    Everyone needs Bilt Hamber Dynax UC in their garage, such good stuff. Great for brake pipes / unions. Anything exposed to the elements underneath....the list is endless. The straw helps you get it into the tightest spaces. BH Hydrate 80 for rust is a winner too. BH Deox C is a good sheep dip for soaking rusty items in.

    Interesting vid, thanks.
    I'm stuck in the 90's with an Alpine radio cassette 😂
    When I've replaced old aerials I have tied some string to the end so I can feed the new cable back through without dismantling too much of the trim.
    Also your new outer aerial mount seems quite wide. Could you have re-used the one from the old aerial which was smaller?
    ...and finally. I use a Belkin windscreen suction mount for my phone. It's really solid.

    I fitted the same unit in my Mk3 Supra - looks the part and seems to work well, just a shame about the cheap clicky button feel.
    Btw you can use a powered DAB converter/splitter with the FM aerial if the extra aerial gets on your nerves, they work just as well as a dedicated aerial in my experience.

      @@volkswizard OEM+ it's the best way im my honest opinion, I like it because things are easier to reverse if you ever sell on and it's not to the buyers taste but 90% of the time, it always is and usally increases the value of a car. Everything I did to my Mk4 R32 was OEM+ and helpped me to gain a very decent price on resale.
      Looking forward to the next video!

    I love this. I love that things like this exist. Most aftermarket DIN head units are absolutely awful and always have been. Not sure how they went decades with terrible UI and design. I would still also like to have an original version of this head unit and actually be able to play audio cassettes for the authentic experience. 👍🏻

    Brilliant episode on the GTI - love the OEM+ tweaks to bring modern functionality to this classic and I’m sure of your craftsmanship in wiring this in whilst removing obsolete cabling as I’m a bit OCD about the original appearance- I noted the gearshift gaiter cover and wondering if it’s original as just looks bulkier than I remember?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Год назад

      Thanks Malcolm. Yes the gaiter is leather and aftermarket, IIRC the original were a thin artificial fabric and looked tired very quickly. Leather lasts better but if you aren't careful it can restrict the shifting action (say it was really thick). Seems OK so will live with it. Early cars had a rubber concertina boot the like of which you only see on commercial vehicles these days !

  • @andrewmcivor42
    @andrewmcivor42 Год назад

    I had no idea you could get a period head unit with modern functionality - very cool indeed!
    It looks the business - I guess the compromise with the period look is the miniscule display, but I guess you'd get used to that. Not really an issue if you're using your phone as a source (we're probably spoilt these days with the huge touchscreen displays we're used to).
    I take it the Bremen has RCA outputs for connecting to an external amplifier? Looked like it from the video.
    I'm not sure I could stick with the "OEMplus" philosophy, as I seem to remember the front speakers in particular are mounted in a ridiculous location (on top of the dash). From what I remember if my Dad's 2x GL mk2s, they sounded awful - maybe that was just his music though!
    When the Mk2 was still fairly current (showing my age there), I used to see aftermarket ICE installations with speakers in the front door pockets (think there's a large pocket with a cover at the bottom, towards the front?), but I don't think I'd want to damage the door cards either, given the Mk2 is now a classic car!
    I do like what you've done there - a tasteful, but functional mod👍. Bet you wish the Mk2 8v GTi had the "bee sting" ariel of the 16v though! Did you consider that as a mod at all?

    This really took me back to the 1980's when I used to work for an auto electrical component distribution company. They were a Blaupunkt stockist as well as a fully approved installer. Blaupunkt have always been renowned as quality and fitted as standard to a lot of OEM vehicles. We used to get quite a lot of nice cars in for install too, like Cosworth Sierras and Escorts, 2.8i Capri's, RS Turbo's, Golf GTi's etc and they were special times for me.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Год назад +1

      A lot of people have said that, and I did look for crossovers that got the FM aerial to do DAB too but figured there would be some compromise somewhere, probably in the reception which you'd only find out later and you'd have to strip it all down and start again to install a DAB specific one. Basically played it safe with belt and braces :)
