    The shells are Keller VSS. They came from Precision Drum in New York. I had them cut the bearing edges and they do an excellent job.
    The only thing I did to the shells is in the video. Which is cleaning the edges before applying the masking tape and tacking them off with a tack rag before spraying. Nothing else was done prior to spraying.
    Hope you enjoyed the videos.

    Yes these show some wood grain in the purple area. You can apply it by hand and see what happens. My suggestion is to go buy a 4'X4' piece of furniture grade plywood at a lumberyard and test your technique on it first. But yes just staining it will show the woodgrain, you just skip the step of applying the solid fade color. But you do want to apply the same amount of clear used here so the drum is smooth. The woodgrain will stand out beautifully that way!! Good luck and let me know how it goes!!

    Thank you so much for this series! I was going to do on on refinishing a late 90's Pearl Export kit. But why?

    Yes you can! I'm really not sure of the results if you don't "spray" the dye. If you brush or sponge it on I have no idea what it will look like. It "may" or may not have dark or light areas if not sprayed evenly. You should perform all the steps up to the middle of video 6. In video 6 it says to only apply one coat of clear. I would apply no more than 4 and no less than 3 good wet coats. Let it dry a few days then skip to the sanding and buffing videos. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!

    why did you spray with the gun sideways instead of adjusting the nozzle for vertical spray pattern? Just curious. Seems odd to turn the paint gun like that in my opinion. Great results regardless. Best wishes and happy drumming.

      When you paint as many full cars as I have you learn to work with a standard setup. There are a few situations you paint like that on a car and it's pointless to stop and change the air cap position.

      @@stuperprohero I see. I have just seen many of the spray guns that allow you to simply twist the cap and that changes the spray pattern. Regardless...your results certainly speak for themselves. Well done.

    I want stain my drum set so that the stain includes some wood grain through the finish, and I also want to apply the stain by hand. If I mix the paint like you did, can i apply the stain by hand? Also, will it make wood grain visible on my drum? Of course, after using something to raise the grain.

    hey, if i was to not do the fade with the black, could I just buy the same purple dye, mix it as per directions, and apply it as I would a stain? I REALLY like that purple, its just what I've been looking for. thanks!

    For a hard Maple shell, is it necessary to first raise the grain with some water?

    • @stuperprohero
      @stuperprohero  2 года назад

      I didn't raise the grain, however I did use 50% water to 50% alcohol when mixing the dye to allow the color to penetrate sufficiently.

    HelloAny tips on prepping the shell before spraying the dye? Do you raise the grain with water or does spraying the dye eliminate splotches?

      +Vahe manoukian Sorry I'm so late. I didn't really do anything to prep the shell for dye. Spraying is a more even application method.
