Changing the colour grading of this film is a crime against cinema.
It was not changing, but "correcting" if I remember correctly article about that
Original film already degraded in colors when it was digitised for DVD and for remaster it was corrected according to digital photos from filming
@@Mad_Man_With_A_Boxis that JC’s story? I find it hard to believe the original 35mm had this ugly matrix-esque tint across the whole film
@@mikeg2491 I don't really know, was it origin colors, JC said that they use digital photos as base to correction
@@Mad_Man_With_A_Box JC and his DP confirm the colour grade has been restored to its correct origins in the newer extras on the remastered disc (also in the UHD)
@Mad_Man_With_A_Box lies, they ruining the OG grading we saw in theaters
They ruined the 2017 edition with the DNR and the green tint, Terminator 2 is not the Matrix, its original color palette was always warm tones during the day and bluish tones in night scenes.
There is no edition that convinces me 100%, I think the most redeemable is the Lionsgate 2015, at least without being perfect, it preserves the original grain and colors.
Is Lionsgate 2015 the second option in this video?
@@tylerd8711 For me, of all the versions out there, the Liongate 2015 version would be the best, since it maintains the original film grain, without noise reduction and also preserves the original bluish tint of the film, the original color palette, because with the latest the remastering made a mess, the film looks green tint to the Matrix, without grain, with little detail and very waxy textures.
1080p Blu ray 2017 not to bad
They made it even worse for the future scenes as well. The random color change of the laser in the 2015 version was unnecessary but the two versions after that completely flooding. The screen in a blue filter for the future scenes. Just sucks. I don’t understand how they manage to fuck this movie up so many times when they have the original source that they could easily restore.
@@nickmcfarland73 What they did with the 2017 version was an atrocity, they changed the bluish tones for green, they eliminated the natural grain of the film, with that they caused a very artificial image, without details where everything looks like wax.
The 2000 DVD has the best color lol, the 2017 is just horrid
Exactly. And definition
@@Poraqui Say me your name of your oculist
2015 blows them all out the water
yes, but if we watch that DVD at 42 or 55, I think we don't get that color... maybe I'm wrong
2025 Blu ray looks better than any DVD release.
DVD still holds up way better after all these years
Extreme Edition still looks fantastic!
The 2015 Blu-ray is obviously superior and the definitive version.
@@bradavonIs the 2015 DVD an accurate representation of what the film originally looked like?
2015 is the most accurate to the original for me (having seen it when it was released as a teenager) and had the Special Edition Laserdisc of it too, which was an incredible transfer at the time and blew all my DVDs out of the water - the best Laserdisc. 2015 Blu-ray is the best out of this bunch.
with a pinky faced arnie in the steelmill? dont think so somehow, not natural in the slightest for molten metal glowing away in the background, unless your eyes are miscalibrated
It's so annoying that the 2015 Blu-ray is still an inferior scan (softer in an overall way), but they butchered the 2017 one so badly that nobody wants it anyway.
Yes, the 1015 version looks a little soft in intensity, but the advantage is that it preserves the details and film grain, something that the 2017 version ruined because it eliminated the film grain, causing in turn the loss of detail and definition. the image, resulting in a false image with little detail and where the textures look like wax.
I find standard DVD the best in terms of colour accuracy and picture brightness and contrast etc, even at a lower resolution I find myself preferring them to blu Ray or 4K.
They haven't been messed about with as much.
The DNR and "modern" color grading frenzy are ruining these classics
I'm glad I still have my old Xtreme DVD, the picture quality seems to hold up fine and it has my favorite cover art/label.
Depends on how you view it. All DVDs hold up if that's your baseline but generally next to Blu-ray they suck. Here closely the 2015 Blu-ray is superior.
@@bradavon Blu-ray is usually better, but I still prefer The Matrix snap cover DVD over the Blu-ray. Watch a comparison.
I prefer the 2015 release. Filmic as nature intended! If the 4K actually perfected the 2015 grain and colors, the complaints wouldn't be so prevalent. Also, the 2015 has all versions without changes in quality.
Thanks, 2015 looks just the dvd with better resolution
2015
I'd recommend the 2017 Blu-ray SDR. Yes the palette has changed in some scenes..but it still holds true to the theatrical release
Old man Cameron totally fcuked up the colours.
Give me the whole 2009 Skynet Edition package but lose the DNR so it looks like the 2015 version and boom, the best version of the movie on home video.
The 2015 version color grading still looks closet to the original 2000 DVD imo and has better encoding than previous 2006 & 2009 Blu Ray plus the 2015 I think had director's cut which helps improve the story line from what I've read so I'll pick the 2015 Blu Ray
So does the 2009 Blu Ray that has both cuts being special edition and extended edition
@@WhiteSilverback But it doesn't have the digital corrections they made for the remaster
Any info were this 2015 BR can be bought?
@@dannyjorde2677 "correction" is another term for ruining the OG color grade 😂
@@ILoveTheAllCreator ?
if cameron wanted that look for the new editions... well... ok. but i'll stay with the dvd look.
2000 obviously has by far the best coloring, but man, T2’s camera work has visually held up better than most ‘90s films. The 2017 remaster literally looks like it could’ve been filmed yesterday.
Yeah 2017 version makes look modern better but too much DNR on 4K Ultra HD Blu ray.
I think it's insulting you say T2 "holds up." Holds up my ass, T2 is unquestionably one of the greatest films ever made, period. Certainly in the action genre. Most popular "action" films of the last decade have been trash. John Wick or Generic Superhero Flick # 59 are a joke, an insult to real action movies of the 80s and 90s. The current shit doesn't hold a candle to older stuff. Hold up, my ass.
@@RobertK1993 too much DNR? clearly not watched the skynet edition.....
The DVD looks the best LoL
after watching the 35mm scan a few times , the 2000 DVD and 2015 bluray completely changed the look of the movie. The 2017 blu releases are still off because now they are greenish, while the original theatrical version was very blue in almost every scene.
Extreme Edition 2003 dvd 📀 still looks incredible on a 4k player. On the fence about the 4 k version though I know I will pick it up eventually. Colors are my favourite on the extreme DVD but the clarity on the 4k is nice.
2000 DVD and 2015 BD the colors are better
Picked up the 2017 SDR Blu ray yesterday from a charity shop for £1 looks the best I have ever seen the movie, the DTS HD soundtrack was also amazing. Everyone slated this version I don’t know why all the hate it looks beautiful. Great extras also best £1 I have spent!
2015 Blu ray looking the best ngl
Wax on wax off
😂😂😂😂
Has anyone ever compared these to the VHS? It wouldn't be crazy or the first time the color was just wrong from the dvd on.
How you go from normal colours to the matrix 😂 wtf
2000 have best colors, 2015 is sharpest and 2017 is dark green mess with wax effect caused by DNR. Shame because i really like T2 OG color grading but it looks most of people that are doing these remakes think that filmgrain is worse than every trick that hides it but also butcher image which is DNR and darkness.
TERMINATOR 2: TEAL EDITION 4K TEAL-RAY
😂
U see I like the cleaned and hd version of the 4k. The problem is the tint. They should of used natural colors to remaster it instead of the horrid tint
I own the Canadian bi lingual mongrel media bluray release of T2 from 2014 and it is an improvement in terms of colour and encoding to the earliest blurays and remains true to the original colour timing. I'd say it is the same master if not similar to the 2015 edition.
Which are likely the best we will ever see the film on home format as far as filmic issues are concerned.
The Old SDR much better!!!!
The 2017 SDR Blu-ray is even framed wrong, MY GAWD
Yeah the 4K edition is the best, definitely not a night and day difference by any measure but definitely noticeable if you have watched the blurays as many times as i have
@ethanrom22 lies, that 4k release is arguably the worst realise on film forum 😂😂
DVD can stand by it's own. That's a perfect example when a technology is used properly and intelligent. You can have the latest and being crappy too.
If they had left the film grain in the 2017 remaster, it would have been much better, in my opinion the new color looks better than before.
испортили все. ладно убрали дублера. но цветоккор зеленый жесть
Bro 4K upscaling old movies is like trying to make it look like it came out recently
The film was shot on 35mm which has a native resolution of 4K. The fact that it looks so waxy is because they decided to apply digital noise reduction to remove the film grain which is the detail in the image.
DNR is ruining the film grain
@luckykennedy7364 exactly, film cells of that specs are 4k native. They are ruining these classic with those "modern" color grade approaches
@@luckykennedy7364 Agreed, DNR is the exact opposite of why we buy 4k to begin with, We want to see all the fine detail.
Thank you for this video. The new ones you can't beat the smoothness of the faces, but I love the old color neon ambiance of the old ones, and they changed the lasers from pink to blue... but why
We clearly have to wait for a definitive 4K Blu-ray release. I mean, this movie set the bar for DVD releases. T2 deserves a lot of respect
people dont touch the remaster, they just slag it off, makes me wonder how many have seen the extras from that disc with both JC and his DP talking about the colour tone grade of the movie...... and ironically, its not on youtube, thanks for reading :)
Everything before 2017 has better colour grading and looks like it has the best amount of grain. However, the 2017 version still has some grain on Blu-Ray, so... I guess the bad reception to Terminator 2's 2017 4K version is why it's taking so long for The Terminator to get a 4K release...
Literally walls change color.
Like no one would notice.
The 2017 blu ray looks exactly the same as the 4k version
4к is more greenish and did nothing for the format. Regular 2017 blu is fine, but it could have been better.
i understood changing the first movie. i actually think it looks neat. this here is a war crime
Can't decide which one is better between 2017 Blu-ray and 4k.
Both same
2017. The blue light is better in T2 the blue light effect was meant to be due to not having advanced technology like today. So they would shoot in blue light which the 2017 bluray shows better. But dvd is blurry but has the exact same colors.
The 2015 blu ray!
It's the same transfer just high bitrate encoding on the 4k.
DVD 😊
heavily scrutinized because its the best.
I'm looking at buying the 2015 blu ray, but I'm also looking at a limited edition with a comic style front cover and also the skynet edition
2017 Bluray is definitely the worse.
No
I don’t get the hate for the 4K edition, it’s way sharper and more natural looking. Yes it’s darker but that is usual with HDR older movie scans
I lost interest in the 4K when I learned it doesn't include the much superior Special Edition. The fact it's a mess too is just another reason to avoid it.
2015 finally
Oof I like the 2017 color but realized the issues especially the first shot. I think 2017 looks great for the most part but the in some intances its horrible
Dvd best colors.
The 2017 will hold up best among all so far.
2000 DVD ‼️
Ain't there a 2009. Version ?
2015 wins
For some reason…. I love the way the 4K for T2 looks. I think DNR works for this kind of film.
4k
2015 is the way to go
or if you can get the 2017 fan edit to fix its terrible colour timings then get that!
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - Restored & Regraded [Theatrical & Special Edition] by Kreep
thats the best version
4K is utter trash, they all look like wax dolls
4k bluray looks amazing
You need a seeing eye dog! 😂
@@paulconway384 You do bro! Jordan is right! 4K HDR looks the best
I think they alternate between which is best throughout the film. But the 2017s look TERRIBLE at the beginning. Wtf!
Has anyone watch 4k on an oled ?
That iconic thumbs up shot has been ruined in 2017 versions, if none of the other shots do not drive the message home! What have they done?! Why did they do it?! What unresolved childhood safe space chi-un-centred yoga bollocks of an issue did they have that they would ruin a timeless classic so mercilessly and loveless?! Godless bastards!
Criterion...nay, they are too regal but it would be a damn good blessing if they could... Perhaps Arrow can do proper justice someday soon! James Cameron is similar to that father who doesn't hold his own flesh and blood dear. He needs time off that Avatar realm...bunch of smooth skinned raunchy kinky cat-tailed hissing tall-num-nums prancing around teal-purple meadows and all... He is losing his brilliant eye for detail (or maybe he just needs to check if his glasses have changed power or something). There is always a catch!
4K Arnold looks creepy and fake. I think this is the wax statue syndrome from some a.i. algorithm applied. P.S. Do the lasers actually look blue in the 2017 version, because that's weird and wrong. Everyone knows they should be purple.
Bro you know James Cameron signed off on the 4K edition? It definitely is the best looking but not a night and day difference. 2017 was too bright, the 4K HDR is closer to Cameron’s original version and he digitally fixed the continuity problems
@@ethanrom22so he wanted a green tint over the movie like matrix?
@@thelastofus2872 never said green tint, i said darker look
This makes me sick. LEAVE IT ALONE JAMES.
DVD has the most accurate original colors, close second is the 2015. The other 2 are complete and utter revisionist garbage. Might as well be another movie altogether.
4k garbage dvd is better i dont care what anybody says 4k is trash dvd is better it part of the 1990s-2000s
The 2015 blu-ray comes from the same 1080/24p scan which was done for the 2003 Extreme DVD restoration. That scan, state of the art for the time, is the source used for all pre 2017 HD releases, including the 2009 "Skynet Edition". Though it shows its age, the better AVC compression and removal of DNR the 2015 blu-ray represents the best available rendering of that master. Unfortunately, that is probably the best T2 will ever look on home video.
IMHO, the 2015 Blu-ray is the best one...
Oh, and the 2009 Blu-ray.
The 2000 Ultimate Edition DVD looks very soft like Laserdisc.
The 2017 4K is softer than the Blu-ray and edits such as the rubber knife now solid and Arnold's face videoshopped over the stunt double's...
The DVD version almost certainly was a Laserdisc scan, that was incredibly common in the early day's of DVD.
As for the UHD Blu-ray they really F'ed it up, some of the colour grading choices are nice but others are truly baffling, word of advice to any colour graders out there working on remasters you've alway's got to respect the source material, unless the original cinematographer tells you to then you should be focused on enhancing not changing elements.
And as for the softness, a clear overuse of digital noise reduction in a futile attempt to make it look like a modern movie rather than just accepting that an early 90's film is gonna have visible film grain.
@@MsMarco64k is using "modern color grade", which ruins the OG 90s color grade along with DNR
Muito bom!, Parabéns! Quero ver o do Rambo
I like the look of the 2017 Blu Ray. It looks more modern and appealing to me. Like a film that came out in 2010 or something. Dark parts are dark and not lightened. 7:04 looks great. The bluish tint doesn't bother me at all, maybe that's because I have my TV set up correctly. Most people already tend not to keep the color temperature to D65 white point, which makes the picture look even bluer. Try setting your picture to Warm 2 or at least Warm 1.
The 2015 version really does look like an 90s film, you can tell immediately by the lighting. So I think they did a good job editing the image.
Two different styles, but I prefer the newer version -> personal taste ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I agree
