Did a good job explaining each one but need to make clear we all are on the spectrum of each of those 5. We're not one more than the other. We're a sum of the parts. Not identifiable by just one or two of those traits in the big 5

    • @elisapavez2625
      @elisapavez2625 3 года назад +16

They're explaining the model, not saying they agree or disagree with it. Also, as always, things are most complex than people care to explain, this kind of "models" are just a way to make it easier to understand reality. It's a given that that's not all there is to it. If you start by saying, "things are just too complex for us to reduce them to X", you wouldn't get anywhere.

This video completely misses the point of the Big Five Personality Traits. I think condensing these traits down into one singular caricature [for each extreme] is misguided and a poor representation of what the BFPT actually tries to measure. It's more of a spectrum where people can be more or less open, conscientious, extroverted, agreeable, or neurotic. I don't know how you would condense it into a five minute video and a metaphore, but it's definitely not this way.

A decent introduction. However, it is too simplistic to describe "traits" as if they are types. The difference between the Big 5 traits and Myers-Briggs style types is that five traits are an interacting complex of 5 spectra which can be further subdivided into 10 aspects. Myers-Briggs types, on the other hand, are more of a fixed set of characteristics... which erroneously leads to a simplistic view independent of the situation. The unique situation causes the complex interactions of traits in which the personality will emerge. To think in types rather than traits is vulnerable to false dichotomies and/or the binary bias.

Big Five is not the one personality a person has but all 5 on different %tages. So instead of being 100% neurotic or 100% openness, it does not mean that other traits they have are 0%. Instead all traits are from 0-100% and you are not fixed on being only 1 personality as video portrays, but rather all 5 of them on a different scale.

I feel like this can exist in smaller groups (like when people split up) but when groups tend to be smaller they eliminate factors that exist but find not worth the companionship. And with that being said I also feel like individuals can possess multiple traits to compensate for the lack of an individual who would possess a new dynamic or even trait to the situation that may not seem desirable. Your experience hints at what Big 5 actually means! This video is confusing... please do not think that a separate persona for each trait accurately represents the Big 5 model. You are multiple traits, all of them, all at the same time. For example, you can be highly neurotic and highly conscientious at the same time, and your neuroticism will shape the way in which you are conscientious. Conscientiousness is misnamed; it doesn't actually refer to the emotion of *caring*; rather it is a catch-all term referring to a person's organizational and attentional abilities/skills/habits/preferences. The video portrays Conscientious girl acting out of "concern", and the artist always draws her with a frown. If someone feels emotional concern and worry which drives them to organize, manage, and check things, they are both conscientious and neurotic. Therefore Conscientious girl is not a pure model of conscientiousness - she represents at least two traits, maybe more!

Very beautifully designed video, though I have to make one correction concerning the content! I'm a psychology student and the model says that each individual differs in quantity but not in quality regarding the five traits. This means that everyone is (to a degree) Open, concientous, extraverted, agreeable and neurotic.

    Pirate-1: opposite to neuroticism.
    Pirate-2: opposite to openness.
    Pirate-3: opposite to extravertism.
    Pirate-4: opposite to consciousness.
    Pirate-5: opposite to agreeableness.
Let me know if there is a mistake..

I'd imagine it would be far more useful to describe people as sets of skills in different situations than personality types. After all our personality changes based on what kind of childhood we have for example. Similarly we act different in certain kind of situations.
Someone could be very shy and introverted with strangers but open and extroverted with people they know. Some other person may be an extrovert but due to strict and disciplinary parents they could be extremely closed and nervous.
The issue I am trying to showcase here is that in my mind a personality is a set of skills and genes. So when people take the big fice personality test they tend to see the results as rigid descriptions of themselves. But instead if you treat the big five just as skillset and learned behaviours then you also know you can change them. The nervous person could learn to control her feelings but she doesn't know how. Just like the agreeable person doesn't know how to set limits or the introvert doesn't know how to interact.
For example as we grow up we learn all kinds of coping methods. When we get older we may start to think that our coping mechanisms are our personality when in fact it is a learned behaviour that could also be extremely harmful.

I relate most to the first two. Open and conscientious. I'd be excited to explore the new island and learn a thing or two (a bit scared and worried) but at the same time I'd be thinking up an escape route and trying to keep everyone in control / support people.

1,Which of the five people in the video who were stuck on an island best sums up your personality? Why?
Well base from my perspective and observation prior to the video, I feel like i'd resonate more with either NORA or ODELIA depending on the situation, Nora because im an emotionally inclined person and if im lost and stress or anxious on a predicament, it usually doesn't end well and I start to overthink and my mind gets filled with scrambles but all I need is time to process and compose myself hence why here enters ODELIA, I empathize with her because upon breaking down (my coping mechanism especially when im exasperated) I would instantly think objectively and set aside the emotions that I just spilled out (since its already done) then i'd take it as an opportunity to learn and know my mistake that next time All I need is to let out all of my grudges until I calm down, let mtself feel what it needs to feel then afterwards immediately proceed to do what is needed and view it as a lesson learned type of situation in order to grow, IN CONCLUSION I am both Subjective(NORA) and Objective (ODELIA) and knowing that I am capable of such makes me feel powerful somehow since I have a sende of control and accountability for my actions..
    2. Which among the big-five theories do you believe the pirates on a pirate ship exhibit? Make a personality comparison between them and Odelia, Claire, Niel, Albert, and Nora.
My answer is purely based from what I personally feel is an affiliation of that big five personality theory, and these are the following:
    Pirate 1:
    Opposite of neuriticism(NORA)
-Because in the video it was stated that pirate 1's personality is well composed or emotionally stable and calm or relaxed, clearly the opposite to what was described to our character NORA since according to the video she is easily stressed
    Pirate 2:
    Opposite of extroverts (EMILE)
Now for this one, it was mentioned that emile is an extrovert type of person who is very joyful all the time and likes to socialize while for pirate 2's description being easily furious and is not willing to listen then to me, it immediately portrays as an individual who has socializing issues hence why this is my outcome for this two.
    Pirate 3:
    Opposite of conscientious(CLAIRE)
This is the case for both of the character because as we all know, base from the video CLAIRE has initiative and is the one willing to do and take note of the necessary precautionary measures and crucial tasks or perhaps take charge in organizing everyone due to the complicated situation in which is why I afiliated her with pirate 3 since to me pirate 3's personslity trait is that he is not much if a critical thinker unlike claire and thinks that just because a situation is too hard to comprehend he immediately assumes that giving up is the only option.
    Pirate 4:
    Opposite to aggreable (ALBERT)
Moreover for ALBERT and pirate 4 I afiliated them both simply because of how they seem to contrast eachother, ALBERT is an individual who puts others needs before his and does care in someones well being while being kind aswell, and pirate 4 is well, simply the opposite. He only cares for his own needs and is too focused on what benefits him only (for instance, only putting consideration in finding the key to his treasure chest)
    Pirate 5:
    Opposite of openness (ODELIA)
Pretty much self-explanatory reagrding with their description stated in the vid, the pirate 5 or the captain is
Too hyper focused on 1 thing only in which he used too (that being about their boat) and does not consider in leaving any open room for new experiences as if its pollarizing while clear is blatantly the opposite she always finds new opportunities to grown and learn and always sees situation with a silver lining and positivity
    3. Present this in class on Thursday.

These personalities are like ingredients or spices. No single ingredient makes a personality. It’s always a combination of more or less of one ingredient and one flavor that makes the difference in each the dish. The question is what constitutes the ingredients (fundamentals) and what the spices (accents.)

It's a good interdiction to the big 5. I think any one wants a more detailed look into it Jordan Peterson has a lot of material on this subject. I do know that in psychology it's one of the more sound theories. It doesn't explain everything about an individual, but does account for some of the variables of a individual's consciousness and perception of reality and Identity. Good work in my opinion.

The influence of culture is a very complex system, there are external and internal elements, including not only genetic but also emotional experiences.
It is important to learn about your possibilities but also about your blockages, where they come from and what impact they have on future decisions. I notice one thing in my account, although we are just starting out, that knowledge scares people, they prefer to watch "bouncing boobs" than face knowledge, such a case is the episode about childbirth, many women struggle with the topic of pregnancy, sometimes with the decision to have a child and sometimes with the effects after birth. There are many myths surrounding this topic, which we debunk in our discussion. Despite this, it does not arouse any interest, although the topic is important because everyone was born once.
Welcome, it's worth turning on the English translation and I'm curious about your opinions.

Organizer and agreeable are needed in that situation. Necrotic is us all. As for those two ships: the first would stop and take notes on their experience. The pirates would plunder whatever resources they got and may even put the islanders out of their misery while at it. It all depends on how many agreeable people you got in your group. They can always elect another leader to get things done.

High quality video as always Sprouts but I really miss the emphasis that a person is analysed for ALL parameters.
You don't just have a conscious person, you would have a person who is for example:
    1) slightly lower than average on openness
    2) noticably higher in consciousness
    3) low in agreeableness
    4) slightly higher in neuroticism
    ..all based around a norm

    • @sprouts
      @sprouts  5 лет назад +5

Hi Pikmania, thanks for the feedback. I can totally empathize with your critique. A character who is showing a natural mix of all traits would have been more natural, and thats how I started writing my script too. But then I realized its gonna be really complicated to explain each trait itself if they are interconnected in one personality. Also, how not to be bias then? I know lots of artists who are really open, are highly neurotic and low in consciousness- but that combination of traits is a very subjective experience of mine. And not a reliable one, since openness usually doesn’t go with neuroticism. You see how complicated it gets? So I decided to go for the representation of each trait alone. But if the request is high I might write an extended version ;)

    • @ThePikmania
      @ThePikmania 5 лет назад +1

@@sprouts thanks for your detailed response. You seem to really love storytelling which I think can be a good way to introduce an idea emotionally which is powerful.
It's probably more fun too than just a bulletchart of facts. The later one has the advantage of being more precise and faster.
I think that the 5 personality traits are relatively easy to grasp so maybe one scene would have sufficed. That would probably requiere a different scenario.
Maybe show the advantages and disadvantages of each characteristic in a job environment and for relationships?
You could use two persons who have a mixture of the traits. The traits are corelated to each other but still there probably exists a person for every possible combination. Your impression of your artist friends is probably right, maybe you can change one trait like from introversion to extraversion or from low to high conciousness to make it less stereotypical, artists like these definitely exist too :D
Wish you a nice day and success with your channel
