    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    Master class in acting and singing. Watch her eyes as she sings so beautifully. You can see and hear every changing emotion……those big, dark, emotive eyes. I’ve heard it said that Judy was a genius and Liza was JUST very talented. I would argue they are both once in a generation talents. Funny, talented, tremendously powerful singers, and kind people. Who could ask for anything more.

    This is a wonderful side of Liza Minnelli that is so very vulnerable & self-contained...This is as beautifully expressing as her more emotive performances. She earned her way in the world of show business & on her own merits.

    This is actually a medley of the ballad section of 'MacArthur Park' and 'Didn't We'. She wasn't the first singer to home-in on the 'After All The Loves Of My Life' part of 'MacArthur Park' and I believe Lena Horne was the first to record a stand-alone version with the likes of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra following suit.

      When feeling the need to correct who may have first decided upon a different interpretation, you cannot omit the creator. The incredible Jimmy Webb. Now I have to find Lena and Tony's versions, the Frank one is a master class of working your best with the best of the best.

    Her acting is absolutely incredible here. Her eye-lines when singing have always blown me away. This was aired a month before her dear mother passed away, I truly truly truly hope Judy was able to watch it and see this very mature and centered, adult Liza perform this… and perhaps even if she didn’t live long enough to see her in Cabaret, she would understand just how incredibly successful Liza’s career was about become in the next 2-3 years.

      Yes I agree Judy was extraordinary and so gifted vocally. Liza has the acting and singing and dancing. She has charisma and a star quality. Lorna can sing, saw her in an off-broadway play yet don't remember her. Met her signing her book, she seemed ordinary. Saw her cabaret show, "Songs my mother taught me,

    Okay am 77, followed Liza's career from her 1rst song/ Broadway play/movie, Carnegie Hall special you name it but this early performance on Ed Sullivan still blows me away! Such emotion, such pizzazz, such interpretation of song, such singing from the the depth of her soul few artists ever reach.. a true treasure always! I'm not being melodramatic..that's just Liza...

    • @ah7910
      @ah7910 Год назад +1

      Slow ballads can’t be the sole material in one’s repertoire. Even in her later career… Liza has kept performing these slower, more centred songs along with “letting loose” as you call it, if you’re interested: ‘Quiet Love’ and ‘Sorry I Asked’ are both later career material and both in the same style as this gorgeous number. Much of her jazz albums ‘Gently’ and ‘Confessions’ are filled with slow songs too.

She gave one of the best live performances I had ever seen. Singing! Dancing her heart out! I was not surprised that she ended up in the hospital 3 days later with exhaustion!
