Conor Oberst - Lua (with First Aid Kit & Dawes) - CARDINAL SESSIONS (Haldern Pop Special)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 авг 2014
- Conor Oberst is back with a new solo record "Upside Down Mountain", but at Haldern Pop Festival he performed a very special version of the old Bright Eyes song "Lua" with his friends First Aid Kit and Taylor from Dawes. In 2008, he's been named the best songwriter of the year by Rolling Stone Magazine. He also helped building a huge folk music scene in his hometown Omaha, Nebraska and has been a favourite of us for a long time.

In August of 2014, we've been in the lovely little town Haldern that hosts a festival since 1984. We recorded a festival special. Make sure to check all the other bands out.

Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.

The best line in a song with so many good lines.😊
@@emmamcdonald1611A song absolutely packed with good lines! IMO, he is a lyrical genius 💡
I wonder how Klara must feel singing with Conor Oberst when he was her inspiration and said he changed the way she saw music and life forever back when she was 12. That's crazy
itsthegoofy I as well recently had the privilege of befriending and jamming/writing music with one of my biggest inspirations and I can tell you from experience it's the coolest thing ever a very awesome and surreal feeling
itsthegoofy - her face says it all as the song begins. So great.

A lifetime event!
I used to listen to this song when I was broke and thought my life was going to end up being brief and end in poverty. It didn't, thankfully, but this song still makes me wistful for a time when I had no obligations and could just sort of "be".
I feel this now, I am not by any means at that point anymore but I get an urge to fall back to the lack of obligation and just be.
Hey friend, i hope you see this, im at the end of my rope. Life isnt looking good for me. But music is too good, and sunsets are so pretty, i cant miss it can i?
Being in your late teens and 20’s. When it was easier to be poor. Feel you.
@@kevingarduno8365no lovely, you can’t not be here to hear this. We need people who feel to really understand and care for what are now our historical songs. Also those sunsets can’t see themselves. They are always different at different places. X
Thank god for the internet! Imagine all the music you would never hear. So many talent and wonderful singers and groups.
I really appreciate what the Taylor from Dawes playing lead added to the song. A slack, kinda jazzy kinda gypsy vibe. So neat to hear. Truly love that he didn't just go for something expected. Combine that with the beautiful and haunting harmonies from First Aid Kit and boom, this was not just another performance of Lua, but a completely unique version. Awesome.
Let's be real... First Aid Kit and those beautiful harmonies completely steal the show!
I LOVE FIrst Aid Kit aaaaand Bright Eyes what a great combo
Made Upside Down Mountain so great
I have a dram !
the lead guitarist is amazing! even Conor looks at him like. damn I wish I could do that, lol
It's nothing short of a cardinal sin to be talking while this song is being played by such talent.
I said the same thing to myself!
Quite possibly the greatest live song I've ever heard!
Mike yazz agree. :)
You need to listen to jarrod gorbel

Listen to first aid kit emmylou at paste ruins. That is the best live song.
7 years later I’m back and this song still hits me in the deepest part of my soul! ❤
If the sun burned out while Conor was still around I think we would be alright as long as he could still smile.
How we could expect anyone to be

Holy shit balls, goosebumps stuff. What an awesome combination of artists. Make an album!!!
I've honestly never had a song that wasn't at a funeral make me feel this... feely. I mean, damn. I'm glad I discovered this easier-style music. All that heavy shit is great, and I don't love it any less than before I discovered Bright Eyes and others, but having a contrast is really important to me right now.
It's Slipknot and such for the battles and Bright Eyes and such to heal my wounds in the aftermath I guess. I wouldn't have it any other way.
BoxedTurtle me too buddy
Well fuckin' said! Since for once in my life, I had no words to describe how I felt when I heard this...and I'm a metalhead.

Two of my favorite artists?! Singing one of my favorite songs?! How am I finding this NOW?!?! It’s so beautiful, what a collaboration.
I know!!😭😭 Exactly how I’m feeling. And the fact that Conor was Klara’s inspiration when she was a kid🥺 like. Words I don’t have. Perfection
Just fell over this bit of magic tonight... 💙💙💙
By far the best live song I have ever come across!
This was a great album.. Also, as a recovering addict I feel this one real hard.

Hope you two are doing well. Stay strong!
Discovering this during Covid 2020, love bright eyes and have for years but never seen this
Towards the end when you can hear Taylor at the end of every line and everybody is in harmony is the besssst.
This has always been one of my favorites I love the harmonizing I am balling I love Conor so much his songs always speak to me
Been a fan of Conner for a long time. Just discovered First Aid Kit on accident last week and man.
.. they have immediately become one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. Absolutely in love with them and their music.
Wow... My heart dropped. Made me tear up. I love the original, and this is just as beautiful. Both versions have their own beauty and always seem to bring tears to my eyes. Hits close to home.
*Ben Harper.
had to do a double take lol
That's what I LOVE about Conor, his voice is just so beautifully depressing it always makes me feel emotional, and First Aid Kit have beautiful voices too. They just sound AMAZING together!!! xxx
This production is a beautiful tapestry of an old heart warming song with beautiful metaphors and meaningful words of all kinds of wisdom With sweetheart love in kind and kin. She must have have been special and I think you need to suffer in many, many ways...especially in true love
I have listened to this song for at least 50 times... and still like it.
This actually is a master class lesson in how to collaborate with other artists. Nobody detracts too much attention away from the song but this is RADICALLY different from the studio version. First Aid Kit is like an homage to Maria Taylor and Jenny Lewis from the previous albums, and coming off of upside down mountain the lead guitar brings me back to the sound of that album while blending seamlessly
This is the best song ever and what a wonderful group of people to add to Conor's lovely voice!
Yeah this pretty much blows me away, Taylor's guitar is so subtle but so beautiful, Conor is Conor...Brilliant as usual and the girls from first aid kit are as stunning as there voices.
What an honor to sing this song with him
imagine having THAT much talent in such a small space
I cannot seem to find a word to decribe how i feel when im listening to this amazing performance .
In 2005 I came home late at night, switched the TV on, MTV was on, and I saw a young guy sitting on the curb playing guitar and singing so purely and vulnerably. Caught me immediately. Now, more than 16 years later, Bright Eyes and Conor still are favorites of mine and I still love listening and singing to their songs.
And I love First Aid Kit so much, too.
In my 20s it was Conor, in my 30s it's First Aid Kit.
What an absolute pleasure it was to listen to this performance during a rainy drive.
I'll juat keep coming back to this video and song. This is my tranquility base :/ the place where I can feel I am me.
one of my favorite bright eyes songs, great version
Wow. This takes me back. I remember being 18 and seeing Bright Eyes at a small club in Nashville. Things between my highschool "soul mate" and I had just ended dramatically and I knew he would be there too. I smoked a lot of pot before going in. I stood at one end of the stage with my sister and best friend and he stood at the other end with one of his friends. It was a personal, intense show. Back when Conor was still mumbling and staring at the floor. Playing drawn out improvisations. The melancholic music and poetic lyrics which my lost love and I used to spend hours listening to together swirled around us, amplifying the tension between us. I'd catch glimpses of his long blond hair out of the corner of my eye even though I tried not to look his way. At the end of the show he walked over to me and silently placed a stack of folded papers in my hand and then walked away. It was a short story he'd written. This was 18 years ago.
yo what was the story about?
@@Jayisafunkydude I vaugely remember it. It was about an older man. Who chain smoked and was happy in his misery. Imagine a character in a Bukowski book played by Steve Buscime. That kind of guy. Having fleeting memories of his youth and of his mother. There was a paragraph full of descriptive imagery of a summer lawn mowing session. The character shoots himself in the end. It was type written.
@@light_and_sound wow, that sounds pretty heavy.
@@light_and_sound They weren’t “drawn out improvisations.” Rather, they were very practiced and developed. The first time I saw Conor was in 2000 in the basement of Sokol Hall here in Omaha, though I had friends who were in bands at the time, and they started seeing him around 1993 and 1994, and they say his stuff was Never improvised, and that’s when Conor was 13 or 14. Conor was known, even way back in ‘93, as someone who never improvised. By the time he went on stage, the songs were well-worn and well-practiced, especially 10 years after 1993, when you saw him.
@@wildmercuryfilms Ok. Sounded like improvisations to me at the time. They weren't studio/album versions. I guess we'd have to travel back in time and ask him at the show to really know for sure.
This song...
this particular version...
makes me fall in love all over again...
I love how the audience chatter disappears somewhere near the middle of the song, such a captivating performance!
This is the best version of this song,
just tingles the whole way through, my two favourite artists making poetry
Songs like this are the reason I LOVE music!!!
One of the best videos on YT
I liked this song so much so I translated the lyrics in romanian (and it rhymes in romanian, too). I would like very much to add captions to this video, but I don't know how to do it so I ask the administrator of this channel to do it (of course, after he will consult a romanian friend to make sure is OK how I translated it).
N-o s-o fac
Medicamentul ne omoară dar și durerea
S-a oprit
Niciodată nu-i
Sub raza lunii era simplu, acum, în zori e
Complicat
Sub raza lunii era simplu, acum e totul încurcat
Everything first aid kit does is just MAGIC.
Nobody writes lyrics like this guy
Do yourself a favour and listen to Tony sly if you wanna hear amazing lyrics.
@@jenlarocque4117we'll stick with conor, thanks
Such an amazing song! Never gets old.
This song is sad and beautiful ❤
Possibly the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen ❤
Makes me want to feel all of life again
On a sad Sunday morning, my spirit soared upon discovering this tune.
So beautiful... incredible musicianship
Goosebumps. Best version of a great song imo
unbelievably beautiful combination of talent and grace
God I love Conor Oberst, true lyricist
only just seen this. didn't think he could improve on something already so brilliant.
What a sad and haunting song. Beautifully performed. Thank you.
so chillled and beautiful way to go guys!.
I love this so much. Conor and Klara and Johanna make angels envious.
I feel like this video must represent what it's like to hang out with Conor Oberst. Spontaneous performances all the time. They all seem like a real chill hang.
This is a very special version of one of my favored songs by conor/bright eyes. Great tune.
If I may:
Still one of my favorite recordings, nay: THE BEST of LUA so far.
it's like a child's little lulluby, just a bit darker :) nice version of the song, though.
First Aid Kit can do no wrong!
I gotta say I was late on the Connor/BE band wagon always like that kind of music and knew who he was but never really listened to him till recently but I’m happy I did everything I have heard had been amazing a truly amazing song writer trying to catch up on all there albums now but keep going back to this album and lifted because those albums are so amazing I like put them on every time I’m in my car
Beautiful! I don't have other words.
Words don’t do this justice. I’m just so sad I only discovered it now I’ve loved them all for years😭😭❤️❤️❤️
One of the best live performances per RUclips.
This is so beautiful, it almost made me cry
this is my favorite video on the internet...
This is the first song i could ever sing and play guitar too. Thanks Conor:)
how does this not have a billion views? i love these gals
I've been on a Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits spree for the past year. This is as good as what they do.

That’s an eclectic group. LC TW and Conor Oberst.
Do yourself a favor and check in on Townes Van Zandt and early John Prine
@@inluvwdacoco yup, every bit as good as cohen, prine, waits, simon, dylan.
6:03 these harmonies are soooooo beautiful
I love Conor/Bright Eyes and First Aid Kid respectively, but I'm not sure I loved them together on this song. Something about Lua is just so lonely. Having extra voices for me kind of takes away from that loneliness, if you know what I mean? That being said, the harmonies and guitar playing were both beautiful.
Charlie Hutchinson I agree there is probably better songs they could have picked. And I wouldn't be mad if they did Many more of these
HEre's a live recording of a concert they did together in case you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/0kezhfKXUZg/видео.html
this version is so incredibly beautiful because of the shared sadness in the voices.

I have always loved this song, but this version is best.
I knew and loved FAK in 2014 (and well before). It would be three years later before I ever knew of Dawes. So thankful to know of them both now..This combo is amazing💘
did someone say goosebumps? oohh my god this just moves hearts. awesome
Taylor Goldsmith makes this song for me. That guitar sounds soooo good in there.
audience stunned at the end
Thanks for sharing this masterpiece of a session with the world. Can't believe it took nearly 4 years for me to find it, but it's the result that matters. Deeply touched by this interpretation.
Really impress with the feel that Dawes is able to bring to the song. Very good, kudos.
I love this song. Is a perfect match their voices. Makes me feel love and the love of the one i love. It might not exist by the morning, but i have it with me during we have supplies. Love him i wish he could really love me back
this version is so lovely
So beautiful!

Spectacular.
Pure Heaven to the Ears!!!
the dream team!!!
wWe 29 29th99 I Love, 96932 I, Too, But
Wow I wish I could sing. No need I can listen. Love it.
With as much as Conor has been collabing with Dawes and First Aid Kit (particularly using for background vocals on so much of Upside Down Mountain in terms of FAK, and them featuring him on The Lions Roar) -- I could really really see them all putting together like a 5-song EP or something of brand new tracks. ....kinda like Conor and Dawes did for Record Store Day, but adding FAK into the mix, they should go for an EP. I would pay big money even for just that!!
Came back to this 3 years later and still feel exactly the same.
@@Kaalyn_HOW 3 more years ironically lmao. But youre telling me there's stuff out with Conor Oberst and dawes together?
@@zachzaslavsky1139 Yes! They released a double sided record on RSD awhile back. Million Dollar Bill is everything and Dawes did Easy/Lucky/Free. They did a Tiny Desk Concert together, play in live shows and late night performances together, the All Your Favorite Bands video, and probably some other track collabs I'm forgetting bc time is an illusion lol
this is a dream come true.
In all honesty who is talking in the background? Are the singers bothering them? Did they happen to be talking by a creek and were interrupted by First Aid kit, Dawes and Oberst?
Did First Aid Kit, Dawes and Oberst have to interrupt their intimate conversation at the creek for the sake of entertainment?
Man musicians have no respect these days, they come and disturb people's lifes like they don't care.
I think they add to the ambience in a nice way
Makes it sound more like they’re playing in a club. Doesn’t bother
Most people are inconsiderate, oblivious, and just plain asleep... Their whole lives. They live a waking dream. This background chatter during an iconic performance is unsurprising and a testament to my pessimism of the general population. Or it was intentionally recorded, which is very Conor Oberst -esque
Heavenly 💗
