Thank you for using Blue Dawn/ water mix for cleaning. Ive been preaching this for years. Too many using tinfoil and coke or WD40..steel wool ..all these things DO scratch chrome.

Always step 1 - even on cymbals. I will admit, I've used tinfoil and WD-40 to remove surface rust from hoops, though I might try cape cod cloths next time

Roger Taylor of Queen used the same drums at Queen's live aid performance if I'm not mistaken, only his had the mach lugs..

Most likely did - they're fantastic drums

Great vid! Based on the shell construction and the Monroe Label/ approx vintage, I’d say it’s a Ludwig Super Classic kit. They were basically made as lighter version of Classic Maple. (Same price, same hardware) Relatively rare and premium kit, your client has been lucky. Ludwig has some info on the website in Literature- shells.

Appreciate the insight! Did super classic's have a thicker floor tom? It's something I'm bringing up in the next vid - it's way thicker than the toms

@NickCostaMusic definitely super classic. All drums came with the same construction. Floor tom is most likely not original to the kit

Great job Nick! I’m a fan of Berkeepers Friend for tough hardware cleaning also.

I'm seeing it in Ludwig's 1981 catalog, but not in the 1980 catalog (yay for vintage drum catalog websites!).

      The modular hardware!

Awesome! Do you have a link to your preferred vintage drum catalog site?

I think your Modular hardware timeline is correct - I don't see it until the '82 catalog. Based on similar serial numbers I think your 1990 guess is probably pretty accurate. Super Classics were 4-ply, Classics were 6-ply, but given your comment on the lightness of the shells I think these are maybe Super Classics. The natural finish looks amazing. 100% feel you on the audio struggles!

Such a cool idea, though man did it make the shells really heavy! Also, the floor tom is way thicker than the rack toms

Evaporust brother!!!! It works the best when you’re trying to remove rust and tarnish

I just heard about this stuff - it’s unreal on tools! Didn’t even think to try on chrome hardware - great tip, thank you!!!

What do you recommend for cleaning Ludwig black oyster finish from the 60’s.and pearl finish my Roger’s 380 it’s yellow through the years but on the bottom of the bass drum.it’s well preserved un touched

I always recommend trying warm water and blue dawn first. Most of the time that can fix all of it. Novus #2 can help without being too abrasive, too

I think that those are 4 ply super classic shells, also used in Rockers, but I'm NO expert. Where you count 5 could be at the overlap. See what others say.

Good to know! I didn't realize this til after the vid, but the floor tom is way thicker than the toms. Can't remember if it's classics or super classics but one of those series had varying thickness shells

@NickCostaMusic No worries, mate. I subscribed! Love the old ludwig classic kits! My drem is to own one oneday! Also, did this kit come with the original rockers' heads?

    • @NickCostaMusic
      @NickCostaMusic  5 месяцев назад +1

Oh right on, thank you @80smusicfan90 ! You'll definitely get it one day, they're super popular right now like all vintage drums.
This kit had old remo heads on it - though it would have been rad to see rockers on it!
