In Afghanistan, you could also wind up on a FOB, living in a military style barracks. This going to a latrine 200 feet away in the freezing cold or extreme heat. And who can forget incoming rockets on occasion.100 K made it worth it thou.Dangerous environments can pay high.

I agree, the pay in Afghanistan helped me pay all my debts and build a solid dividend stock portfolio
It was worth the dangers to me
Made for some great memories too haha

I just received my IT degree, but I don’t have any experience or certifications. I was wondering what would be a good field for me to break into while I’m working on my certifications. I was thinking seriously about HR because I was a navy recruiter for almost four years. I primarily worked as an Operations Specialist. I appreciate the information you are putting out, it’s really informative.

You are in a top notch position
Military background and a computer science degree
I would get your CompTIA security plus certificate which is needed for all government IT jobs
You can think about a variety of contractor jobs … but what about IT officer positions?
      Active and reserve

@@RetireandGo I thought about trying the officer route. It's been nearly 12 years since I served, but I worked in the prison system for nearly 8 years after I left the navy. I left as a lieutenant. I'm 40 now. It's something that I have not ruled out. My GPA is not that great though. I have some materials for Security+ that I can study. I was just looking for something to do in the meantime while I study. I appreciate the response.

Hello, I’m an American expat and I’ve been abroad for about 17 years now. I’be been here in the UAE now for the past 6 years. I’ve taught ESL for the most part. Are there any overseas contracting jobs for expats who know cultural/languages?

Can you share your thought on shorter contract like 6 month contract ? I want to apply for an IT position oversea but working irregular hours for 1 year might be too much for me. I do have asthma so I don't know if that would be an issue living in the Middle East.

    • @RetireandGo

There are three and six month contracts with companies. Sometimes they involve replacing someone who is on emergency leave. For this reason, get your resume with your interest on short term contract only into the hands of several companies

The weather here in the Middle East can be too hot for people. When I first arrived from Kuwait to the UAE I would get dried blood in my nose. That’s how hot it would get. So just be careful if you do come.
