literally the only reason i love camcorders over everything is because of the zoom function. You could either snap that zoom or you could slowllllyyyyy zoom in and I just love having that control. its a technique i use in so many of my edits
Cameras have honestly gotten too good, to the point of being boring. Nothing captures life better than the dinkiness of an older camera. The shots of you going around town with friends are so much more fun and life like than professional grade shots of the same thing. This makes me want to get a super 8.
The connections and all are a blessing in tv modern era compatibility for new tv sets and all but for a dvd recorder the hdrcx240 I find is kind of a double edge sword for it makes only via computer a possible backup method.. as no dvddirect sony dvd burners are compatible I found out. But eh oh well.. it is what it is I suppose.
Vibes are a really underrated camera metric people should really give more weight too when buying gear. That being said the AX-33 has a lot better dynamic range than the CX240 but the CX240 has a ghosting and chromatic aberration wide open that does give it a certain 00s home movie aesthetic
yeah that's exactly why i love minidv cameras so much. i would go for hi8 too but i prefer the fact you can throw minidv clips at the computer easier also why i shoot only with film camera lenses on my digital camera
thanks for making a video like this- this helped inspire me to settle with one of these cameras that are easier to handle and more fun to use instead of investing in a super high quality canon that might be difficult to learn on.
I'm going on a relatively long trip in 2 days and this has just opened my eyes because I have that exact 1080p camcorder and haven't used it for some years. Being in film school made me use other stuff and relegated that cam to a mistake on my part (it costed me many more hundred bucks because I bought it brand new) but seeing this has reminded me that I could still give it many uses.
Greattttt video! I like the 1080p cam. The aesthetic is realllyyyyy nostalgic, reminds me of home videos that you keep and show your family ❤️ I definitely need one
This kind of just popped up in my recommended and I’m not sure why, but I’m glad it did. I’m planning on ditching my iPhone as soon as it craps out and switching to a flip phone, and although I haven’t always been crazy about taking photos and videos, and I don’t like being that guy that’s always pointing a camera at something, I’ve been getting into film photography lately as well as skateboarding, so I think this is something I’d like to have with me once I don’t have an iPhone camera anymore.
Great video, love old camcorders as there so easy to use and build purely for what it is unlike cameras designed for shooting photos. Have many cameras like gh5 and dji action and so on but always go back to shooting video with camcorders that tends to be more pleasing to the eye rather than over sharpness and exposed of modern cameras. Great video mate
I bought a Vixia HF G40 refurbished from Canon and save a ton of money and it came with the standard warranty. It included all of the accessories that you would expect to find in the box of a brand new camcorder. I bought so many refurbished equipment from Canon over the years and saved lots of money and never had an issue with any of their refurbished camcorders, DSLR, mirrorless cameras, EF/RF lenses. Get one.
How did you get the cx240s video to look like that? Did you add any editing or color grading to the footage or does it look like that when it’s straight footage?
I am still using my beloved handy cams even in 2024, I just love these cameras, and they can shoot wonderful clips and images in good light conditions, what I love about them, they beat any modern camera hands down, and they never overheat, the zoom is smooth and fast, the image quality is excellent they hardly ever lose focus, yes it can get noisy in low light conditions, so do your eyes. I just love those old cameras.
Thank you for saying this in 2023! I started using camcorders in 2014 and after daily use , they proved out to be the best video devices for shooting long hours like interviews, events or festivals.
hey man do you remember what cam did you used in the shot at 4:42 ? I feel it might be the Ax-33 because the image quality is quite sharp... but who knows! thx :)
For people who got annoyed with chromatic abberation from the 405, you can get the competitor Panasonic HC-V180 with similar price tag but with nicer result. The trade off? The mic for 405 is WAY better. with V180 the video quality is better but you need to edit the voice later or using separate voice recorder.
I bought a CX220 when it was first released and it still works. I recently gave it to my daughter because I have a CX405. I have cameras that shoot 4K videos but I find myself still using my cheap camcorders.
I've been working on digital transfers of my 8mm camcorder tapes from my childhood for a couple upcoming youtube videos of my own, so that along with seeing this resurgence in camcorder videography is absolutely inspiring me to get one once my wife and I have kids. Even to burn some blu rays of the footage so they don't get lost in cloud storage or external hard drives. Thanks for inspiring me further!
I think you can see the difference in picture quality in the 4k VS 1080p because of the filter affect it has on the video, almost like water color painting on the sides of objects makes it look like a cheap Fiji film camera sometimes But for price and portability I do like the smaller form factor of the 1080p one 😊
Canon Legria FS line are tiny standard definition camcorders perfect to achieve retro vibes footage. Canon FS 406 or FS 200 are great. You get retro vibes footage in 16:9 aspect ratio and recorded to SDHC cards. Just awesome.
Great video. I've been looking for a camcorder or other camera that will give you a great vibe while shooting and still have good enough picture quality.
This is such an awesome video!! Amazing edits, and great thoughts and insights! I've been wanting to buy a nice mirrorless camera for videoing memories for a while now. But I may just pickup a camcorder while I save up. The memories are worth more than the money spent on it. Thanks again, this video is very inspiring, I may just pickup one soon.
VX1 is a great bit of kit. A camera literally made for recording videos! And it doesn't overheat and shutdown after 30 minutes. Dont follow the perceived meta 🤘🏼
I’ve recently just got into photography from a friend and I found an old sony camcorder I used to mess around with when I was younger and it brings back a bunch of memories.
I have an AX53 and I love how versatile it is, especially the image stabilisation and zoom range (26.8 to 536mm). I do wish it could shoot log and had a higher dynamic range (and maybe more depth of field) but even without that it's pretty great. I do want to get a ZV-E1 eventually but I'm pretty sure I'll keep the AX53 around as a b-cam for the zoom range. Like carrying a telephoto lens except it's its own camera. I'm generally surprised by how few RUclipsrs use camcorders, especially in the vlogging space and other non-filmmaking spaces since they're much more convenient for point and shoot than a handheld mirrorless and some of them do have pretty great image quality.
I too have an Ax53 that is OK in auto mode but is limited in manual settings unfortunately, although it's not a bad "point n shoot" camera. I also have a PanasonicHC-X2000 to use if I want full control, but is bigger and not quite so easy to use hand held.
Having log capability and a higher dynamic range would defeat the whole purpose. If that's what you want there's already thousands of new cameras that can do that.
I have the cx405 and I got the camera to get the nostalgic look of older tape cameras and I find myself with the toy camera filter always on and set to warm. The filter just adds that little bit of extra noise I think but still has good quality.
I actually JUST bought that exact camera, the cx240, like 2 weeks ago 😳 it’s SO easy to use and keep around. I can hang it off the key keeper on my belt to carry it and it feels like nothing.
5:30 I agree that the eyepiece is worthy of first-mention feature. When hand-held and zoomed in, it's a must. I wish I could find an inexpensive CX405-size camcorder with the eyepiece. 1080p is fine. What would you recommend?
Great video! I have a Panasonic vx1 that I use for wildlife after I almost didn't get my old Sigma 150-600 on a plane with my carry-on 😅. The size and weight make camcorders nice for easy hiking and travel.
I just picked up a Sony VG10, it's only 1080i, but you can change lenses.. I put a 10mm rectilinear lens on it and it's a pretty dope little skate rig.
Im sooo jealous i have been looking for camera like that for cheap for soooo long because im broke. I am trying to find a job too so maybe I could afford a more expensive camera like that. Maan I just want to get filming videos and do "documentaries" of my life on a handycam😭
To the uploader, you can mod the 405 by adding filter mount and coldshoe. There's this guy who glued filter mount and coldshoe, so he can put all kind of filters to make his videos more interesting and the coldshoe so he can add extra light or a mic. The great thing with cheap tech is that you can experiment with it without worrying about ruining an expensive electronic.
Yeahhh.. the Sony Hdrcx240 is definetly not going to be rugged I imagine for skateboarding based on well the blue one that us.. but yeah it does I suppose for convenience the buttons form for controls vs touchscreen as in highschool I found the concept of a touchscreen to be tough as I could not see where my finger covered up some of the screen.. but that was a dcrsx45 if I recall from highschool that I preffered for the one or two semester 11th grade year I did use it.. vs the cannon vixia hd touch screen ones.. simply due to having had my handycam already by then.. but that was clear back in 2018-19 so I may have not fully been able to fairly recall the experiences of the sx45... but neither of the handycams I recall using had any BUILT IN/HDD memory but do slightly have some variations like touch screen/hd vs sd/size of sd card/formerly made memorystick vs memorystick 2/micro sd etc.. but also hdmi vs only composite/s video output vs optional seperate by rumour available.. multi terminal connecting composite out on the hdrcx240 but also the presence of built in light and a few more things but yeah.
the zoom range on both of these cameras (and most camcorders is pretty insane) I don't think you would have much problem shooting surfing with any camcorder really!
Quite some time ago, my main camera was a Panasonic DVX200. It was such a fun time shooting with it. If I'd ever have the amount of money to burn, I would probably get the Panasonic X1500E. And I mean really money to burn, because I am not blind to the fact that this camera will be used twice a year at most lol.
Probably the best alternative for your needs is the Panasonic HC-VXF1 - It has the same lens train and sensor as the X1500 and benefits from being much lighter in weight.
casually stuffing my face 4:11
the internet needs to know we eat guuuud
and you look so cute doing it🤭
It's the soft look and indescribable film grain and the old 2000s camera colors that make any clip from these camcorders feel nostalgic
This camera has bad low light performance. The grain is caused by noise.
All digital grain is caused by noise. Some people like it
Y'all don't know what film grain is do you?
literally the only reason i love camcorders over everything is because of the zoom function. You could either snap that zoom or you could slowllllyyyyy zoom in and I just love having that control. its a technique i use in so many of my edits

But zooming in is not slow enough.
