- ✤ Hey RUclips Lovers, Welcome to “Chris Alstrin Films” ✤
I hope you enjoy this video
Wide Boyz is a film myself and Paul Diffley filmed back in 2009. Pete Whittaker and Tom Randell came to the United States from England to climb the hardest Off-Width climbs in the States. I filmed everything in the US and Paul filmed everything in the UK.
Fun Fact a year after the film was released I had a local Sheriff come to my house and served me with papers. The US Park service came after me for filming in a National Park without a permit. I had to hire a lawyer and pay fines for it to go away.
I hope you enjoy this film, there's a short version which Reel Rock made back in the day but I've always enjoyed this version.
Drop a comment if you want!! I will try my best to answer to everyone ;) and more!

“I’m not saying I’m good at what I do” lmfao Pete.
Hope you're doing great Chris, thanks for sharing 🤙
I sounded much more 'Derbyshire' back then 😂
It doesn't count until you do it without shoes. Do it again.
Hey Pete, yeah man hope you're doing great as well. I haven't seen you since Yosemite. Let me know when you're back in the states it would be cool to hang again!
@@ChrisAlstrin Any chance you have a source for the music beginning at 27:15? Few of us from the comments have looked but no luck
@@biolizard131 I do! I have uploaded it to my dropbox. www.dropbox.com/s/451ady7csv15z3w/glassman3.wav?dl=0
@@ChrisAlstrin Ah brilliant, is it a custom song made for the film?
Genuinely an insane achievement, massive respect to Tom and Pete. As soon as I saw them leave the cams in place I just knew those bitter old guys were going to have a problem with it. And then, after they did it the second time, he STILL had an issue because they did it using less protection than he’d have felt comfortable with but guess what bud, you didn’t do it did you!
I guess bitter old guys is the best description.
He does come off as a bit bitter but I think he's also trying to give anyone who gets the same idea a bit of pause. He's saying, 'they did it risky & I'm not personally comfortable with that level of risk' which is fair enough
@@lostleviathan2352 Yet, am i the only one who senses a bit of sarcasm in his final "well done boys"?
@@lullen5827 Yea he really didn't come across well, from the way he presented himself for the interview to the stupid eyeball thing to the snarky comments, wasn't a good look.
@@lullen5827 oh I would agree with you there. His tone gives the impression that he has lots of old man envy
Pete and Tom have cemented themselves in climbing history and lore. If you follow climbing even somewhat adjacently, you’re bound to run into the Wide Boyz and there’s so few that venture into the waters they do. Congratulations, you guys crush.
Great movie!
I'm personally not a big fan of the "it does not count" comment. I think it's important to be transparent about which style you did a climb, but down playing a climb that you were not able to do because the style of the ascensionist isn't yours is a bit narrow minded. It's like Honnold telling Ondra that silence does not count because he used a rope.
Glad you enjoyed it. I agree, being transparent about the style you did a climb is very important. I laughed when I read your analogy about Honnold telling Ondra. That's a good one.
I heard Pete and Tom say on a podcast that the locals had told them that pre placed gear was ethically ok for a climb like this because it was ridiculous to lug that many cams. The whinging came afterwards from back home. It's
Yeah, they need to get over themselves like come on id like to see those guys try it again
Stevie out there doing yoga while thinking ballet is dainty, as if there's a yoga regiment on Earth that comes close to the intensity of professional ballet training.
Yeah this kind of turned me into being not such a fan of stevie lol
Yeah, I'm not sure if he meant it that way. He just said it's not graceful like ballet. We're assuming that because of the other bs comments that he had. Even the "slow clap" at the end could have been sarcastic, but maybe it was sincere? Accusations how someone "actually ment something different" is wrong. Those are our own biases. Same as those guys who had their own biases towards the Wide Boyz! Don't be like them! 🤟
@@androgynousmaggot9389 I think he just sounded a little sarcastic because he was talking to an interviewer, not Tom and Pete. He'd already congratulated them in private, I'm sure.
Still one of the best climbing stories of the modern time. Thank you for this
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah its up there with Dawn wall and Free solo ^^
Pete is one of the funniest people on earth, he doesn't even try to be.
3:9 Ballet isn't "daintily". It just looks like that because ballet dancers are fucking machines who make incredibly painful and hard moves look like it's light as a feather.
Agree! Ballet is incredibly hard work, especially to make it look easy 😊
Right? After he made that comment and then talked about how crack climbing is the brutal art, I was like 'huh... this guy doesn't know shit about ballet and needs to get over himself'
You misunderstood. He never commented on the toughness of ballet.
Loving this, thanks Chris. It's funny how Pete's northern accent was stronger at the time than it is now. Apart from that, Tom and Pete were the same lovable madmen then that they still are today. On a different note, It's been great too to get acquainted with Tom's wife, she's brilliant!
Glad you enjoyed it, yes she's brilliant!
Their accents seem to have merged and met in the middle. All I keep hearing with Pete is, "Shut that gate and keep it shut!" Agree that this is great to watch and lovely to see Tom's wife.
@@charlstice shut t' gate or put wood in t' hole.
This is the stuff of legends, someday there will be tourist tours around the cellar to tell the story of Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker becoming crack climbing legends in a cellar in England, as The Wide Boyz.
Incredible climbing Pete and Tom - great to see the dedication behind the scenes. Talk about sour grapes from Haston...the differences in reaction between the 1st and 2nd ascents says a whole lot....
Wow! I saw the short version some time ago, but this was so much better! What an achievement and so we'll earned!
What I have to admit is, that this "not a true ascend" leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If it'd been what Tom and Pete had wanted and planned, ok, I'd respect that. But other people complaining and putting on pressure seems quite honestly toxic. I'm sorry to say that, but because of obscure "ethics" making other people basically risk their health - heck, even life! - that' (to me) just does not seem right. I am so glad, that it worked out fine in the end, but the enormous achievement should not be shadowed by staying on the safe(r) side.
"focus on performance and not the goal" is my new motto to keep a clear mind during hard ascents :O
Great movie! Great depiction of the tenacity those guys have! The difference between the "old" and "new" and the jealousy when you're getting older...
Imo, tradition and ethics are important and should always be respected! They did the right thing going back! Pete and Tom are the definition of everything trad climbing represents! 🤟
the old guys are some jealous haters, such bad sports
Been waiting to see this movie for years and it was worth the wait. Very stylish and we all know that style is everything.😂
Ha ha that is a long time, glad it was worth the wait!
That was fantastic, i knew Pete and Tom were stacked climbers but i had no idea they were THAT good
Thank you for putting this full version online. An amazing achievement. I laughed out loud at the, uh, grudging applause at 48:06
What a fucking hater that guy is
The wide boys are my spirit animal
Thank you so much for putting the full length out! So much great stuff with Kim that wasn't in the reel rock version, and loved the history of their friendship.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ChrisAlstrin
thank you so much, I wasn't that excited watching a film in a long time
I remember seeing this at reel rock. So nice for having a full length version I didn't know exist! Great watch, thank you.
Hey Dunkler yes I heard that from so many people especially right after the film came out. It was a huge mistake on our end to have a short version in Reel Rock. Live and learn. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@ChrisAlstrin The short from Reel Rock is my favourite from all the the Reel Rocks that I have seen. I would consider it a success rather than a mistake
It's whole new level when you place your gear 👍
Gotta love the dynamic of Pete and Tom
This is such a gem of a film
Tom and Pete and are insanely talented, super inspiring, and laugh-out-loud funny. Thanks for sharing the full version of this awesome film!
So excited to watch!
How cool and supportive is Tom's wife!
Thanks! What a first ascent! Amazing 💪🏽
Excellent. Thank you! 👏🙌❤🔥
This is great! 👏
Thanks for sharing this, amazing and hearth-warming.
What an amazing effort!
great film, great story - thanks for making such a gem
Thank you.
So glad I was able to watch this whole thing. Such a legendary story and so inspirational.
Excellent video loved it 😎
Unimaginable effort, huge reward
this was amazing
Monumental effort, thanks so much for documenting this. What an amazing production! These guys are so inspirational.
Brilliant film and a truly extraordinary athletic achievement by Pete and Tom.
Thank you
Great doc!!
I’ve always wanted to see this since I started following Pete and Tom on RUclips. Thanks for posting it.
Peter is a Freak of nature! Over 20 minutes on a deadhang! Solo roped El Cap! Sick! Best all around climber in the world!
Absolute legends
Wish I could like this video the amount of times I've watched! Such a rawer and better version than the reel rock.
Absolutely incredible. You two are absolute beasts. Always and forever.
thank you!
You're welcome!
The battle to get to the goal. I absolutely love this film!!!❤
Incredible achievement excellently captured! Thank you all involved for letting us in on this phenomenal feat - for free!
I went to our local cinema to see Free Solo when it first came out to document my support and appreciation. I think it's very important to 'vote with your feet' if you want great anything to continue, espescially after the pandemic lull...
Amazing story ❤
Bold is an understatement!!! Power to you Boyz!!!
Loved to see this movie now, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
AWESOME GREAT!
best thing I watched in years. Woooot?
Great to rewatch this! To me it is the most inspiring climbing film. What a journey and what an achievement! Wanna go to US and try that V5 boulder problem to test myself against the one crack that shut down half of the wide boyz. 😈
This is such a beautiful achievement. You can feel their joy in your bones. Absolutely amazing.
Great film-- beautiful story arc-- and even very experience climbers can learn a lot. Interviews superbly done and edited!
Such a great documentation of that experience! It's so inspiring to watch you both conquer so many obstacles throughout your training and to have it lead to your successes in battling Century! It was like it was your calling! I've been watching both of your journeys throughout the years and I just want to thank you both for inspiring, teaching techniques, motivating and just pure entertaining us all. The climbing community truly enjoys and appreciates all that you do. ✌️ and ❤️ my friends near and far!
I have never climbed anything in my life but it's so cool how there's these little niche types of climbing, I love this style in particular "pretty chuffed" right enough 😂
Thanks for making this great movie, showing the power of determination and friendship. And to then share it in this way is extraordinarily generous.
Best regards.
Thank You for watching it.
What an amazing movie!!
Glad you liked it.
Ive just recently got into watching climbing. Found the wideboyz thru toby and then found magnus who i watch mostly because it's mind blowing for me everytime but this has gave me a whole new level of appreciation for these guys and crack climbing. Truly looks brutal to do. Great film!!!
great job boys!
Think Id love to hear Pete on a like ted talk or interview discussing effort and how it works for him and how he works up to apply that amount of effort physically and especially what he thinks about that from a psychological standpoint as well, awesome humble egoless dude
Thank you for releasing this with free access!
Glad you enjoy it!
The bicep curls in the basement offwidth, y'all are absolutely mad geniuses
Great film guys. What a story. Up there with the very best of climbing films.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good effort!
I never got a chance to see the full version! Thanks for uploading this Chris.
Hope you enjoyed it!
This was a fantastic documentary. Thanks so much to you and Paul for making this!!
Excellent climbing film, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks so much for sharing your films. I really enjoyed this one, love the wide boyz.
Glad you like them! I plan to keep uploading more of my work.
@@ChrisAlstrin Good, keep uploading excellent work.
Great documentary of what happened. Not sure how I feel about the reasons for going up the second time. I understand the purity and if they had gone home a second trip would have 100% happened + they were already in form... but it was only worth it because the risks paid off
I kept thinking about how the guys who called them out would feel about it if one of them fell and seriously hurt themselves. I know it was their decision but they literally said they wouldn't have done it without that pressure.
@@MyMmmd Criticism of their initial style was valid. It's a trad climb, not a sport climb. That is just how the game is played.
Super curious how the cams got cleaned in a situation like this!?!? Can't imagine either would want to aid in between sends.
Finally, the origin story of Wide Boys released!
Just love the Tom & Pete thing. Thanks all, inspirational stuff, makes my VS shitshuffles seem a bit pathetic!
Glad you like them! Those two are great.
This was amazing and shouldn’t be free. Thank you Chris Alstrin and Paul Diffley
Hey Dylan I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The movie has been out for close to ten years now. I would have made it free years ago if I had thought of it. I think it's important to showcase our work and let more people enjoy it vs having it buried in my hard drives.
Tunnel at 38:28 is the Green River tunnel on I80 in Wyoming for the curious.
I bought this film back in the day, if I thought it would available for free on youtube one day :p
This is much better than"free solo"🎉
It's funny listening to Kim at 48:23 knowing that they did that ridiculous bridge roof crack.
What's the music playing during their ascents on preplaced gear?
Did you find the music? Also looking
Just turn on the camera, open a bottle of Ardbeg next to him, and let him start talking offwidths
They looked so young
Unreal it's back up!
You bet it is.
@@ChrisAlstrin I'm so glad you got it back up, i've never seen it but i wasnt ready for how good that movie was. I might double feature this with "The Real Thing" on the regs haha!
OMG how much has your voice changed Tom! 😮😮😮
Such deep voices in the early days……,,
39:49 has to be one of my favorite Pete moments ever hahaha
Excellent ! So bolts on off width cracks don't count 🤔
I wouldn't believe that was Pete talking if you just played me the audio
Good effort😂👏
damn, old farts are bitter :D
Great film with some personal touches that make it more special. Such an achievement. My question is how did they get the gear out after doing the route? Hang a rope through the crack and jumar up to each cam?
They back cleaned it. Meaning they climbed backwards and hung on gear when needed
*Unbelievable you got fined for this. Jobsworth's have nothing better to do!*
*Great film!* 😎👍
Couldn't agree more!
Amazing story and a big Kudos for these badass achievments ! But honestly guys, you should start wearing helmets :D
Awesome movie. By the way, does somebody know the song in the intro? shazam didint find it :(
fucken awesome
Does anyone know the width of Century Crack where they were doing the hand and fist jams?
thank god we got crack gloves now
