It's worth replacing the calipers also while everything's off, they're not expensive. The condition here is very poor, there is potential they will seize and destroy your clutch. Decent gloves, eye protection and a knee mat would also have made the job a tad safer and more comfortable. Strong gloves prevent "Monday Morning Hands" full of nasty little cuts, grazes and bruises. Hate that. Sway bar bushings can be done easily while it's off the brackets. Also, here, the wheel speed sensor looks to have been taken off recently but if it's been untouched for a while, it's a good idea to give it a look over while the shields off. It's much easier access so making sure the bolt is free-running and the sensor can be easily withdrawn will make things easier down the line when the sensor goes. It's worth having a quick run through of the job before actually starting it; make sure all the bolts can be removed particularly the hub nut, drive shaft to diff bolts and the shield bolts. This will give time to get any replacements or get out any that shear etc and it makes the real job a whole lot easier and less tiring - it's a tough job.
learnt something new today,,, mine is rwd so it is bit different, all goes to the drive axle vs trailing arm on yours, had to watch over and over again one part because I got stupid for a moment 😂😂😂
Well done! We must have done ours at the same time! I spent about a day and half getting mine done in the end. Rounded a couple of driveshaft bolts going into the diff when taking out the driveshaft but managed to knock a smaller socket on to loosen them. Then trying to get the outer race off the hub with the bearing splitter. What a bleedin faff! Still i love working on my cars as a hobby but this nearly finished my back off 😭 Good job mate 👍🏻
Horrible job just to replace those backplates! That poor E46 was well rusty, still we gotta save 'em if we can. Good video. O'LearysGenuineBMW (give him a like & follow) covered rear hub removal in his video here should anyone or you Brady be doing this again in the future > ruclips.net/video/d_vWJog_W1A/видео.html.
Is it a bad idea instead of removing the hub so the dust plate can come off, to cut the dust plate just enough so it can slide out from the side and do the same thing to the new dust shield?
That is one way of doing it, the downside to that is where you cut will need to be sprey Ed to prevent rust, my car needed the bearing replacing so done the both the same time 😊
1:17 Where's the rotor?? How did you get the rotor off with the calliper in place???? Were you driving around with no rear brakes? What's that all about?
Awesome video. Thanks for the knowledge! I was curious about replacing a dust shield. Would I have to bleed the breaks if I were to replace the dust shield?

spray phosphoric acid on those rusted parts it will be gone and cleaned nicely
Pain in the arse job mate. Respect for explaining it so well.
Yes it’s a nightmare haha and thank you 👍

You should at least clean and paint the caliper...
Would have like to do that but for the purposes of the video painting it was not necessary

@@bradytruezero8739 Thank you for taking your time to answer my question. You've earned a new sub
@@ДимитърИванов-и8ж no problem and thank you 🙏
A VERY fine smear of copper on the BACK of the pad will stop any potential brake squeal. (Only if the pad doesn’t have a special coating already)
Got all this to do in the next few weeks. Good vid thanks
Really good mate, shows me the parts I missed for getting my garage to do the job. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the kind words 🙏
After all that work u used the old rusty bults and that tired calliper.
Thanks for the video doe
It is a shame but they where still in working order and as it’s a budget build I’m only replacing parts that are broken or to be upgraded 😊
1:17 Where's the rotor?? How did you get the rotor off with the calliper in place????
Were you driving around with no rear brakes?
What's that all about?
The rota was removed before and the caliper put on so it wasn’t dangling
@@bradytruezero8739 Ok.
Great video man. Covers all the important bits. Like how to do it!!!
Where did you get that puller kit and slide hammer?
@@veritasaequitas9875 thanks man appreciate it and eBay years ago 👍
Nice one..My e46 330d on going job.handbrake backing plate broken bearing gone.
Where are your brake discs???
They where already removed by the previous owner
What kit did you use for this?
It was a kit from ebay 👍
Pull the handbrake up a couple of times to position the shoes before doing the ratchet adjustment.
Excellent, and no music, perfect
Thank you 🙏

Thank you 🙏 and no need to bleed the brakes when changing the dust shield 👍

a very
very informative video but try to use treaded rod to avoid messing with the wheel bolts
