I rarely ever watch any live videos but when it comes to Mr. Darnielle I feel I won't be complete til I see every video performance of this man... He is definitely one of the best musicians/song writers alive.
It's such a nice feeling to find one like that. Where it's like "oh okay yeah, awesome. I get to listen to this song so many times that it becomes inextricably woven into the very fabric of my soul. This song is about to go from a cool song I like even though I've only heard it a few times to being literally a part of who I am." Songs are COOL.
Hit the replay button about 20 times and it'll probly end up being 80 by tonight. I might just listen to this song for the rest of my life now that i think about it...
This was on of my first Mountain goats videos. Def one of my favorites still. One thing I learned a while ago, stop trying to convince non believers. They'll come around on their own, or they won't. We all know the magic therein.
love love love it. thank you so much for posting this. always makes me feel warm & good inside. please leave it up forever, until the hills are flattened, and the rivers all run dry.
Shit yes. It's fantastic. Hair style/length has a BIG influence on whether I find someone attractive or not. John isn't my type (which is nothing about him, it's about me). But in this video, with that floppy dark hair? Yes please. Ugh. I feel like I'm objectifying him... probably because I am! I really respect him as an artist and a person (which makes the objectification feel extra squicky). His work is amazing, and he came from an incredibly shitty beginning yet turned into an extremely kind and thoughtful person. That's a big part of why I'm a fan of The Mountain Goats. I have a decent amount of respect and admiration towards JD himself... Not to say I worship him or put him on a pedestal (and I'm only clarifying this because some of the fans I've encountered talk about him like he's some sort of god. I find it unnerving... He has his flaws, like anyone else. He's human). Ok, I'm stopping before I embarrass myself further.
it's amazing. there's nothing groundbreaking or even all that special about his band. he's not some stupid pretty boy making music, he's not blending different styles, he doesn't even have a spectacular voice (but it is good, still) but still you can tell he feels every chord he plays, and his lyrics are unpredictable and true. his music is more an experience of captured feeling than just a song.
the man is a true artist. he feels and shows every single emotion that inspired him to write his songs and holds them just as freshly in his mind everytime he sings them.
The garter snake passed lazily through the tall yellow-headed sourgrass There was cold, clear water in a tall, clean glass The sunlight hit the sides and it came through the water tilted I saw the condensation on your hand I could feel the glaciers melting And a warm, soft wind Covered up everything On the day your love came screaming through me You had oranges and lemons in a canvas bag beside you And seven different kinds of light welling up inside of you You smeared citrus pulp all over me, it felt okay Good old East Rutherford three thousand miles away I felt the warm surge blast my mind Coming in from behind On the day your love came screaming through me In the fresh light of day I felt something falling away On the day your love came screaming through me
Still one of my favorite of his older performances. I love the smile that breaks through periodically. Someone brought up JD's "weird facial contortions" here in the comments over a decade ago. I can't disagree with their observation, and yet, I feel compelled to note: throughout my 40yrs I've seen _a lot_ of singer/songwriters who contort their face in a manner that makes my skin crawl... John Mayer, for example... but JD's contortions have never made me uncomfortable. They're endearing at best, and genuinely amusing otherwise.
feel so, so bad that i downloaded this song for now, so i just put here my promise that someday i buy the complete album on cd, on itunes on lp, just on everthing thats possible, please forgive me, such a great song...
His facial expression reveals the irony in a lot of his music, coupled with his anger. The performance of No Children he smiles a great big smile when he says 'I hope you die, I hope we both die.' for example. Watching him perform actually has redefined how I listen to not just his music, but a lot of music.
THANK YOU I also think it's damn offensive of @allhailkingarthur to imply that Darnielle is solely a lyricist; his melodies aren't complicated, but that's the point, they're purposefully and elegantly simple. Songs like the Diaz Brothers, This Year, and basically the entire album The Life of the World To Come prove that Darnielle is a superb music writer. His mindblowing lyrics are complemented by whatever the hell notes he wants, they're always excellent, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
bookemist Exactly. It doesn't have to be complicated to be great. Now that I'm old. It's the short simple songs that I love the most. If you don't like The Mountain goats you just haven't heard the right song yet
I agree 110%. I saw john on the gone primitive tour, just amazing. This is actually one of the first TMG songs I learned on guitar. very fun using the high vocals as in this live version.
he actually does put together plenty of memorable, iconic, stuck-in-your-head melodies. if you listened to more MG songs (i know there's a lot!) you would find that out for yourself and not be content to miss out on greatness.
Exactly, love'em both. Also, this is probably the happiest song I've heard by him, but it's still kind of sad :( Excluding This Year and Sax Rohmer #1.
Indeed. He was a poet first, actually, since The Mountain Goats started after he bought a cheap guitar and sang poems he had already written (when he had planned to be a "professional" poet) over the few chords he knew. Good stuff.
something about John's lyrics make want to crawl up into his mouth, slide down his throat and swallow the words whole before they're out and already replaced with more words I want to catch and hold just as much... anyone else get what I'm saying?
I'm pretty certain mountain goats videos have the highest ratio of total views/total people who've watched them. I know I must have watched this at least a hundred times. Last 30 seconds are insane.
Does anyone know if there were more songs preformed for AOL? I seem to remember him doing Going to Georgia but I can't find it for the life of me. I'm not sure if it exists or not, this was a decade ago I might have seen it. I see the NPR version, but that's not what I'm looking for.
I have seen the interviews where John describes the distance he has with the characters in his songs (ST was the first autobiographical album). However, I believe those quotes only apply to the songwriting process. I think one would be hard pressed to claim that he performs them with no emotion. One of the best things about tMG is that John doesn't hold anything back, he gets into character and kills it. Sure John might not have an emotional connection, but the characters themselves sure do.
@Warman115 There is a Mountain Goats website and part of the website is dedicated to guitar tabs - just google it and it'll come up. It's comprehensive and fantastic.
@LittleBlackSparrow Agreed :) God is just breath taking. I dont understand how sometimes we can be so selfish and think that anything other than him would deserve our praise, time, and love. I
probably not but if you're concerned about not stealing from john, why not go purchase a song he has available and download this one from youtube? that way you'll at least be giving him something ^u^
YOU SMEARED YOUR CITRUS PULP ALL OVER ME. IT FELT OK.
I rarely ever watch any live videos but when it comes to Mr. Darnielle I feel I won't be complete til I see every video performance of this man... He is definitely one of the best musicians/song writers alive.
Nico Poulos
he's probably the best songwriter ever. have a good one
this is it. this is the next song i'm going to listen to for the rest of my life.
You still listening bub?
It's such a nice feeling to find one like that. Where it's like "oh okay yeah, awesome. I get to listen to this song so many times that it becomes inextricably woven into the very fabric of my soul. This song is about to go from a cool song I like even though I've only heard it a few times to being literally a part of who I am."
Songs are COOL.
In the words of John Green, "The Best Ever Death Metal Band out of Denton is the kind of song that literally saves lives."
Possibly the best song as a Mountain Goats fan to find. Love John
Hit the replay button about 20 times and it'll probly end up being 80 by tonight. I might just listen to this song for the rest of my life now that i think about it...
Michael E Heard it my first time and did just that!
This was on of my first Mountain goats videos. Def one of my favorites still.
One thing I learned a while ago, stop trying to convince non believers. They'll come around on their own, or they won't. We all know the magic therein.

Harry Potter has nothing on John darnielle
The greatest poet/songwriter of my 55 years
love love love it. thank you so much for posting this. always makes me feel warm & good inside. please leave it up forever, until the hills are flattened, and the rivers all run dry.
One of those videos that I will always come back to.
Oh-ho, dear reader. Back again.
🎉
😌
i have been listening to his album: the sunset tree, for like two months straight and i still can't get enough.
His floppy hair got me
Shit yes. It's fantastic.

I have been a Mountain Goats fan for years and this is the most raw and real song. I love it

Only way to listen to the mountain goats : headphones, whiskey and some smokes.
2007…
A vintage year
feel so, so bad that i downloaded this song for now, so i just put here my promise that someday i buy the complete album on cd, on itunes on lp, just on everthing thats possible, please forgive me, such a great song...
He... has the most amazing voice, I'm speechless.
used to watch this all the time like 8 years ago crazy seeing it say 16 years old
when i first heard him sing, it was like i never wanted to hear anything else again.
I cannot rate this highly enough. Breathtaking.
One of the most talented songwriters of our era. I don't think I'll ever get tired of the Darnielle. Mega-boosh!
Awesome song! Great lyrics, and lots of emotion
Watching him perform is so emotional for me
My phone's cracked so i thought you legit called him "Jim" and then i almost accidentally reported your comment.
Oh the joys of tMG.
I. Only. Listen. To. TMG
I worship this musician.
Now that is passion.
His facial expression reveals the irony in a lot of his music, coupled with his anger. The performance of No Children he smiles a great big smile when he says 'I hope you die, I hope we both die.' for example. Watching him perform actually has redefined how I listen to not just his music, but a lot of music.
He has some pretty funny facial contortions, but it's just because he's so good at quickly articulating the lyrics.
Darnielle is awesome.
THANK YOU

There are 909 likes....... couldn't be more perfect.
I can't wait to see them live ^__^

i wish one of these days that i could walk up to somebody who knew who john darnielle so that we can jam out to him ALL DAY!!
i think this is my favorite song ever
awesome. one of the best vocalist comments ever
Love that hypernasal voice.
Okay. I am officially in love with The Mountain Goats. I haven't heard a song of theirs yet that I didn't like,
A real musician.
Super Hans
John is
it's good to see John playing some of his old stuff.
He is a songwriter and a GOOD one...
Nich Silbeenagel

It’s too good.
wow. his lyrics really amazing
Amazing!!!
Yes. That's how I found out 'bout him. Seeing Aesop for first time next month in San Diego. STOKED.
touching song, its gotten me through alot
Exactly, love'em both.
Also, this is probably the happiest song I've heard by him, but it's still kind of sad :(
Excluding This Year and Sax Rohmer #1.

this video makes me so happy
brilliant!
i fucking love this man
. . . is awesome! He knows what he's doing, and sometimes I do too. It sounds like what you're telling me is you don't.
When we were young...
very cool. good that I found you.
Seven different kinds of light welling up inside of you :’)

SO GOOD
I'm pretty certain mountain goats videos have the highest ratio of total views/total people who've watched them. I know I must have watched this at least a hundred times. Last 30 seconds are insane.
i'm pretty sure this was the first video i ever watched on youtube
My first "liked" video. Revisiting 14 years later...
@mostenan he's just too amazing. and hes so adorable in concert :P
What a feeling
I have a man crush on this man. He is wonderful
He and Bob Dylan have unique-sounding voices, but they can certainly sing. Everything strange about their singing is just style.
@mostenan its just amazing how he has the ability to connect with his audience. no matter what age.
he's so good
I love how people have educated conversations on Mountain Goats videos instead of: You're a poopy head.
\
Why not both? Poopy head.
"... and it does not matter in the slightest because people are not TV."
*clap* *clap* *clap*
Yes.....yes I quite do agree.
Song for a Young John
Does anyone know if there were more songs preformed for AOL? I seem to remember him doing Going to Georgia but I can't find it for the life of me. I'm not sure if it exists or not, this was a decade ago I might have seen it. I see the NPR version, but that's not what I'm looking for.
the other two songs he performed this session are uploaded too if you look under my videos.
As a UNC-CH Alum, I'm digging that State shirt
@LittleBlackSparrow Girls named Cathy, scotch, videogames, fast cars, borderline self-destruction. All of these things.

It makes for great songs
epic genious
This is so much better than the album version. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
I have seen the interviews where John describes the distance he has with the characters in his songs (ST was the first autobiographical album). @JackKrausGuitar I have heard it was an ovation.
If it is, its not a model still in production.
I sang this song to my baby girl the first time we met..
for sure
wow. i have 4 or 5 live versions of this song and this one is better than all of them.
@Warman115 There is a Mountain Goats website and part of the website is dedicated to guitar tabs - just google it and it'll come up. It's comprehensive and fantastic.

Brooks was here. So was Red.
heehee. too true.
damn!
@bananas1and2 I haven't heard a song by them I didn't like either. They're awesome. :)
me too :)
is there any legal way to get this version of this song?
probably not but if you're concerned about not stealing from john, why not go purchase a song he has available and download this one from youtube? that way you'll at least be giving him something ^u^
