    I started the Sony journey with the a6000, then got the a73. The thing that strikes me most as much improved is color accuracy and skin tones. I then moved to the a7C and there another small improvement in color, but even more so in autofocus accuracy especially in video. Because I learned on the a6000, I don’t miss not having extra buttons from the a73. I love this camera!

    Awesome buy! As a new a7c owner myself (and coming from an a6500), I've made the resolution to make the transition without sacrificing what drew to me APS-C in the first place, that is: only use gear I'll be willing to carry around. For that, it should: be small/lightweight, deliver good image quality, be inexpensive enough that it doesn't feel too precious. So far, I've picked the sony 35mm 1.8, and am currently eyeing the new sigma 28-70mm f2.8.

    Would love to see a video addressing what the aps-c sigma lenses look like at super35/crop mode on the a7c, and what full frame glass looks on the aps-c bodies. How do the lenses look on swapped bodies, and overall how usable are they compared to their native bodies?

    • @chuckcarter847
      @chuckcarter847 2 года назад +1

      Personally I would just start buying new full frame lenses as you can afford them. APS-C lenses shooting just pictures are cropped into the larger sensor. So your mega pixel size goes from the full frame of 24MP down to 10MP. While Super35 gives your image in the viewfinder a normal looking view - with no circular vignette that you get with Super35 turned off, you take a big hit on image resolution.

    Congrats on the purchase! I've been considering upgrading to the a7c from my a6400 due to the lack of lenses for Sony APSC.

  • @chuckcarter847

    As one of the first A6500 adopters with an early preorder - I thought I found the camera that would change my photographic life after having sold years of Nikon gear. And guess what? It did and for the better in too many ways to count. I bought an A6400 as a backup and a ton of APS-C lenses thinking I would just build on that. I was wrong.
    After selling a bunch of APS-C lenses, my A6400 and I bought the A7C. Finding the overall picture quality is amazing and the IBS is so much improved from my A6500 as well as the improvements in Low Light shooting and the lack of serious noise in really high ISO settings (8000) - color is improved, response time, and above all else - the AF is fast and nimble depending on your lens. Huge improvements in all categories.
    I got the 28-60MM kit lens with the A7C and let me say this - it's a sweet little piece of kit. Super sharp images, very fast AF and small and lightweight - a perfect match for the A7C. Now time to start getting more full frame lenses.
    So far I'm just as excited about a new camera as I was with my beloved A6500! The A7C is a very nice camera - but I have to disagree a little with Arthur. He seems to put limits on the camera as more a prosumer or family or travel camera... So far my experience is this camera is that it's capable of much much more. I guess it's all in the eye of the photographer.

    My opinion as a APS-C user: I have a A6500 with the great Sigma f1.4 trio and the great 16-55G f2.8 and I absolutely love the small form factor of this combo. That's THE reason for APS-C. What would be the reason to swith to a full frame A7C? Either better lowlight performance (this is not relevant for me) or having a shallower DOF (blurrier background). For me only the latter would be interesting. But if you really want to make use of the full frame's DOF advantage, you have to use equivalent focal lengths (compared to what you use on APS-C) with the same aperture. For example 85mm 1.4 instead of the 56mm 1.4 on APS-C. And then it gets easily REALLY big, heavy and expensive with full frame, that's the whole problem.

    Hey Arthur, I bought that A7C too now. You think I can cover most video needs with:
    Sony 20mm F1.8G, (because I love the images people took with that one)
    Sony FE 85mm F1.8 (because its needed and cheap)
    APS-C 20mm Pancake, that'll be ~30mm on A7C, (because lens budget is done for and I already have it) . . . ?
    Mostly do low light photography and video. Some Zoom lens for video, I'll have to find eventually...

    I've had this camera for a few months, and I like this camera. It's the only camera on the market that meets my narrow parameters for a perfect compact camera: good photos, great autofocus, good low-light, usable for long-form videos. However, I just wish it had a well thought out control scheme that made it easy to use from the screen. It just feels like a camera whose interface was supposed to have more buttons and dials but lacks them. My Canon M6 Mark II was much easier to use and it has a similar number of physical dials and buttons. And I've had Panasonic and Olympus cameras with very few controls in the past that didn't feel as opaque as this Sony at times. I still prefer my Canon R6 as a serious camera, but I think the A7C is the best casual camera on the market, but it could have doubled as a more serious camera if Sony had tried a tiny bit harder.

    Better low light, colors in the same small body. Most importantly better for ultra wide shooting as there is less of quality apsc ultra wide lens.
    I like also better bokeh of FF. I wish it would come out as A7Rc with 8K though, 25mp starts to feel too little.

      @@powerlurker I do use either E mount lenses or A mount lenses. I do found that manual focus on Sony A7 is superior for Macro, Landscape and Portraiture but for fast moving object you need AF. So I bought adapter La-ea4 and I enjoy the old Minolta lenses like, 28mm f2.8, 50mm 1.4, 135mm 2.8, 500mm reflex f/8, Sigma Macro 105mm f2.8, small and big beer can lenses. These way you can use them with fast AF or manually.
      But I do own some E lenses such as:
      Sony 24-105 mm f/4 G with OSS, Samyang 35 2.8, Sony FE 50mm 1.8, Viltrox AF 85MM 1.8, Samyang MF 14mm 2.8, TTartisan 11mm 2.8 fisheye lens.
      Sony 24-105 is fantastic lens but a bit heavy. The lightest combination for me is my Sony A7 + Samyang 35 f2.8. Less than 500grams together. Samyang 35 2.8 is a brilliant small treasure lens. Underestimated because is not too fast lens. Samyang MF 14mm 2.8 is brilliant for Night sky pictures. Recently I used Minolta Beercan 70-210 f4 and Minolta 500mm reflex f8 and made fantastic pictures of the moon.
      If you want to use another lenses you have to buy more adapters and unfortunately most of old good lenses still keep their price up. Also, if you have Sony A7 III is better to use E mount leces in order to facilitate much improved AF of the camera. I agree that first and second generations Sony A7 and Sony A7R are good for manual focus and now a days would cost you nothing most of the time to buy second hand.

    Thank's for another great video! I have a question: I sold my old a6500 about three years ago and after trying m43 for a while I ended up with an a7 that I've been using for the past year. As you noted in your a7-video, the a7 is lacking quite a bit, so I'm planning to get a new Sony camera. I think the a7 iii is a bit too big and all the R's and S's are too expensive, so it is basically down to a7c. Or perhaps an a6400 or a6600... The a6400 looks tempting, but I really like the look of full frame. BUT when I look at the a7c, I can't help but compare it in size and functionality to the a6600. They look almost identical and the a6600 has a flip-up screen, which I prefer over the flip-out kind. So. Question. How does the a6600 (or a6400) compare to the a7c? Here in Sweden, a6600 is 50% more expensive than a6400 and a7c is 40% more expensive than a6600. But if we take pricing out of the equation - how do they perform? Is there any reason to pick a7c except for the sensor size? How is low light, sharpness, dynamic range, colour etc, etc... Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 года назад +1

      Low light and dynamic range is always going to be better on FF. It's just physics. No amount of tweaking can change it. I have the XT4, and even though the unconventional X-trans sensor architecture has impressive dynamic range, it's not going to be FF level. At least not without compromise. E.g. XT4 can do a dual gain readout with ISO 640 in the shadows and 160 in the highlights for higher dynamic range, but you get noise in the shadows.
      Consider the lens sizes and the type of photography too I guess. Even though FF has better IQ, I probably wouldn't want to carry a 200-600 or 600 f4 up a mountain. If you do any bit of astrophotography, then FF all the way. Or if you need lots of wide-angle, then it's probably easier on FF.

    Hard to justify for replacing an a6000. If Sony wants us a6000 users to upgrade they have to be way better than any current smartphone. Like an A1 in apsc but with computational photography or at least automatic image stacking and night mode equivalent.

    I bought my A7c right after it came it out after having an A6000 for a few years. I'm really happy with my purchase. I like having a full frame interchangeable lens camera with amazing autofocus that's small and relatively stealthy for street photography. I wear glasses and do need the rubber thingie on the viewfinder in order to see anything through it... so I am very hesitant to get the a7c simply based on this. I currently have an aps-c so i am wondering exactly how much worse the viewfinder is on the a7c is in comparison? • @globalforeigner
      @globalforeigner 3 года назад +1

      @@evawettergren7492 I'm not sure what kind of APSC camera you have. The viewfinder on the A6000 has the eyecup and .70x magnification versus no eyecup and .59x magnification on the A7C camera. The A7C has viewfinder has a higher resolution but it feels more uncomfortable to use. I use the A7C viewfinder a lot and I wish it was better, but I've gotten used to it. I think the experience is comparable to using a Sony RX100 series viewfinder, which is not the most enjoyable if you're using it a lot but is still really useful. If the viewfinder is a make or break issue for you but you still want full frame I would not buy the A7C without checking it out first or just skip it entirely and stick with the camera you have or go with a regular A1-9 series camera.

    On a brand new a7c out of the box, the shutter count was already at 18 for me. I think they might test the shutter release at the factory on each unit before boxing. Then your previous owner might have taken a couple of photos and thought “I can’t deal with this evf!” Interesting, I didn’t hate the kit lens. I found it optically quite good and it’s compact size quite well suited to the camera. I’m sure by now you’re already thinking about the 3 new “amigos” compact FE lenses that was just released by Sony (24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G, 50mm f/2.5 G). Those compact lenses could make the a7c even more interesting for travel/street photography.

Works great but sad to have a mechanical issue that is probably expensive to repair.

    Have to say the A7Rii is a sleeper hit. The AF isn't too bad with eye detection and phase points for a good amount of the frame. Video in HD is pretty great in full frame and 4k crop mode is also to a similar level. SLOG2 included. Good IBIS for stills. USB power whilst filming means it doesn't overheat that way. Battery life is the only real use drawback when just using the smaller FW50.
    Image quality is still hard to beat. And price on secondhand market £800-1000.

    I agree with you about the A7, but the A7ii was a vast upgrade on the original. I still have one, and the AF works fine. Focus accuracy seems to have more to do with the lens's ability than the camera. For example, I had a 28-70mm with my A7, which did exhibit questionable Focus accuracy, not only on the A7 but also on an A6000. When I got the A7ii, after jumping ship to Canon for four years, that also came complete with the kit lens, but this copy can't be faulted for focus accuracy on either body 🙂
