!!!
Great tutorial and process demo. As a beginner in Procreate, I really appreciate the straightforward, clear presentation of info. Earned my subscription.
You showed how to select one layer, then move to another layer and clear the second layer of any overlapping pixels. I've been manually erasing to remove those extra pixels. This is much faster and will save me so much time as the designs I do very often require that technique. Thanks!
I like your program and how you teach, so I came back to your videos to find out more of how to ink in the illustration. So you don’t have colour bleed.
I just finally purchased a iPad pro to learn how to use procreate and you make everything look easy and fluent. I'm gonna have to play around a bit it seems lol I'm not good with the shading ir shadows with the light you where putting lol
This was an AMAZING tutorial! I learned so much in that small amount of time! Have you done a tutorial on the next stage in this process (formatting the drawing file for print on tshirts)? What does that look like in procreate?
Video is amazing and techniques! Thank you for your video in real time without the crazy sped up versions I see on RUclips. This is the way to make a video with explanations and actually speaking and showing and I really appreciate you for taking the time to do this a learned a lot and subscribed 😊
Awesome...thanks so much! I really strive to show everything in "real time" with explanations because I think it is so much more conducive to learning the techniques! My videos might run a bit longer than the usual RUclips "tutorials" but there is a reason for that...I want everyone to learn as much as possible! Thanks for noticing!
Very useful video! One question: On the layer where you create the white outline and warp it outside of the top layer - why not use a uniform transform of the white layer and just increase the size, allowing you to keep the outline clean and width consistent?
Have had a lot of people leave this same comment...on a design with a bunch of curves , this doesn't work- does not give a uniform spacing/stroke. Try it and see what I am talking about!
You decide which angle the light is coming from, then you simply paint in the light - the shadows are usually opposite to the light for the most part. If the sunlight is behind you, your shadow is in front and so on.
Have my 12.9” on the way. didn’t even think about how easy sketching would be and having no erase marks or faint old lines. I am so excited to get drawing again. For a while I was doing pen tool on illustrator and i felt pretty limited.
Hey BeeJay, I really enjoyed the tutorial...I'm really new to drawing with the iPad, but, I'm looking forward to learning. I noticed that you didn't have a screen cover on your iPad, or maybe I couldn't see it? If not, doesn't really slide a lot? I'm thinking about getting a screen protector but I was wondering if you would suggest some that would be good? Great tutorial tho...learned a lot, in short time, thanks!
The undo function with the two finger tap has gotten to me so bad that sometimes when I'm sketching on traditional I catch myself doing it lol. Thanks for sharing this!, it's super helpful :)
I love when I watch a video and learn something new. I didn't know about the reference feature when doing line work. This will make things so much easier! thanks
There is an app called SketchClub. If you save your main graphic in Procreate as a PNG, you can then import it into SketchClub. This app has a “selection tool” that you can select the graphic with. If you do the “duplicate” trick you used here you can select that layer and then expand the selection to make a border area. I throw a light blur on the outline layer to soften the edges a bit as the “selection tool” is pixel perfect and too sharp. Great video and your art is Damn! man! Good stuff
Oh and I am interested in how you prepare a canvas for creating a design to print in a t-shirt and how to set it up, save it and uploading so I get the right DPI , size for print and quality design. Any ideas. Also taking a pre made shape and creating coloring within the tool too.
Thank you for showing us this -- can you comment on what type of brush you are using? I searched your gumroad but I didn't see anything that looks like it.
For the stroke issue, you can always copy the entire illustration into a new layer, resize it a bit bigger putting the layer underneath and then going to adjustments: hue, colour, saturation and changing the entire image to whatever colour you want the stroke to be, or just alpha locking the layer and painting the it in
"Right layers for what"...not sure I follow. My process for layers is sketch, lines, colors, highlights, and shadows. This is in pretty much all of my videos so if you are looking for something else, let me know!
@@BeeJayDeL sorry i meant a video for beginners how to use layers properly. i always use one layer to do everything from colour to the background. i would like to know which way is the best way to go out it. and awesome videos you have helped me heaps :D
Danny Draws Gotcha...that’s pretty much what I do in most of the Let’s Draw videos with the finished, colored pieces in the thumbnails...check those out!
Do you use an iPad or Wacom? And are you able to rest your palm on the screen? And do you use Paperlike? I’ve only ever drawn in paper, but I’ve grown increasingly more interested in digital art and drawing. Likely because I’ve been manipulated by algorithms.
What brushes did you use. I just found your channel and it’s great! Do you think in he description you could write what brushes you use to colour, sketch and outline.
Thanks for the great tutorial vid. I learned a lot. My favorite part was making the line art layer the reference layer. It made coloring easier. I just noticed in the last technique where you let the background do the lining, we lost the white highlights. But overall, i love this tutorial vid. 😊

im so happy i found your page. do you screen print your designs on the tshirts or do you ever use digital printing....digital may show a lot of shine or more pop colors if you use a lot.
Awesome video and I bought your pencils immediately after the video! But I was just wondering, which pencil did you use for the sketch (because you didn’t show which one) and is the pen for the black outlines the „Blending Stump“?
Nevermind, I have just seen that there is a cartoon brush pack. I bought that now too lol, but the question remains. Which brush did you use for the outlines?
I use something called the Natural Inker brush that I found years ago on the Procreate forums...check out one of my newer videos for a link in the description that directs you to where you can download it!
That was a brush that was something I originally found on the Procreate forums that I have since stopped using after making my own brushes from scratch (which is what is in the brush pack for sale in the video description.) I know the original poster had pulled the download file for that brush (not sure if it was ever reposted.) I also had made so many adjustments to that one that people didn’t realize they would have to do the same and it caused a lot of confusion. My brush pack features all the brushes I currently use with all of the settings already fine tuned and ready to go (there is one in there similar to the one in this video but is actually so much better.) Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for that helpful video, but I still got some questions nobody seems to be able to answer - maybe you could make a quick video about it: I want to use a drawing from my sketchbook which I scanned to my Ipad, but if I open it to procreate, it will be always on a very low resolution. Is there a way to open it in a higher resolution? And if not, is there a way to copy my outline onto a bigger canvas? Thanks for your help, very much appreciated! :))
Not sure how you are scanning it. I would start with a large canvas size and then add your drawing from there (sounds like the way you are doing it, Procreate is opening the scanned pic itself at whatever dimensions it is saved at.)
Used to paint Hard to admit that I used to paint Natural light on a human face Stenciled fire on his roommate's bass It was blooming addiction Amiss in the pushing of pigment Book like a tattooed pigskin, look Pinhead kids of the minute Drank Kool-Aid from a tube of acrylic And it grew up into linseed oil over linen Joy to the poison, voice of the resin Capture a map of the gesture Back up, add a little accurate fat to the figure :)
This is a remarkable demonstration. Got a new subscriber! if you dont mind me asking, which generation of iPad Pro is this? looking forward to watching your other videos!
@@BeeJayDeL purchased an iPad pro 1st gen 12.9 and I couldn't be more happier. Thank you for your Insight and recommendation. It's the ultimate powerhouse.
Not an expert here... but would it work if you just re-sized the bottom layer instead of warping it? Then just sliding it until there is even coverage?
A lot of people have left this same comment over the past year-that would work on basic shapes but not on something like the design in the video- some lines will end up close, some further away. Give it a try to see what I am talking about.
So say you wanted to put that skull on top of a picture for a thumbnail you could just make the background green and chroma key it out right? Could you also import a picture to procreate, then trace out the part you want and make the background green so you can use the portion you want as an overlay on top of another image?
Just a tip Bro, regarding the Eraser Streamline comment you had made. I too hate it when small things like that are affected. So, I make a few Duplicates of Brushes I prefer to Erase with, I put them in a category of their own (Marked “ERASER BRUSHES”). I then adjust each brush to how I want it to perform. So when they’re Duplicated, the “Streamline” option will no longer be invoked when the same brushes are tweaked. Your eraser brushes are essentially left alone. Hope this helps
Ace video man! Love the way you work, really informative and well constructed video. Could you talk about canvas sizes and dpi in one of your videos please? What size to work at for a t-shirt maybe...thanks, I’ll be watching...
For me, it depends on the mood of the artwork I'm doing! Right now, I've been doing a lot of fall themed art, so I make my lines layer in a very dark red, duplicate it, then take one lineart layer and apply a gaussian blur to it and it looks soft!
I really appreciate that you show us that you erase a lot until you’re happy. Most people just can do it in one go and I thought I was weird for redoing lines constantly. You are so easy to follow along with, thanks!!
I constantly undo/redo lines and am not afraid to show it, lol! Thanks for watching and appreciating that fact!
Caitlin Rose Riiight? Like Gal Shir. Makes me feel bad for not getting lines right the first go.

But when you do get it on the first go it like a party 🥳
That is a breath of fresh air. I see too many heavily edited tutorials that do not show the real process of drawing. You are dead on Caitlin!

Nevermind, I have just seen that there is a cartoon brush pack. I bought that now too lol, but the question remains. Which brush did you use for the outlines?
Do you have a tutorial or preference video on the brushes you use in procreate? Especially for line work?
I use something called the Natural Inker brush that I found years ago on the Procreate forums...check out one of my newer videos for a link in the description that directs you to where you can download it!
OH MY GOD WHAT INKING BRUSH IS THAT? it’s beautiful 🤩 I’m looking for a good inking brush on procreate but syrup is too pixelated so yea
Thank you very much for that helpful video, but I still got some questions nobody seems to be able to answer - maybe you could make a quick video about it:
I want to use a drawing from my sketchbook which I scanned to my Ipad, but if I open it to procreate, it will be always on a very low resolution.
Used to draw - hard to admit that I used to draw.
;D
I have the same hoody XD
get back at it homie, it's only your decision.
Used to paint
Hard to admit that I used to paint
Natural light on a human face
Stenciled fire on his roommate's bass
It was blooming addiction
Amiss in the pushing of pigment
Book like a tattooed pigskin, look
Pinhead kids of the minute
Drank Kool-Aid from a tube of acrylic
And it grew up into linseed oil over linen
Joy to the poison, voice of the resin
Capture a map of the gesture
Back up, add a little accurate fat to the figure :)
This is a remarkable demonstration. Got a new subscriber! if you dont mind me asking, which generation of iPad Pro is this? looking forward to watching your other videos!
Thanks so much! I'm using a 1st Gen iPad Pro 12.9"!
@@BeeJayDeL purchased an iPad pro 1st gen 12.9 and I couldn't be more happier. Thank you for your Insight and recommendation. It's the ultimate powerhouse.
This video is great! Most useful shadowing/outlining video I have watched yet.
I’m switching from traditional pen and pencil to digital art. How should I manage my expectations?
do you use any covers for the screen? i know there are some "paper covers" out there so that drawing/writing feels like on real sheet of paper
This is the one I use:

I just started using PaperLike screen protector and I love it so much more than the feel of glass!
So say you wanted to put that skull on top of a picture for a thumbnail you could just make the background green and chroma key it out right? Could you also import a picture to procreate, then trace out the part you want and make the background green so you can use the portion you want as an overlay on top of another image?
No reason to chroma key anything- that’s what a PNG with a transparent background is for!
Thank you for this tutorial this helps a ton. I want to learn cartooning to be able to hand paint into a hotrod pinstriping design.
I see you use Natural Inker, but you appear to have custom settings, if you don’t mind, do you use Pressure Taper, or Touch Taper?
I’m following along but what brush were you using when tracing? None of the ones I’m using is looking right
I use a custom brush...Standard Inker...part of my cartooning brush set (link in description.)
Thanks for the suggestion...I will touch on that for sure! Thanks for watching!
Simon Wilson i second you, its literally ace video 🙏🏻
@@meharbachani7012 Thanks!
You have no idea how much this video helped me. 🙏
My guy, you get an automatic sub just for that Aesop Rock hoodie! ❤
Great tutorial!
For me, it depends on the mood of the artwork I'm doing! Right now, I've been doing a lot of fall themed art, so I make my lines layer in a very dark red, duplicate it, then take one lineart layer and apply a gaussian blur to it and it looks soft!
Awesome stuff! What brush were you using?
