    I finally sold the 2012 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special (VROD). Today I'm talking about why this flip didn't go quite as planned. Stay tuned to see how much I sold the bike for and what happened to the motorcycle, forcing me to take a big hit on the profit side. Enjoy!

      But if I wasn't a mechanic I probably would have been taking it to someone/shop who could have helped with just finding the leak.

      Hey Jon, on a serious note. Are you still getting my monthly donation? I had screwed up when i first opened it because i somehow started creating my own which I never intended to do, then had to cancel my own Patreon page, just want to make sure I'm still pledging. I was able to look on the patreon page so I think I am?

    Honesty is always the best, so you did right. Me personally, I would have tried to see if it was an easy fix (hose, clamp, ext) first. Then gone from there. Kudos to you for being able to make money selling bikes. Me I can't ever sell anything for more that I paid.

    Props to you for originally buying the bike for super good deal. I happily paid $8,700 for the samebike, year and milage (6 months ago) put with a stage 2 kit.

    Just a heads up, it would have been a easy cheap fix, I had a 2007 night rod. It to was leaking coolant. The problem was the thermostat seized up, which the water pump built up enough pressure that the coolant pushed past the hose on the radiator making it leak. I can't remember how much the thermostat was but keep in mind Harley sales the housing as and thermostat as one piece......yes that's how Harley gouges it's customers. Anyways I don't think it cost more then $60 for it. Replace the thermostat housing tighten up your hoses and problem solved. So you let that bike go for super cheap for an easy fix.q

    Those bras on bikes or cars hold dirt and sand your paint as they move in the wind. That portion of the paint will be prepped for a new paint job!

    If we can assume the bike was laid down, we can assume the leak is most likely at the mounting tab weld. If you try to repair a mounting weld then it will always break again. If you see where the leak is coming from, and it's just a crack or thin spot, then repair is the best option if you know a welder. For $200 you can buy a new radiator and install it yourself. I wouldn't take a hit any greater than $200.

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  4 года назад +1

      The bike had been tipped on the right side, but the leak was on the left. And the leak didn't start until after I had the bike a few months.

    • @ToesCapuano
      @ToesCapuano 4 года назад

      Did the radiator leak when it was running or parked? I only saw footage of a parked leak. I feel like even if the radiator might be leaking from the right side, the fact that it spends so much time parked leaning to the left might deceive a diagnosis of the leak location.

    Depends...in this particular sitch where you're taking a G off the price I'm guessing it wasn't a hose leak, you did a little homework and the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze so I'm going with option 4. If I was on the buying end I'd be happy to get a break and fix it myself so win win. Plus now you don't chance scratching plastics, mess, clean up, runs to the parts store for miscellaneous items not accounted for or worst of all breaking something else because you're not familiar with the job. In a couple more years you'll be able to make a compilation video of cash flashing Mr Pimpalicious...Yeahya what ohhKay!

    Hey Jon, sounds like you came out ok on this, but left money on the table. Circumstances vary, but I think I would have fixed the leak. Generally, on decent bikes most repairs are not worst case scenario. But hey...if you turned a few bucks to your satisfaction and the buyer is happy then you did good. Stay in the hunt. 👍

  • @thejakein7867
    @thejakein7867 4 года назад +2

    I would have fixed it and thrown all the stock stuff back on and sold all the aftermarket stuff separately. Sounds like you're stretching yourself to thin to be in this market to make money. and if your flipping bikes, you should be buying at auction. That's where the real money is. Of course without risk theres little reward.

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  4 года назад

      Yeah, I could definitely do better with selling parts separately when extras come with the bikes. I've probably missed out on thousands from that alone over the years. Generally, I have good enough margins to get by fine on these private party deals. Of course I'm not talking thousands in profits on each bike.

    With something like that coolant leak I would have taken it to the dealership closest to me and looked into the fix even better yet working at a dealership for 7 years I know a few mechanics that would come over and fixed it for the cost of parts and a twelve pack of beer for us to split while he worked on it of course and possibly a pizza depending on how bad the damage was lol
