  • i'm not saying you should buy a camcorder...
but i'm also not saying you shouldn't...
    Cameras I tested:
    Sony Ax-33 (Similar to the FDR AX-43 & 53)
Sony CX240 (Similar to the CX405 & literally every other handycam that has the same body style 🙃)

It's the soft look and indescribable film grain and the old 2000s camera colors that make any clip from these camcorders feel nostalgic

Cameras have honestly gotten too good, to the point of being boring. Nothing captures life better than the dinkiness of an older camera. The shots of you going around town with friends are so much more fun and life like than professional grade shots of the same thing. This makes me want to get a super 8.

The connections and all are a blessing in tv modern era compatibility for new tv sets and all but for a dvd recorder the hdrcx240 I find is kind of a double edge sword for it makes only via computer a possible backup method.. as no dvddirect sony dvd burners are compatible I found out.
But eh oh well.. it is what it is I suppose.

Vibes are a really underrated camera metric people should really give more weight too when buying gear. That being said the AX-33 has a lot better dynamic range than the CX240 but the CX240 has a ghosting and chromatic aberration wide open that does give it a certain 00s home movie aesthetic

Being in film school made me use other stuff and relegated that cam to a mistake on my part (it costed me many more hundred bucks because I bought it brand new) but seeing this has reminded me that I could still give it many uses.

Vibes are real. Looking back at the past 2 decades of my camcorder/camera history, as the resolution, stability and low light performance increased, we lost something far more important. Ease of use, so easy that i can pass it to whomever im with and they intuitively know how to use it, autofocus that just works... I swear my digital hi8 camcorder had better autofocus then my Panasonic S5... We had it good.

I dunno, if you're going for "vibes", better pick up the oldest camera you can possibly get, because most of this footage in this video looks like a shitty phone footage. I think some old digicam would work better if you're going for some vintage aesthetic. It's like film emulation, when people are afraid to go all in on selling the film look with proper grain, texture and various imperfections, it doesn't look good. Otherwise... You want ease of use? I think you can see the difference in picture quality in the 4k VS 1080p because of the filter affect it has on the video, almost like water color painting on the sides of objects makes it look like a cheap Fiji film camera sometimes

I have an AX53 and I love how versatile it is, especially the image stabilisation and zoom range (26.8 to 536mm). I do wish it could shoot log and had a higher dynamic range (and maybe more depth of field) but even without that it's pretty great. I do want to get a ZV-E1 eventually but I'm pretty sure I'll keep the AX53 around as a b-cam for the zoom range. Like carrying a telephoto lens except it's its own camera. I'm generally surprised by how few RUclipsrs use camcorders, especially in the vlogging space and other non-filmmaking spaces since they're much more convenient for point and shoot than a handheld mirrorless and some of them do have pretty great image quality.

Actually, I have that Sony AX33 camera and it is a great camera, but I have to say quite bad if you want to make videos in dark place. Still, you can make it spooky with a night vision setting.

5:30 I agree that the eyepiece is worthy of first-mention feature. When hand-held and zoomed in, it's a must.
I wish I could find an inexpensive CX405-size camcorder with the eyepiece. 1080p is fine. What would you recommend?

I wish I knew! I'm not sure it exists, or I have yet to see a small camcorder with an eyepiece! Let me know if you find one 😄

Oh hey water treatment plant thought I recognized that lol. I'm a gadget nerd always trolling FB marketplace recently bought a canon m50 to properly start my channel and then the giant 16mm lens. These cameras definitely reminded me of my dad who's definitely a camcorder dad lol. This was cool love your editing and now I want a camcorder 😂

(it's also never too late to add a camcorder to your collection😜)

Good video :) used it a few years back and at the time it was crisp ! but recently my son said" Dad that is an ancient camcorder !" ( have not used it for a few years) when we went to Wales for a short vacation so neglected it and used our Samsung phones :( had a cheapish tripod had some good and bad results ! wished I had used my Sony cx240 with a good sturdy tripod will give it a whirl next time out! thanks for restoring the faith ;)

Its a small camera but you can carry 2 batteries in the body of the CX405 giving over 10hrs of battery life!

Was there any specific settings you used on the cx240, or did you just open it and start recording? It has that retro look a little, and I wanted that look. Great video btw, I bought the cx240 because of this vid!!

They have the same sensor size. A better video would be the CX405 Vs the Panasonic VX981 that thing can have an ND filter.

Quite some time ago, my main camera was a Panasonic DVX200. It was such a fun time shooting with it. If I'd ever have the amount of money to burn, I would probably get the Panasonic X1500E. And I mean really money to burn, because I am not blind to the fact that this camera will be used twice a year at most lol.

Probably the best alternative for your needs is the Panasonic HC-VXF1 - It has the same lens train and sensor as the X1500 and benefits from being much lighter in weight.
