I think you are an excellent teacher. A lot of brilliant information that I needed to know. Now I'm ready to start my roof on my carport! I can do this!
With a 3 tab, what do you do when you get to the edge of the roof and you only have an inch or two left to cover? You dont want to nail down a 2" strip of shingle. So how would you cut last full shingle in order to have at least 6" of shingle to end the roof edge?
Say you see youre gunna end up with 2” final: Cut a tab off the second last shingle (the one just before the last) just make sure its a straight cut for proper butting, which sets up the final shingle to be a tab + 2”. This way will keep the pattern. You could also cut the last two shingle lengths equal and split that gap but this will break the pattern and probably not what you want. Just get creative and do what you can to get it covered… no wrong way really, just ok and better. Thats what make’s architectural a bit easier to finish off rows, you dont have that water line pattern to maintain

The clearest best explained method i have found. Excellent thank you.
Have you ever considered the starter being cut at a 45 on the end so you don't cover the tar strip?
Thanks so much for sharing your time and experience to help us DIY'ERS.
So. Does his starter strip over hang any or is it flush with the drip edge?

Using your method on the 3Tab…what happens if you get to the right side and you’re short an inch or so or something far less than 6 inches?
Cut a tab off your second to last shingle. Then your final piece on the edge will be much more substantial. You don’t wanna nail on a 1 inch piece
Is there a roofing vocational school where one can enroll to become a skilled roofer?
