What Happens To North Korean Defectors After They Escape

- More than 1,000 North Koreans try to escape the country every year. They risk being killed, imprisoned, or trafficked, as they escape through China, Mongolia, and different regions of southeast Asia. This is Yeon Mi Park. She escaped North Korea when she was just 13 years old.

They shouldn’t be called defectors they should be called survivors
They defected from the regime. Hence defectors
They should be called survivors? Yeah. But also How bout we call them people.
Jason Stacey yo I crossed the boarder from Mexico to the US, guess I’m a survivor now

Yep and lived as a slave for 2 years.
"I feel like my crime was being born on the wrong side of the river." Heartbreaking. She has faced and overcome things no 13 year old should have to face. Enjoy your freedom, Ms. Park, you have more than earned what so many take for granted.

Yeah I'm very lucky for being from the Middle East

Her English is far better than most South Koreans I know and she possesses a level of survival and street skills that South Koreans her age will never achieve. I hope she stops seeing herself as a 2nd class citizen.
Thats because they teach you English in North Korea.
She was from an upper-class North Korean family with many privileges. After her father was caught for illegal trading state steel (which is scarce in NK), and given a long prison sentence, the family lost their wealth and their source of income.
Her videos are all over the internet. She got the business mind from her father.
Her English may be better than South Koreans but it means nothing in South Korea. English is not the main language in that country.
That not, but it does help her when she is doing her international defector shows.

Narata ok, I know this is RUclips, but can’t you keep religion to yourself? Not everything is about prayers and beliefs. You can’t just pray to get out of stuff or whatever, it takes hard work. And anyways, not everyone believes in Jesus. You’re saying that he’s the center of attention, he is the savior. The North Koreans escaped by themselves. Jesus didn’t magically teleported them out. It’s not Jesus. People have their own beliefs. If you only rely on Jesus, you won’t get so far. Delete your comment please. It’s these religious ones that I hate the most. Hey, that's better than Trump's fascism !!
All kinds of discrimination exists every part of the world. People tend to get too emotional about a specific case.
@@JacktheGreatandPowerful That's what YOU think. There is a difference in the level of discrimination that is faced. She was new and alone in South Korea with a traumatic past and an uncertain future. She was given the South Korean citizenship yet still she was treated like an outsider. Instead of welcoming her with open arms, South Koreans turned their back on her. She got out of hell and escaped to heaven, only to be told that no one wants her there and making her feel like a burden. It left her to think whether she should just go back to hell, because the heaven that she came to, happens to be more hell than the hell that she came from. @@signumxmagnum But she had to make the difficult choice to escape, and then to endure the hardships of travelling for two years, and even after that, to acclimate to life in South Korean scoiety.
@@signumxmagnum Your argument implies that freedom is only given to you by your country's government.
But the freedoms she mentioned are our government's basic human rights. So a government "giving" her freedom is wrong. Its something she should of always had.
So she fought for her freedom(s).
@@signumxmagnum If my own government gives me "freedom". That implies they can also take it away as they are the ones who "gave" it to me. Which they can't. It isn't made that way. My government is made to protect my freedoms and has no power to take them away.
(And the "freedoms" I'm talking about is the freedoms she mentioned she fought for. Like what clothes she can wear, where she can travel, what she can listen to, etc. These types of freedoms are inate human freedoms. Unjust governments took those away from her.
