    I actually gave my 4K away after a few viewings ... couldn't get over the color changes that were made. Those beautiful warm LA vistas were cooled down so much - didn't feel like the same film to me I grew up with since '91. So jarring. A real shame because I loved the resolution upgrade as well as seeing the 3D presentation in the theatre (looked glorious). Preferred viewing now is the 2015 blu that came out as a promotion before Genesys (which is a slight boost over the Skynet Edition - which I kept for the features).

      I keep all my Terminator Lasediscs, DVDs and Blu-ray’s because each sacrifices something to gain something else. Same with T1 where the first DVD has the mono soundtrack but no HD picture. Even have a rare Japanese LD of T2 with the original print that has no color timing that JC freaked out over and had pulled.

      I mean... You would need an HDR display in order to look proper. I just don't get it how can these 2 be compared.
      Yes you can "color correct" tone map it back to SDR but still it will be lacking due to it being made for HDR and not SDR. I haven't seen the 4k version yet but something tells me that those "washed out" colors are actually the colors that are only seen on HDR WCG displays.

    • @Mymoonization
      @Mymoonization  5 лет назад +9

      For Already at the time, the picture was fantastic, but with the supervision of James Cameron and his director of photography, they reworked everything. Only problem is that there are people who love the image via DNR and others who hate. that one. absolutely.

    • @E101ification
      @E101ification 4 года назад +18

      It's not well done. The differences you're seeing are the result of altering the colour palette and excessive DNR. The colour palette didn't need altering and the colour you're seeing is not _closer_ to the "real life" colour of the scene but actually further away from it.
      As for the DNR to remove the film grain, film grain is part of the original recording, there's no magical way to remove it and get a "clean" version of the visual - DNR is essentially just smudging the image until the grain is so mixed into itself it becomes uniform. Not only are you actually _losing_ detail by doing this but it creates a "waxwork" effect, making people look like wax figures.
      Basically, a few filmmakers like Cameron (who, in case you weren't aware, has totally lost his mind in recent years) think a smooth image is more important than an authentic one, so they DNR the hell out of their releases, sacrificing detail for smoothness which completely negates the point of a 4K resolution, so they do some quite drastic changes to the colour palette to make you think you're getting an "improved" image when you actually aren't.

    I actually like the 4K version but only as a longtime fan who was interested in seeing how the movie might look if it were released today (what with the orange and teal effect and all.) For someone who hasn’t seen it, I would recommend the Blu-Ray as it is closer to the theatrical experience, which I think is important to preserve. Here’s hoping Dark Fate will live up to the legacy of this all time great sequel. Honestly, I wish they included both versions of the film in the 4K release, but I guess James Cameron really wanted us to watch his updated version from now on.

I'm watching the 4k version and it doesn't look washed out at all like it does in this video. Seems to me there's a big elephant in the room no one seems to see when it comes to videos like these that compare HDR and standard dynamic range, kinda like if you watched a 1080p video to see the difference between 4k and bluray

      @@shanelandstrom4469 Ooooh now I get it Lolllll.......ok h
      ere is how I proceed to have the closest image to that found in a 4K Blu-ray. It’s a long process. First, I have to connect via a cable behind a housing that allows me to have the precise source that it will be indicated by metadata. Capable of rendering the images in real time, which exploits the metadata of the calibration station. We call this Content Mapping Unit - CMU) It's like a box that is plugged behind my Oppo 4K blu-ray and my brand new professional Canon DP-V3120 OLED monitor with MTI Film updates Cortex v5.2. Very important. Then you must also have software that allows you to work with different HDR sources. Like Dolby Vision and recently the HDR10+. Also via a metadata file, an XML file, which contains information about the entire program, and it’s this mastering (mapping). In the beginning it was not an easy part. There is another CMU I have, called CMU offline or CMO, which is not dependent on the resolution, but does not work in real time. We can have a 4K rendering in Rec 709 of an HDR PQ element with the metadata, but not in real time. Because RUclips is not able to broadcast HDR native sources. For the moment. Therefore I have to go through a gateway that allows a colorimetry just and faithful to that of Blu-Ray UHD on RUclips. There is another aspect not to be neglected. This is the quantization depth of 12 or 16 bit files and the SMPTE standard for HDR, the Rec 2020, is called 4K of course. Once everything is done, I finish via Final Cut Pro X for the transfer.
      Cheers !

Some people don't realize that natural film grain is actually GOOD and removing it just means removing detail and creating a "waxwork" effect - or, indeed, a videogame effect. FYI, film grain is part of the original recording, there's no magical way to remove it and get a clearer image. When you see film that's had DNR what you're seeing is a version of the film where the image has been "smudged" or "blurred" so that the individual grains become almost the same colour, making them invisible. But doing this also removes detail in the image - completely negating the point of a 4K resolution - and in this case has led to some excessive changes to the colour palette to disguise how unnatural the DNR has made the image look.
