Have the double cardane replaced with a standard u joint assembly there is no were near enough angle to have it on there. Regular joints are much less expensive and easier to replace plus most are greasable.
A rebuild kit is the same at 30k miles or 160k miles. But, yeah, I’d say drain and refill every 4th oil change depending on how much you’re using 4WD. The 271D is a divorced drive and it’s only about 2 3/4 quarts of ATF4
I have been diving Dodge and Ram 4X4 trucks since the late 80s, and in my opinion, it is almost impossible to beat the NP 205 transfercase in a work truck on the ranch we are under trailer the majority of the time and the manual lockouts and gear driven transfercase showed their superiority to the newer trucks
They usually fail cause they don't get serviced enough because it's got a live front axle so that chain spins all the time. Most common failure is chain stretch fron not being serviced enough
Just a note: I made the effort to grease this hidden spring zerk on my NEW 2017 Ram 6.7L CTD. I bought the correct needed fitting - Gave the fitting 4 pumps of Red Amsoil grease - The same red new grease began to come out the back side of the joint! Yes- the same new grease! The U-joint was shipped from the factory DRY! I don't use 4WD much - only during the Winter months. Transfer Case fluid gets drained & refilled every 40K miles & Front Shaft will be greased again at that time.
Lyle Conway : A go pro on mine says it does not! But mine is a HD2500 with a BW44-46 transfer case! So I will apply grease again after med/heavy 4WD use. No use re-applying grease if the shaft is not turning when not in use!
Just rebuilt my NP271 in my ‘03, including replacing the front case half as the factory/OEM style non-greasable u-joints at the cardan failed without warning and locked the cardan at maximum angle and cracked the front case half. Bad design.
There must be 50 ways to lose your transfer case. (Paul Simon). I had a Chevy transfer case that I couldn’t get the fill plug out of so I put some tape around the pump tip like the one you have, and I pumped in the fluid from the drain hole and put the plug in fast.
ATF Oil is thin like water! I use Tractor fluid -THD in the winter , it’s approximately like 5-30 engine oil . Engine works very well too. In the summer I run 85-140! The thicker the better for longevity!!! Less leaks. Try it!
Also, how is a “Transfer Case Shop” able to stay in business? That’s like saying a “Radio Volume Knob Shop” told me to only adjust the volume in 3rd gear

Don't feel too bad if you miss the grease point in the double cardan. My 03 doesn't have the lube spot so I took it apart at 130K to check it. It was still like new (except the seal had fallen out).
I have an 03 also and I have never found it and there’s no sticker like the 09 has so I believe it doesn’t have one. It has survived over 400k now. Joints seem tight so I guess it’s good to keep running
@@OutpostCTD 130K here. When I took the one U-joint out to get to the ball, it was like new and still had the bluish grease in it. All the others are tight as well so I left them alone.
i have an 03 2500 as well and I wanna get my front driveshaft rebuilt just to be on the safe side. I can run the truck no issue without my front driveshaft correct?
You did not pour the Castrol ATF from the original bottle into a Napa bottle. Now why would somebody do something like that? I think you're just trying to cover for the fact that you're mixing brands of oil and you don't want to take any flak for it. Am I right
To avoid early failure of this and the front diff, install manual locking hubs so you aren’t spinning the spiders and front shaft all the time

Fluid change every 30k and if it is dark or gray get a rebuild kit and rebuild it before it breaks or the cost is double.

People at the factory may not even know its greaseable and that wouldnt surprise me either
Front drive shaft is always spinning. It can fail and fly apart in the summer in 2wd

Appreciate the vids...this was already on my to do list so perfect timing. Thanks!

Single piece drive shaft is not factory, all OEM both short and long bed 1500-3500s have the center carrier
Um, so you just drained and refilled your transfer case? Good job 👍

I would love to have a truck like that

The grease point is recessed.
Use a Lincoln 5803 needle tip.
The 18 gauge slash cut tip will Not work.
A transfer case shop told me not to use atf.But to use full syn 5-w30 motor oil instead. He said atf was to thin.
Synthetic 5 or 0W30 depending on the model, check out RSGear’s recommended lubricants here:

Sure if you want to clog the oil pump. This made sense to you?

Nice good job thanx for the videos
Great vid! I need to do mine on my 2008 dodge cummins. Thanks!
Great Job. Thanks, I am going to do mine!
Extremely helpful. Thank you.

Yes. You can remove your front driveshaft and still run truck with no issues.

I would stick with the recommendations from the manufacturer
I thought they switched to the 4th gen in 09. You sure that's not an 08. Matter of fact. Yes. Yes it is an 08.
It is an 09. You’re thinking of the half tons
That’s a np 273D
Yup, ATF4 is why it fails...

Happen to remember the size of the Allen on the full plug?
I think it is 10mm
