Y N it can also be very dangerous. If NK finds out her family and her escaped north korea,, 3 generations of her extended family in NK can be publicly executed etc etc
“when i was seven years old i saw my first public execution” “a lifeless woman lied on the ground” “we are waiting to die” this is NOT ok. we need to help these people!
Yes Yes. We really need to help these people. Here in Brazil we have NGOs and foundations that help immigrants, but their funds are being cut by the president... I think the US situation should be almost the same, so it makes the process of helping us free from this oppressive consumerism system we live in, and the release of these people, easier.
The thought of the mother and her emaciated child that no one would help and walk past brings tears to my eyes. I can't imagine a world where people can walk past a child in this situation, and it shatters my heart to think of this poor baby losing the only hope he had.
For the people saying no one is talking about her accent it dosent mean specifically the people in this comment section its referring to people in general who make fun of other who can't speak a language very well.
She speaks English really well for someone who comes from North Korea where they don't teach you English. She spoke Korean most of her life and then had to learn Chinese, and now she has learned enough English in the past few years while attending South Korean university to give a speech in English on TED stage. She must be a brilliant person.
And she also had to learn South Korean because the Korean used in the North is actually a lot more different than you'd think. The two countries have been separated for years and in that time their languages have developed differently.
I’ve read her book in german, it was titled „black Magnolia“ and definitely left me thinking. From fleeing to Chine all by herself to bringing her family over the border to South Korea, this Woman is so brave and strong. She met so many people along the way who helped her, yet it was also her quick thinking and creativity that helped her survive. I really hope that more people talk about her
She just made me realize I have absolutely no right to complain about all my stupid problems, they're literally nothing. (Edit: Guys, I didn't say my problems don't matter at all. Obviously we all have problems and they're not irrelevant. I said I don't have the right to complain about all my stupid problems, like getting too much homework or having to get up too early in the morning, etc. Compared to this, those are nothing. Nobody likes getting too much homework, but it's really not that bad. Some people are in way worse situations than I am, and instead of complaining about these small things, we should be grateful for what we have. For example I often complain about the smallest things, but in reality I have a family, a house to live in, enough food, I can go to school, I don't have to fear for my own or my loved ones' lives, and compared to others I have a really good life. Obviously I have my own problems just like everyone else does, and they do matter, but I shouldn't complain about all those small things that I find slightly uncomfortable. I hope you could understand what I was trying to say and I hope you have a nice day💜)
your problems is something. plenty of homeless people freeze in winter. sk has greater problems than nk. sk is so immoral that majority of the people have cosmetic surgery and the country's gene pool is being destroyed. everyone is turning into crooked faces.
guest guest south korea absolutely does NOT have greater problems than north korea. one is a flourishing economic powerhouse with amazing allies and a strong world presence, the other is suffering through famine/militant life/homelessness/and exposure of constant propaganda under the rule of a stifling regime. they are not the same.
As a North Korean Defector, I am really grateful many of you guys are interested in North Korean issues and people. Please keep supporting for Defectors.
It is heartbreaking what is happening there. The first person I heard from N. Korea is Yeonmi Park. Her story stunned me, esp. the way of thinking there and level of indoctrination. Though some were saying in the comments that she contradicts herself and they question her story. Still trying to figure that out.
I read her book "The girl with seven names" and it changed me completely. I really hope one day I can say thank you to her for exposing this, and for her great efforts and hard work in helping others. I will never take anything for granted in my life again, and I do wish her family, Brian included, that they will live on prosperously. And I will do what I can to also aid in helping North Koreans. Wonderful woman, and a huge Bravo to her.
That's very risky. Could've been an undercover agent working for NK. By using reverse psychology, saying " I'm helping NK people " and the lady then reacting such a way, that it reveals her affiliation of NK.
Don’t diminish your problems. She had hers and you have yours. You don’t compare happiness so why would you compare sadness or pain? You genuinely can’t compare her experience with yours but it doesn’t t mean that your experience is not valuable
Jason Stenglein and I meant it... I really did. When people tell themselves than there’s someone who’s going through worst they are just pushing the problems away instead of healing them. Accepting them and acknowledging them is the only way forward in life. Be safe and happy!
This makes me more thankful that i have a roof over my head, food to eat, my own freedom and rights and not having to starve all day without any electricity. Im glad she escaped
So true. It's pretty easy to take for granted everything we have. Everything. This woman is so fortunate to escape such a morally bankrupt and decimated place. Just even going outside for a hike and having time to see nature and the world in general would be impossible.
For everyone commenting about her accent. This woman is stronger and smarter than most of you. She speaks Chinese, most likely multiple dialects, Korean, English, and who knows what other languages. She is a living legend for what she went through. This woman has all the features I would look for in a wife, smart, cunning, brave, self reliant, beautiful, and strong. Everyone needs to read her book!!!! “The Girl with Seven Names” she goes into so much more detail and you learn how truly devastating and difficult this journey was for her. It’s heartbreaking but shows how strong she is and how dedicated she is to her family. She is an incredible person
My friend from school escaped from North Korea when she was two. She made it to the border of China when (according to her mother) she fell down and started crying. Her mother was afraid they would get caught and did what she had to do. She covered her mouth with a napkin until she stopped crying and was on the verge of passing out from lack of oxygen. Her mother then carried her the next 10 miles to people in China who got them on a flight to the US. The flight was to ship dogs to a shelter in Maine. So her and her mother were inside a giant crate holding about ten small puppy dogs, a big bag of food and one of those water bottle things that hamsters have. The flight was 20 hours because they had to stay in the crate for an extra while until it was unlocked. The pilot of the plane (an American) was shocked, but after sharing their story, agreed not to tell anyone. He even gave my friend one of the puppies that didn’t find a shelter. Her mom had a friend in Maine who escaped before and was the one who contacted the people in China to arrange for helping them sneak onto the flight. They lived together a while before my friend and her mom could live by themselves. Now she’s in my school, and everyone loves hearing her story.
Why isn't anyone talking about the kind stranger?... She didn't name him..but if he see this video by chance. He would be glad remembering what he did and how that specific help he did to her had changed her life.
after this ted talk, he contacted her since they lost contact during the chaos. she introduces him and even shares a few pictures in her most recent interviews. They are in contact now. Also she learned that he has helped a lot of north koreans.
I know I'm 6 years late, But to the stranger in Laos who helped this person and her family, Thank you, we need more people on the world like you! And to the people trying to escape North Korea, good luck.
Unfortunately the way they're brought up, their education, and their separation from the outside world don't allow them to see that what they're living isn't normal. Most of them treat Kim like a god and they would never leave. In order to see change there needs to be interference from a big power abroad.

Just google the name of your town and voluntary service for inspiration how you can do something against suffering!
It's so strange, because when I was little, I lived in Dalian, a Chinese state so close to North Korea that I could see the cities on the other side of the river. I was only five, and I find it so shocking knowing that a country that was suffering so much was right under my nose.
Maddie Mohos Dalian is not a state but a city of Liaoning province of China. I don't think it could be North Korea you saw on the other side of the sea since Dalian is not that closed to North Korea. The city you saw on the otherside of the sea was probably Yantai, which is a city of Shandong province. Dandong , another city of Liaoning province, is the one she was talking about. There is a river called Yalujiang on the border and actually I used to be there once. A lot North Koreans are livng and working there illegally with Chinese families' help. I am very sorry for her but I can't agree that it sounds like Chinese fault to send them back to their own country. I think it wasn't that hard for her because Chinese and Korean have a lot of similarities, which probably made it way easier for her to learn than for a westener
In her book she says that her father forced her to learn Chinese characters growing up. She said it saved her life because when she was trapped in China she had to learn Mandarin to survive, and so she had a head start because she knew a lot of the characters. She also couldn’t leave her Aunt and Uncles house without them until she learned, for fear of being caught because she didn’t know the language, so she dedicated her life to studying the language for quite a while so that she could leave the house on her own safely.
It really depends on your native language, since its easier for a japanese? to learn chinese. If anything, it's more impressive that she learnt english despite her access

She speaks English really well for someone who comes from North Korea where they don't teach you English. She spoke Korean most of her life and then had to learn Chinese, and now she has learned enough English in the past few years while attending South Korean university to give a speech in English on TED stage. She must be a brilliant person.
They teach Britsh English in N.K. schools. It is mandatory.
learning english by yourself is easy af you dont have to be 'brilliant'
Zeynep Terzi
No, learning any language by yourself can be difficult.
Grace Lee nah she sucks
And she also had to learn South Korean because the Korean used in the North is actually a lot more different than you'd think. The two countries have been separated for years and in that time their languages have developed differently.

I am not religious but that man just got a pass to heaven
If only it wasn’t a fairy tale.
@@youtubecomments5951 what is a fairy tale? The story in the video or the Torah/Bible/Qur'an. If it is the latter then don't say that because you may start an argument.
Macaroon_Nuggets obviously I was talking about the pass to heaven. Like all religions are either fairy tale like or evil. But all the same. Just bullshit

can't believe that this video is here for 10 years & i did never watch it till this morning thank u miss Hyeonseo lee ... what an inspirational start of my day !!
My heart goes out to the North korean people.
So many of my family members were stuck there. It was disgusting how so many Americans voted Kim Jong Un "as a joke" for 2020. They wouldn't do that with Hitler or somone similar. But would to Kim Jong Un. In America, people should really learn more of Eastern affairs
Similar things are happening in China as well. We can't pretend it isn't happening. I have a feeling in 50 years we're gonna look back and realize we really screwed up in not doing enough, like we did after the segregation period.
Same i really feel bad for them
Especially the leader, Kim Jong Un!

One day the whole world will celebrate North Korea's freedom😩

He was a very kind angel indeed
I know what you meant with your comment but the thought of an actual angel withdrawing money from his heavenly ATM machine is just too funny to me :D :D

Got chills. She and her family are very very brave.
And here I was feeling sad because I didn't get First Class Honours in my bar exams.
This made me realise that I have a lot to be thankful for.

You're probably already doing this, but I suggest you use your law degree to advocate those in need, to be the beacon of hope and light in their life and to progress human civilisation free from corruptive governance. With a law degree comes the knowledge and power that transcends broken systems, helping those attempting to seek justice in an unfair world.
I’ve been trying to learn Chinese language myself and let me tell you it’s really *hard* language. She’s so smart.
keep it up learning Chinese!加油哦你可以的,华语是有点难 但是只要你抓住那个基础 就很容易了
It’s the hardest language on earth 😂
I think it wasn't that hard for her because Chinese and Korean have a lot of similarities, which probably made it way easier for her to learn than for a westener
Frosteh Snowflake
English is probably the hardest language to learn.
Mandarin is the hardest language she learned it with no tutor. She is great.
It really depends on your native language, since its easier for a japanese? to learn chinese. If anything, it's more impressive that she learnt english despite her access
What makes mandarin a difficult language is the kanji, and not the grammar. Korean native speakers will easily learn mandarin!
@@mariachristymomongan9444 mandarin words are actually called ”汉字” or “han zi”in pinyin. “Kanji” is the Japanese equivalent.

This left me in tears. I can't believe how someone has to endure something like that in this day and age. It made me realize how fortunate I am to be born in a country and in a family where I can live in freedom and comfort. This made me think twice about the next time I might complain about something so trivial.,.
Silvy Sato Cherish your freedom because someone might steal it from you. Most people, especially in mainland China, still don't have that freedom you have.
Silvy Sato You are lucky, I am lucky too, as a canadian I enjoy freedom that some people (increasingly the american people) don't get to enjoy anymore, or never did.
+Silvy Sato Was this a rhetorical question or are you that ignorant?
+Silvy Sato WAHHH
Yes, many of us don't realize how BLESSED we really are! Myself included. The moment I catch myself on my pity pot, I watch videos like this. Makes me sick that people suffer like this as their own "leaders" have toilets made of gold (true story!).
She is so brave and deserves all the praise.

She is a remarkable woman! Her struggle to get out of NK is true for every defector I learned. There is a book titled “Escape from Camp 14”by Blaine Harden. After I finished listening to the audio book version, I couldn’t sleep that night. And of course there’s the story of Yeonmi Park that brought so much tears in my eyes. There are many other stories about defection from NK gulag. They break my heart. Can somebody provide information on how anybody can contribute to the organization helping the NK?
