Location: Beilinson Hospital, Israel, Neurosurgery Ward
    Setting: Hospital Room # 14
Waking up after surgery, I expected a battle-but not this kind of battle. It’s like someone hit “reset” on my life, and suddenly I’m relearning everything, only now as an adult who knows what it once felt like to move, think, and push forward without a second thought. Every action now feels like starting from scratch, like a game I thought I’d mastered but now have to play from level one.
Today’s episode is about those “baby steps” in three critical areas: Motor Skills, Cognition, and Psychological well-being. Each demands a different kind of mental toughness, each is humbling in its own way, and each asks me to dig deeper.
Motor Skills: Relearning How to Move
Movement-something we all take for granted. Now, every step is deliberate, each motion a small victory. My hand, my legs, even my balance-it all needs to be rebuilt. There’s no skipping ahead; I’m learning to take it slow, one step at a time.
    Cognition: Piecing Together My Thoughts
Mental clarity is no longer a given. From memory to focus, every thought feels like solving a puzzle that used to be so simple. The process of thinking, remembering, piecing things together-it’s exhausting, but I’m working with what I have, slowly rebuilding that sharpness, little by little.
Psychological Well-Being: Facing Vulnerability and Finding Humility
This is the hardest part: adapting to a “new normal.” I’m used to strength and forward momentum, but now I have to slow down and face my own vulnerability. Mental toughness here means humility-accepting that I’m at the beginning, and knowing that this is exactly where I need to be.
I’m learning to appreciate the small things-like making it to the bathroom on my own. These days, that’s a victory in itself.
