Will Leather Burn? Burning Leather Test

  • Do all leathers burn the same? In our rough experiment, we test different leather tannages and leather alternatives to see how they react to heat and burning. Real leather burns very slowly whereas fake leather burns quickly. We tested out different types of leather such as Louis Vuitton's coated canvas (the results for this also apply to PU leathers), full vegetable tan, vegetable re-tannage with chrome base, and full chrome tan. Watch how it turned out!
Although this is a good way to test if the leather is real or not, we recommend that you test it if you're really going to buy the product. And please always be careful if you want to test your leather goods. Stay safe!

In Turkey one shopowner showed me fake leather a year ago, which he hold on a lighter for more than 5 seconds and still it didn't deform or loose color. Im wondering what kind of fake leather that was. He told for himself it was a new kind of fake leather which is almost not to hold apart from real leather

Chrome and vegetable tanned leather has good and bad characteristics.I am starting a small boot company.Vegetable tanned leather linings have a mold problem really easy.Chrome tanned split or grain leather however not .Veg tanned absorbs water .Chrome does not .Veg tanned doesn like heat if it's wet and starts to shrink and crack .Chrome can be washed and dried to some extent. So you decide if you want the thick full grain vegetable tanned leather lining and have dry feeling feet or take the thinner chrome tanned split and have slightly sweatier feet .
Also vegetable tanned leather tanning agents leach out with bleach and it turns back to rawhide.Chrome tanned leather does not.
Can you do a mold test maybe ?Clamp leather in between two acrylic pieces.

@@tanner.leatherstein I mean I am not a tanner but there is a lot of misinformation about high quality leather. How about cleaning the leather.People are scarred about making a stretching solution with alcohol to work the leather on a boot .I don't consider it very harmful. However removing mold with bleach is a terrible idea especially with veg tan.It will leach out the tanning agents.Vingear however is a volatile compound and evaporates compleatly . Killing the mold and evaporates.
Cleaning leather. If the water stays clear or slightly grey good .It turn dark brown bad /tanning agents leached out .
Chrome tanned leather can be cleaned countless times with saddle soap or even dish soap .Veg tanned also but less often is better .
Preserving oils : People " only use 100% natural"
Really ? The tanner makes sure to remove those unstable fats and oils and you put them back in?
People:" don't leave the saddle soap in or only use a tiny bit it removes all the oils "
That's what you are supposed to do . Remove old spoiled natural oils like neatsfootoil or mink and replace them with fresh .
Oil not only makes the leather flexible bit it also protects the tanning agents.
Leather is very complicated from a chemical standpoint but people should accept that some technices are outdated because of a better understanding of how tanning works .
      That's my standpoint:)

This was very informative thanks. Can you say more about the veg retannage? I am surprised it still has 1 percent chromium. Are there some liquid test I can run on leather to see if it has any chromium?

I would not do it in a store but that can be used when street/marked sellers try to convince you it's leather .If it melts it's pu and they lied to you .They will be angry that you destroyed something. But they lied to you .
