When you adjust for population, the results of Finland are absolutely extraordinary. There are only 5.5 million Finns in the entire country, in the Toronto metro area there are just about that many people. Whatever the Finns are doing in hockey development, the rest of the world should try to emulate it.
Why is it that when Finnish players at 18 years of age, come to America they can speak English. While 50 percent of Francophone players who are surrounded by 360 million English speaking people do not understand or speak English when they are drafted. Something to think about.
Fala Ai adjusted for population and more specific adjusted for boys who play hockey, Sweden is waay ahead of us finns. Finland and Canada are only countries where hockey is the number one spott
1111 the French are (or were) encouraged not to learn English (they think/thought French should be the world language). When internet came around, it was illegal to set up English language sites in France. In Finland English is practically the second local language because more people speak it than Swedish (which is the 2nd official language). You can live and work in Finland easily by knowing English only
@Fala Ai 5.5 million is the whole population including babyes and elders. If you just count childs at age 4 to 10 years old from whole population and then from that pick you separete the childrens that plays Hockey then we are really talki g about ONLY some few thousands of childs to coach. It all starts from the sosiety. In Finland almost any hobby or school for childrens under 10 years are nearly free. There is some season and insurance fees but they are literally payable for almost anybody and if not, then we have social care that gives support for payments and at least equipment. Also used equipments are usually just given forward to younger childs to start with. Also schools and schools everyday food is totally free. So te enviroment for the child to grow and learn is set up such a way that at under 10 year old almost anything is possible. It really is more or less the adults choise to adjust familys home and stuff so it is suitable for the opportunity. Then there is this very high standard junior coaching culture where todays coaches does not try to win everything today and in this season. They look years forward for every junior prospect and their junior career is well planned for possible NHL career, if not, then plan b for maybe Europe or in Finland Liiga wich is good option always. Its more about the money in that point. NHL makes millionares, where Liiga gives a decent money in Finland. Some hundred of thousands if youre top player in top team. English is well learned at young age. Every not Finnish language tv show or movie is subtitled in Finnish. Were other countries like French dub their movies. So we listen all movies, cartoons and shows in original English language but we can read the subtitles in Finnish. This gives good base for learning English. Many childs can more or less read before school but at age 7 when first grade ends almost every child can read and write basic stuff. At third grade when childs are about age 9-10 comes the English studies and childs studies english all the way to high school last grade nine. So at age 15-16 childs and youngs has watched English cartoons and such several years and after that studied english several years at basic school like about 7 years. English is also a must course in colleges and trade schools and such. So basicly almost every Finn young can at least understand English before age 18. Most of them speaks English well enough. After age 10 if child is a good prospect he or she is taken care of if family do not have the money or so. But if not, then the system is more harsh but same time engourages to find some thing else where the young might have better talents or opportunityes. Thiss all summed together makes dozens of quality players only from some few thousands of juniors. And huge shout out to the 80-90 era of Finnish players who made the bridges into NHL, like Jari Kurri, Esa Tikkanen, Saku Koivu, Teemu Selänne, Kimmo Timonen, Miikka Kiprusoff, and many many more. Also the sosiety makes different choises for crimes. Where in USA all small crimes makes human more like an animal and the judgements and penalties destroys the lives like stealing a candy gives like a 10 years in prison because it could have given the next door neighbour a headache. So in Finland there is systems to really try to guide and push the junior to some activity where he is good and can feel that it is the best way to survive. Why to steal when there is plenty of choises to study or play and earn the way up. The reality of course is some where between and this is only a vision of the ideology behind success. There is failures and then there is Ahos, Laines and such. Think about this. When Laine was 16 he was still playing at Finnish farm league and had HUGE auctority broblems and was broblem junior. System and support net gave him what he is now. Where in some other countries he would have banned long ago. Hopefully this gives some deeper sight for the Finnish system.
