Re: Iris Van Herpen: The continuation of ideas is actually a haute couture tradition going back to, especially, Balenciaga. Constant refining of certain pet ideas or shapes over and over. Yves Saint Laurent did this to great affect also. Plus, there are just certain things which are going to sell because of their popularity. And since in haute couture you only get to make one or two, maybe four, of a design because you can't sell the same dress to more than one woman in country or even continent, re-creating a past popular idea and updating it is a way to make more clients happy without anyone feeling like they'll see themselves coming and going when they go to events.

God I love Iris Van Harpen. I saw that finale dress on instagram and I was struck by how gracefully the whirleygigs matched the movement of the model. the cadence of the walk, that sort of undulating roundness, seemed to match the shape of the "feathers." everything was so evocative of flight, it really was etherial. It's mesmerizing.

The Dior show was so creepy and sad. It reminded me of the Slytherin costumes for Harry Potter; and not the happy first few movies either, but the ones they are all depressed because Voldemort is back. MGC had ghosts playing violins and even the Whomping willow in the middle of the runway. The only one who would wear these designs is Bellatrix Lestrange and she's clinically insane. (and if you fashion people don't know who that is, googling her wardrobe is worth it)

The comments you made on the mgc’s box were EXACTLY how I felt when I first saw that thing drifting down the runway. It’s really just sad that a finally look for Dior haute couture is a fucking box. Even sadder is that the BIGGEST fashion magazines eat it up, like Vogue fucking magazine said good things about a gold fucking box. So I am literally questioning everything at this point, at least Ms. Van Herpen gives me hope

I think what keeps it interesting is that the material and process by which she makes them. Like how do you begin to 3D print a dress that creates an optical illusion of transparency and opacity depending on how you move? That's mind boggling to me.
