  • Still, 14-year-old Martina started off her second season on the WTA tour, and this was her first Wimbledon appearance. She was unlucky to have had to play Steffi in the first round.
    Steffi and Martina ❤
    Enjoy!

Funny thing, when Graf ended her Grand Slam career in 1999, she also ended Hingis' Grand Slam career

I hardly think it is talent but a result of her mothers ambition, who started her tennis education when she was two years old. Graf also was just 3 when she started playing. This is the "secret" of most of the big players.

You could see the tremendous talent Hingis already had. Of course at this point very underdeveloped and with a serve only half as good as her future serve (which was pretty good, never great, but much better than this) she was never going to be able to hang with Graf, an opponent who was very tough for her even when Hingis was at her peak and Graf past her prime in late 98-99. But the potential and talent for the future was already obvious.

Hingis had a game that seemed displaced in time...she was fortunate to play in the vacuum created by the absence of Graf during her knee surgery/rehab, and before the Williams sisters hit their stride. Incredible anticipation and redirect of the ball, but power players started running her around then blowing her off the court (which might have contributed to her foot problems).

@@broncoguy4862 I partly agree, but I think if she had won some of those heartbreaking big matches she narrowly lost, like the 99 French Open final vs Graf, the 2000 US Open semis vs Hingis, and worst of all the 2002 Australian Open final vs Capriati, she wins several more slams. She has respectable records vs all the power players, even the ones she has losing records against like Davenport and Serena. Well except for Graf, but she was only 14 or 15 for atleast half the matches.

Hingis became number one when Graf had her knee surgery and when Seles struggled with post stabbing difficult times. When the Williams came into the game, Hingis's "domination " immediately came to an end.

She was a decent athlete too bad she didn't take her fitness and stamina seriously.

Does Graf have a winning record against Hingis?? I don't think Graf ever lost to her at Wimbledon, and didn't play her during Hingis '97 Championship...And of course never beat her at Roland Garros in that classic 1999 final!!

Graf had tightened up Her game after all those losses to Seles, she was scared this branded “up and coming” player might be another Seles and in some ways that was true.

What do you mean by "all those losses"?
She had lost only 4 (!) to that Serbian Screamer (2 losses being extremely close ones).
But 11 to Sabatini, 9 to Navratilova and 8 to Sanchez whose style of play troubled her more.

Seles record against Hingis is atrocious. Graf could beat Seles in straights if she was on her A game. Graf won quite a few matches when Monica could only win a few games.

I prefer her 1994 first round. But then again, I dislike Martina even more.
