Sometime they dont fold the edges and it looks like original but if you look close to the hairy egde it actually two layers glued together, the shiny layer on top and hairy layer at the botthom glued together looks exactly original leather but its not..
pen mightygun - Actually, I must agree with bigkarl24. The Queen's handbag brand is Launer and they fold their edges. Here is an excerpt from their website, Launer.com under craftsmanship. "Making a Launer product takes great skill aquired through experience. One of our beautiful Traviata handbags take up to eight hours to make. We use the best quality leathers and fittings; our leathers are calf, lizard, ostrich and crocodile. Our fittings are designed by us and made in brass, which are then gold plated. The leathers are carefully cut and split. All the parts are cut and separately assembled before being turned into an item. Each piece of leather goods is assembled by one expert craftsperson. All our leather goods have turned edges, which makes them uniquely British."
Good find, thanks for sharing. (Synthetics are customarily folded to hide raw edge, some real leathers can be folded, most aren`t. If a product`s edges are folded, it isn`t guaranteed to be synthetic, that`s where price, company profiles and other visual clues come handy.)
I was in Florence today and looked at leather goods in shops and at sidewalk stalls. I was suspicious of most of it, for exactly the reasons stated in this video. There was no evidence of suede on the back side of the 'leather', but rather they made great efforts to cover the inside of wallets, handbags, etc., with fabric. None of the straps on luggage or handbag straps had a raw edge, instead the edges looked (and felt) smooth and uniform. This was true with every piece I saw at street vendors' stands. I didn't buy anything. Great video! Thanks!!
Can leather be coated in some kind of plastic looking shit? I bought some boots and they look like glossy plastic, they don't look or feel like leather at all, but they do have the exposed edges that you showed in the video, indicating that it must in fact be leather.
In my workshop, when I put on ma leather, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
If I want shoes for Winter I would want some kind of insulating material stuffed inside. Like artificial fur or something. So lically the leather should be only on the outside, right?
Right. Winter where? In Australia? Get flip-flops. Shoes for what? Climbing? Hiking? Running? Skiing? In snow? In ice? In mud? In sand? Different materials are needed for different demand, leather is only good in fairly dry and not too cold weather. In ice climbing, crampons for traction, polyester upper part for abrasion, insulated breathable liner. One material doesn`t do all.
Well, I am from Russia. Temperature well below water freezing point, strong wind, lots of snow and occasional mud during walking around the city. I thought leather with something else put inside is OK. Was I wrong?
I vaguely remember the flame test. Using a lighter or match, hold it against the leather or fake leather. Leather won’t burn or melt. Vinyl, pleather, leatherette probably will melt. However, Lorica might not. I should test all these theories. Haha. However, your rest was what I did before. Fake leather is made of layers with a backing material. Although modern fake leathers, like lorica, might be harder to distinguish.
Be very careful with the term 'genuine leather'. After the top layer is split (top grain leather), the layer underneath is sanded and polished. This is what is called 'genuine leather'. Although it is not PVC, it is far weaker and less durable than the outer layer. The terminology is very deceptive to most people.
Only heat can make you sweat. Real leather has small pores to let some of that heat and water vapor escape, leatherette has none of that, so is traps almost all heat and sweat. Very uncomfy, feels like wearing a garbage bag. Leatherette products do have that "new car/house smell" for a few weeks evaporating the solvents in the glues it is made with. Highly toxic stuff. After a few weeks, no more fumes, and the rest of the toxic stuff is locked into the glue in chemical bonds, so it`s not a health hazard unless they are being licked, chewed, eaten (by pets) so ingested constantly.

Some companies do fold the endges on leather product to make a more endless and better line

Good one. It`s also unlikely to find genuine leather articles in Firenze at tourist-y locations, street vendors, ..
I am an italian from tuscany and I can confirm that
Tnx nice technique, I always use this, but the companies are getting smarter and “eviler” so sometimes they succeed in faking this specification
Very straightforward thank-you
SIr, THANK YOU so much for a very useful tip!
Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling this was the case with leather.
Thanks you my guy.

Could be coated, yes
@@theoverengineer What would be the benefit of that? How are you supposed to treat the leather, if you can't get to it because of the coating?
How to do to know when is microfiber?
Dixon leather jackets? Real or fake?

Leather softens and disintegrates in mud/wet snow/water in 3 months. Not the best idea.
Thanks for the advice!
so those black boots next to the brown ones you also show are real leather as they have exposed edges? correct?
+safe peters Black boot: real leather, brown shoe not leather.
... and MUCH NEEDED one!
this is so helpful.. I'm gonna try this method .
Great!

Absolutely, his thinking was: the $15 plastic wallet holds your 3 cards just as well.
