What I love about his work is that he doesn't as far as we can see spend half his day walking back and forth for things he uses. I had a small plastering crew years ago and there was always a couple of guys that would get out of the truck and walk to were the work was only then to walk back to their trucks for tools they needed. I made it a point to go over everything we would do the next day so they would know what tools they would need when getting to work. Never failed someone would forget even the basic of tools. Everyone of them knew which tools to take to their trucks at the end of the day just not what to take to the job.
I said this on one of his earlier videos. It's the only 'show' I can sit here and watch, even though it's just work or cooking noises and I'm completely mesmerized and blown away. When I think of any kind of utopia or 'heaven on earth' I think of cabin living out in the wilderness. I hope he does some smoked fish and meats come spring or summer!
I’ve watched lots of your videos and I’m understanding the term self reliant now. We see what it means for you, but for myself I’m 76, a widow of 2 years. I live alone with my little dog. I find peace and joy in the simple everyday things around me. I’m going to remain self reliant as long as I can.
I have been watching your videos since you started to build your cabin. I just love it. I was born on a farm off the grid in Brazil. I lived in California from 1960 until 2007. Now I live in Maine and again in a farm, but with all the good things...I mean electricity, ruining water etc....cable TV and Internet. But I still admired us living off the grid. Your wife is very lucky to have you. I am 85 years bow, Now I love to see people like to follow their dreams. Stay healthy and happy. You are doing a fantastic jpg. We also had a sauna. Having just retired from the drudgery of work, am becoming increasingly persuaded by these videos to actually get up off my butt and build an off-grid cabin for myself and my wife over the next few years on a plot of land we have in the French Massif Central. I agree!!!! I fell asleep watching the build of the Cabin. I believe the crackling of the burning wood, flowing water, cutting down the trees and how he methodically cut, carved and positioned each log was sooooooo relaxing, I fell asleep. At first, the process of this journey was intriguing it kept me awake and before I knew it, I fell asleep.

One of the best parts of this channel is watching Shawn cook lol, the burgers, steak, stews and pizza man it's torture, you can almost smell the food through the video.
I love watching how you measure and cut every piece of wood that fits perfectly into place. The best part is when you start cooking with those well seasoned cast iron pans, I collect Griswold cast iron pans and they are easy to cook with especially if they are seasoned correctly. I don't have to wash them, just scrape with a metal spatula and wipe with a paper towel. Watching your video's makes me want to go out and do something, whether its lawn work, painting and all the rest of it. Thank you!

Your place is starting to resemble my great grandfathers house. It started as a cabin and as the family grew so did the additions to the home. When I was a little kid the original one room cabin was the kitchen, still had a four eye wood cook stove next to a propane one. Most all the lumber was cut from his land and run through a ancient saw mill that you could still see parts of in the barn. Back then the blade was as tall as I was.Going to his farm was always like stepping back in time. It always felt like a good place to be.

I used to think that self reliance meant off grid living and a home grown organic lifestyle. But now I think it’s more about being self reliant for your own happiness. Not being reliant on other people for personal happiness is a huge advantage. The spreading of positivity is inevitable. This is something modern narcissism cannot achieve. For they are reliant on other people. For everything.

If everyone built a cabin and used wood to heat the home we would be in worse condition with air quality than now. Burning wood is the worst maybe along with coal for the environment. In Mongolia i believe they use coal..the kids are all ill from the pollution. Houses too crowded for burning this stuff

Most all the lumber was cut from his land and run through a ancient saw mill that you could still see parts of in the barn. Back then the blade was as tall as I was.Going to his farm was always like stepping back in time. It always felt like a good place to be.

I used to think that self reliance meant off grid living and a home grown organic lifestyle. But now I think it’s more about being self reliant for your own happiness. Not being reliant on other people for personal happiness is a huge advantage. The spreading of positivity is inevitable.

If everyone built a cabin and used wood to heat the home we would be in worse condition with air quality than now. Burning wood is the worst maybe along with coal for the environment. In Mongolia i believe they use coal..the kids are all ill from the pollution. Houses too crowded for burning this stuff
