  • Pleural effusions are when excess fluid get caught between two layers of tissue (the visceral and parietal pleurae) surrounding the lungs. This fluid can build up over time, taking up space in the lung and impairing a person’s ability to breath. Learn about the signs and symptoms of pleural effusions such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and dry coughing. Created by Jannah George.

omg this is so helpful! I had pleural effusion after a pulmonary embolism. ER Dr said it was pneumonia and sent me home, family member who's a nurse said he was wrong and should've done a lateral decubitus x-ray... went back and ended up spending another week in the hospital! :( I always wondered why one of my symptoms was coughing!

Thank you very much. You described it to me better than my doctors. And my dry cough makes sense now.

Visceral pleura covers the lobes each, not entire lobes.

Great video. Just one comment: One to two tea spoons would probably be better to tell an estimate in mls to be more "technical".

10th of March this year i had symptoms of difficult in breathing together with severe sharp pains around my lungs regions.
I took chest xray and it showed i had pleural effusion more on my right lung. Doctors gave me antibiotics (AZUMA-Azithromycine) in which i took them for five days i started to feel well... and then I had my heart, kidney and liver examined and the results were just fine. So doctors thought my pleural effusion might have been caused by pneumonia so they gave me Ceftriaxone.
9th of April i took xray it showed very small amount of pleural effusion on my right lung. At this point I was recovering.
Then May 1st i started experiencing the same symptoms as of march, chest pains and heaviness, difficult in breathing, pains at my back.. All of it indicating pleural effusion.
6th of may this year the doctors started me the Anti-TB drugs, in which i am using them to this day more than a month and a week but my condition is still getting worse.
    Need your help/advice

April 17, I was diagnosed with a pleural effusion on my right lung. I rested for two weeks and it went away. I went back to working and exercising. July 17th, I feel the same shooting pain, pressure, difficulty breathing. I went for a chest x-ray which revealed, "New right upper lobe opacity which may be due to pneumonia. Neoplasm cannot be excluded." I was given antibiotics (Doxycycline). The antibiotics produce a dry cough, causing more pain and difficulty sleeping and eating. I am due for another chest X-ray in a few days.
My problem is that I was completely fit, athletic, before I received the JJ Janssen Vaccine on April 1st. Is there a possibility, is there any data on the vaccine causing pleural effusion?
