    After 15 years working at a local boat launch, this is spot on. This needs a part 2 that includes: losing the boat off the trailer, trailer wheel overheating and catching fire, forgetting the parking brake and having car or truck go in, drunk idiots fishing off the dock and complaining about the fish getting scared away, kayakers and canoers cutting the line and starting a fight, etc. 😂

      I used to teach camper and coach owners how to drive their RVs around. Take you camper to an empty parking lot and practice. The only way to ever gain enough confidence to enjoy it is through practice. Buy some traffic cones at a cheap tool place. Go there and just do it. I had owners wives backing a triple axle 5th wheel around a parking lot in circles. They always enjoyed their toys more with that confidence.
      Cheers and enjoy that camper. Some of my best times were working with the people who enjoy them.

    My Dad used to bring a folding chair and an ice chest and watch the launchers on the ramp. It was a pretty wide and busy ramp so lots of opportunity for entertainment.
    One time I saw some guy sitting in his boat, yelling at his wife who was backing up the trailer in to the water. He kept swearing at her, telling her to back in deeper because the boat wasn't floating.
    He forgot to release the ties on the transom of the boat that strapped it to the trailer.

  • @Brad-ku9yu
    @Brad-ku9yu 4 года назад +38

    This was my exact experience the first time I tried backing the trailer in while my dad was in the boat. I was 17 and had used the time driving to the boat launch to smoke a bowl, since it was the only time I could get away from everybody. I tried backing in and I was too high to figure it out. And of course there was an old dude with a beer who had seemed to have been there all day just watching people launch who decided to tease me about it when I gave up. Luckily it wasn't crowded at the time I was the only one there on a 5 lane launch.

    • @ChrisWilliams5605LS
      @ChrisWilliams5605LS 4 года назад +6

      Before you start backing, move your hand to the bottom of the steering wheel. This removes the need for the opposite. You then just move your hand in the direction you want the boat to go.

    You forgot the part when you get the boat in the water, but you forget the plug and then sink the boat.

    You will always hear some very colorful language at a boat launch especially when busy.

    When it comes to backing, grab the bottom of the steering wheel. The 6:00 position turn the wheel. You want the trailer to go. Once it's cocked you follow the trailer around you get lost. Pull ahead. Grab a 6:00 position. Turn the wheel the direction of the trailer to go. I won't practice and you'll be at master back in the trailer.

    My family and I were out for like 8 hours on the boat and I came home with the worst sunburn of my life. That’s the thing about MN, you only see the light of day for half of the year

    Oh, I grew up watching this stuff at the ramps, I wish we had video recorders back then! Some of the stories had to be seen to believe! But I occasionally write about them as they are burned into my psyche. Lol
    My Dad was a commercial truck driver part of his life and taught me how to use my mirrors well for backing. Since I built my first personal boat, I had a boat before i could get a learner's permit or a driver's license. Having a boat first dictated my first vehicle, a pickup.
    43 years of boat ownership, and my current boat is too big to trailer except with a semi truck, I still enjoy occasionally hanging out at a boat ramp for the entertainment, it's free!
    I just have to keep my laughter to a low volume, it hurts men's egos when we women laugh at them.
    Remember guys, if you can't back worth squat you might be like my ex husband. He has depth perception issues...

    The following really did almost happen but for a miracle it went differently than expected:
    A father and 5 year old son were launching a boat. The dad left the truck motor running, the door open, and was about to push the boat off the trailer. All the while the 5 year old had escaped his car seat and was standing at the steering wheel. Next I saw the left blinker go on then the right blinker. Then the windshield wipers came on then the windshield washers started pumping fluid. The dad was struggling with the trailer winch. Then the emergency flashers came on and the radio
    soon was heard. I’m still watching through my binoculars thinking the five year old is about out of things to try when the dad finally gets the boat off of the trailer and returns to the truck cab before his son discovered reverse.
