I think part of the reason he has companions is because he likes that moment of awe and amazement. He's lived hundreds of years seen and done it all, so it must be fun to be reminded how amazing things are now and again.
11 does explain this to Amy Pond in a mini-sode. He tells her that he can't see the wonders of the universe anymore after the universe has become his backyard. But he sees it in his companions' eyes and their awe and wonder.

I love how Jenna Coleman does accents. Her natural accent is subtle Lancashire, which she keeps on for 21st century Clara as well as 21st Century Johanna Constantine in The Sandman. However, in historical roles she alters it a bit to fit what the scene demands. Here she uses an accent which is still rather civilian and casual, but with more notes of the traditional RP accent, as well as a rather pronounced East London accent when she gets agitated. This adds so much personality and fits the role of a servant to a wealthy London family very well. Meanwhile in her role as Lady Constantine in 1782, she ramps the Received Pronunciation up to 100000, which (along with her acting) really makes her feel like a 19th century noblewoman. God, this scene is genuinely amazing from so many different perspectives, but I especially love this scene's subtext. On the surface, this is just another (admittedly very fun) Tardis reveal. Clara is convinced that the Doctor is patronizing her, that he thinks very little of her, that he may even be a bit backward like a lot of people in her time period, saying she's not "sweet" or "little", trying to prove herself an equal. But then the Tardis lights come on with the word "little", after having mocked him (and the box by extension for being so small). She thought the Doctor was chastising her for having aspirations above her "place" by comparing her to the box, but with the realization that the Tardis is so much larger on the inside, she realizes that she was wrong. He was saying she is so much more than she appears to be. This is the kind of writing I miss in Doctor Who these days. If only this had been paid off more by making this version of Clara his companion so she could really grow to be the person she aspires to be, and more. And this is coming from someone who absolutely adored 12's run and the dynamic he and Clara had.
I had to stop watching Dr Who when Whittaker took the role.. not because she a woman, infact I was really excited to see something so fresh and new..., but because the writing was so lazy... I found the show unbearable on so many levels. Boring plots, storylines, aliens, companions, even the Doc had no personality... it was just abysmal. Chris Chibnall as head writer was a terrible decision.

Doctor Who's costume department needs so much more love! Clara's governess dress is so great and accurate even down to the finest details. They occasionally take artistic and budget liberties but costumes are usually only for one episode and it's sci-fi so it's forgivable. @@OverWims No disabled human, it say that's new
@@FlagadossSupreme I literally searched the clip and no it doesn't. He says "okay, that is a first"

Next time you say something, make sure to actually check you are correct first before even bothering to type anything.
These are always my favorite moments in Doctor Who. The first time a companion is introduced to the TARDIS.
“That one’s definitely a first.”
This is why matt Smith is my favorite doctor. His expressions of whimsy. He looked like he was always having so much fun.
this scene is just so iconic
One of the best tardis reveals in the series
One of my favorite scenes. In fact, I named my doctor who podcast "Smaller on the Outside" for that reason 😊
Clara was my favorite. She was the sweetest. I fell in love with her when I was younger. She was truly the most unique and she was the toughest companion. Her exit from the show was done perfectly.
"And it's mine... because I stole it"
"so it's not urs?"
Nah. Sexy stole him.
"BORROWED. I BORROWED it."
@@barnabasjthomas9983I have a few other terms that I feel fit better, tactically acquired, strategic transfer of equipment to alternate locations or S.T.E.A.L., and going off what you said borrowed without returning, I’m open to new terms as well
@@urthboundmisfitpeople keep forgetting that.
That feeling, that you felt in your heart just now, that was hope.
When Bill says "Doctor what?" 12 definitely could've said "well that's a first" to callback this moment
I will never not be disappointed that they didn't do that :(
Because Rose did it first
I miss her so much, by far one of the best doctor companions.
The moment I fell in love with Clara!
Oh I was in love with her when she was in a dalek. I was so happy when she showed up again.
"Smaller on the outside" defined Clara so well, my favorite of The Doctor's companions
"it's dimensionally transcendental!"
...
"ok, that's a new one, I have to admit"
I just loved it when he gave her a key. That's a player move. Works everytime.😊
Doctor Who is the living definition of "I'M GOING TO THE ONE PLACE THAT HASN'T BEEN CORRUPTED BY CAPITALISM...SPACE!"
And time
@@KhanhNguyen-mh5ec yeah
I luv all the Victorian era episodes, esp. this one, the crimson horror, a Christmas Carol, and capaldi's first episode.
Doctor Who's costume department needs so much more love! Clara's governess dress is so great and accurate even down to the finest details. They occasionally take artistic and budget liberties but costumes are usually only for one episode and it's sci-fi so it's forgivable. But when they've got it, they have it down to the finest of details. Better than 95% of pure historical dramas with eye-watering budgets. I had to stop watching them because I kept getting irritated.
That little chuckle he lets out when she's shellshocked, is a reaction to why he loves humans so much, and brings companions with him on his travels. Because he's old, he's already seen a lot of the things in the world.
So the wonder humans show to what he would consider mundane, like the TARDIS, is something he draws great joy in.
Remember my first time in my tardis!👀
THIS is my favorite Clara. I wanted her to be his companion! I grew to like the other one that we got but I liked this one from the beginning... and morned both her and what could have been.
Thats the best doctor they have ever had. And they had many good ones prior to him.
That music will never get old and I love it
Every time the score plays.. goosebumps literal goosebumps
Never forget my first time in a tardis
Know that feeling, when you walk in, and try to take it all in. Loved when they did the Tardis Tour ❤❤
Man that music gets me going every time!
On account of how the tardis canonically works, "smaller on the outside" is technically more accurate than the usual "bigger on the inside"
No matter the form, one thing is always clear. They’re all the Doctor, and the Tardis is always breathtaking
Why is everyone saying The Doctor's next line is "Okay, that's new"? He said, "Okay, that is a first."
THANK U!!!
He did say, “That’s a first!” ....and Clara’s “Smaller on the outside.”, so far, was the only time it was said that way, at least, I think it was! If anyone can confirm this for me, thank you in advance!! 😃👍
@@johnrowley3721 Yes, it was a first. I've seen every episode, all the way back to William Hartnell, and Clara was the first person to focus on the outer size of the TARDIS rather than the inner size.
@@margretrosenberg420 Thanks, Margret! I thought it might’ve been! 😃👍
Clara, my favorite Doctor Who companion.
Absolutely my all-time favorite Companion!
Ahhhhh I love this duo so much! And the Doctor’s face is priceless when Clara says “it’s smaller on the outside”😆😆😆
I finally found something that can relax me. Thank you lady, everything is majestic in that video 🫶
Always will be my faviroute doctor.
