No one's ever going to say, "I remember when these guys used to be..." Darnielle and his co-conspirators just continually make fantastic, folky, heart-felt music, and his fans are some of the nicest people I've ever met.
I saw him open for Lftr Pllr (who became The Hold Steady) and as he started I was like THIS SUCKS and before the 40 mins were over I was like I LOVE YOU!
@@DerBieso1I had a similar experience. I went to a tMG concert in 1994 and at first was thinking WTF is this? Afterwards I could not get the rhythms out of my head, which started a quest to try to find their music at record shops, something that was impossibly difficult back then ❤
idk why but I love the moment at 1:16 when he sings ‘c-c-come on in’ in this version, I genuinely miss it when I listen to the official recording of the song
I cannot properly articulate how wonderful it is that John Darnielle and his music exists. He just, fucking gets it, man. THANKS FOR BEING HERE, BUDDY. I LOVE YOU (in a non creepy, non threatening, I-hope-you-are-sleeping-well-and-getting-your-vitamins, totally familial sort of way.) 🤘🤓🖤🐐🖤 #TNGForever
His intro for the song is kind of funny. Takes a good 5 seconds to find the words to describe what the song is about, but only takes .25 second to break into song without missing a beat. Practice.
I am by far no singing professional but I remember in grade school, somewhere between grade 1-5 my choir teacher would say when your singing to end the s's really quick because otherwise it makes a "sss" sound that whistles and I love how John Darnielle just embraces the s haha. I love this song
I love when he explains a song in just a sentence or two, and the explanation is so open ended and yet so accurate that it invites a whole conversation about all the things the song is for.
the mountain goats have such a presence live. a magical raw feeling that can only be captured when live and thus elevates over many other bands who do not sound as good live.
If you try to sing along it's really hard because the emphasis is on the first 1/2 beat not on the first beat, so the "s"s give you a good rythmic crutch
I love how he couldn't remember then just started really suddenly , a lot of artists do that live , out of awkwardness . when they're playing is when they don't feel awkward, so they just go to that real quick :)
When first hearing this song, I felt it.. like deeply. I have been to rehab and i believe this song is about rehab. The community in there is so tight and welcoming. It changed my life to go there. 3 years sober! Thank you for this beautiful song. ✌️
I got the yellow expanded edition vinyl for my birthday last year. I LOVE the way it sounds on vinyl. Unmatched. The Panasonic breaking and realing (especially during Blues in Dallas) is so perfect. It becomes it's own instrument on vinyl. I highly recommened getting your hands on one.
The first time hearing this song, I thought it was about drinking alcohol. But I think it's actually about a rehab or shelter for starving people. As always, a beautiful performance. Someone tell me how to get John to do this at my house! =)
how can people not think this music is incredible!?!? all my friends find pop music inspiring and amazing, no, you have not heard this genre of excellence my friend
@Hl212345 this sounds OK playing along with John: Verses: C#m G# A B / E G# A B Chorus: A B E A / E A E A B (Except for the first and last A's, all of the chorus chords are on the 7th fret. The E's are like x799xxx - he's mostly just hitting the bass strings - and the A's that follow them are like x7799x, keep the barre but move the other fingers up one string.) Bridge: C#m G# A B (3x) / E B The end is the bridge followed by E (1 bar) E (1 strum).
when it comes to music, it's always what people WANT it to mean. You want to judge, you say it's about something dumb. if you want it to be stupid, then it has no meaning. But for this song I feel like its about what people needed to be. When I first heard it it was a warm song about complete strangers in a bar, alone, wary, and troubled. But They're just together, not worrying about whats going on in their lives, if only for a few hours. to me it's the ballad of rag tag misfits.
Yep, it's tough but there still are some DAMN GOOD bands nowadays! Just have to look past the terrible popular music of today to see the diamonds in the rough!;) The Mountain Goats are one of the best! Thanks sister!!!8-D
I remember when john used to sit on a stool and sing his heart out; the last few shows i've been to, he stood up and danced around and told silly stories. I miss the old days!
Its all barre chords It goes C#m (same position as u would do for Bm but two frets up), G# (same as F#, but two frets up), A major (played like G# but one fret up), B major (Two frets above A), then E major Played like a B major barre chord would NORMALLY be played, but with the barre on the 7th fret. And then i think it goes back to G# then A, then B and the chorus is just A, E and B at the end. Most tabs out there have the right chords, but you have to find the version of the chord that is a barre chord
'Drugs addicts' say the song about drugs because it is about drugs. Why people who believe it is not about drugs think that their belief somehow makes that true - an obvious, flawed tautology - is a bit harder to understand. One 'drugs addict' in particular, the writer of the song, says that the song is about drugs. But it's about other things too - the real world is never that simple - like meeting new people & offering them hospitality, friendship, & front-row seats to all of your problems.
What you described as an "obvious, flawed tautology"--that belief based on opinion is fact--is not a tautology. Additionally, "flawed tautology" is, itself, a tautology. I agree with your assertion, though. Sorry, just had to.
Actually, it's from a old cheap vodka I used to drink. I found it unbelievably funny that a vodka that makes Skoal seem like Grey Goose was named "Aristocrat". Whenever I got pissed on it, I would refer to myself as the aristocrat. Though my penchant for filthy humor is certainly a cherished characteristic, so good guess.
So, I really thought this song was about refugees, and the fight to keep them here and welcome and fed and taken care of. Apparently, it was originally about meth 🧐

wow! 13 years later and they are on tour right now after releasing a great album!
I saw him open for Lftr Pllr (who became The Hold Steady) and as he started I was like THIS SUCKS and before the 40 mins were over I was like I LOVE YOU!

IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL RIGHT?
omg I glad Im not the only one
This and "graceful presence!" I totally miss it on the recording
Am I the only one that loves the stutter part? It makes this my favorite version.
this song never fails to make me feel so safe, so accepted. his writing and chord work is so amazing.
this song is always what i listen to when i need some acceptance
It makes me feel welcome and it makes me happy 🤘💫🤘

Fuck yeah
this may actually be my favorite mountain goats song
I always feel sad listening to this lovely, affectionate song that we don’t treat refugees this way. They need it the most.
Shout out from Zimbabwe! wish there were more fans here so you would come on tour lol..
Forever my favorite version of Color In Your Cheeks.
His tiny stutter @1:14 makes it my favorite version because it didn't seem intentional but it worked perfectly.
"This is a song about making new friends."
😎
I know he says that but I think it's about so much more. About being a good person. Being a good community
I love when he explains a song in just a sentence or two, and the explanation is so open ended and yet so accurate that it invites a whole conversation about all the things the song is for.
Its a song about finding your people, just because you come from a broken home doesnt mean your a broken person.
If i ever hit it big im gonna build a place like this
The audio of this video is higher quality than the album's lol

Hi Rose. Nice moustache.
John makes those bar chords look so effortless!
bar chords require little effort to execute...
After a while of playing, yes
Hey man, I know you posted this 2 years ago but I hope you got better at barre chords!
Bar chords are tricky for a while, it's not as easy as it looks.
They are. He’s a professional musician.
This is my favorite video on RUclips
i have watched this video at least five times today.
After seeing this guy live almost a decade ago, every time I hear his voice it reminds me true singers don't need microphones.
I love how he couldn't remember then just started really suddenly , a lot of artists do that live , out of awkwardness . when they're playing is when they don't feel awkward, so they just go to that real quick :)

this is the best preformance i've ever seen.. by anyone
One of my favorite songs of his, and that's saying a lot.
it was the least that we could do, to make our welcome clear.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The first time hearing this song, I thought it was about drinking alcohol. But I think it's actually about a rehab or shelter for starving people. As always, a beautiful performance. Someone tell me how to get John to do this at my house! =)
I've been to rehab (3 years sober!) and I really felt this song deep. I believe it is about rehab.
@@kellyjodesigns it’s about tweakers.
Love the way he sings the third verse. Best version of this song
This song is.. is.. lovely.
This song reminds me of couch surfing. :)
This song changed my life. One my all time favorites.
Best version. C-c-c'mon in.
LOVE his Rainsong guitar, beautiful instrument in good hands.
shout out to all my diaspora bohemian freind's from zim! Thank you for the warm welcome during my time abroad over there!
how can people not think this music is incredible!?!? all my friends find pop music inspiring and amazing, no, you have not heard this genre of excellence my friend
sad that this isn't as popular
awesome writer/performer! please come n play in north england again!!!
This is eternally the superlative version and recording of Color in Your Cheeks.
I think this version is better than the original; much more descriptive and emotional. I'm glad it was reuploaded on it's own
@Hl212345 this sounds OK playing along with John:
Verses:
C#m G# A B / E G# A B

Bridge:

this is my absolute favorite song. i'm glad it exists.

My fav song ever
"... this is an old song, but I remember when it was not"
Perhaps it's about whatever stage of life you're in.. as he says it's about making friends and I feel in whatever the dire circumstance.
Never stop singing man I fucking love this music
I love that his voice sounds the same live or on the records!
My favorite song by the mountain goats
Yep, it's tough but there still are some DAMN GOOD bands nowadays! Just have to look past the terrible popular music of today to see the diamonds in the rough!;) The Mountain Goats are one of the best! Thanks sister!!!8-D

I love this song btw this is friends account.
This song is about me.
Fidelity like a mo-fo.
0 dislikes? as it rightfully should be.
Holy shit!! Learning to play this is so much easier using power chords.
QuietGuitaristfan do you possibly have a tab? i’ve been trying to learn it but nothing sounds right
I wonder what I'd have to do get them to play at a local festival
Pay them enough
I wish I could find wherever he is singing about.
Whomst be listening in Throne of Eldraine standard format?
i think this is from All Hail West Texas, right?
Yes.
It's usually the case with good bands
Heh, just made tea. So true.
Anyone know what chord John is playing at 1:14 ? Right after the E. Thanks very much in advance.
Looks like a B.
It's an inverted power chord. While it looks like a B, it's an A, second inversion. so, from the E string, 7799xxx
+Spencer Williamson sweet
thanks
How the fuck could you dislike this?
thank you for bringing that up, the iowa trance remix is great

Live version or original? Hard choice ;)
Does anyone know the chords he is playing here? I haven’t been able to find a reliable tab and it just sounds lovely in this video
Its all barre chords

Ha. He changed the end from the album version. Now I don't feel so bad for always screwing that part up.

taipei's not particularly sunny
Can someone please send me the chords to the version he's playing??

not the correct version
C # minor, a flat, b and e

Sorry ahead of time if I drink all your whiskey and scare all the girls away. Heheh.
is this slightly sped up or is that just me?

Is this about his wife?
Sounds the exact same as 1994 or whatever the fcking year was.
But with higher fidelity.
comments suck. music good.
the 4 dislikes have to be ironic.....or moronic, i guess
Yes because if you're going to be obtuse you'd want to do it redundantly.
Now you're just talking linguistic semantics.
Now you're just being anti-semantic.
