  • Japanese women have been fishing in the sea for 2,000 years and have been part of the Japanese cultural heritage for quite some time as well. Known now as Ama or “sea-women”, these ladies have been recognized for their importance in the development of Japan after the Mikimoto Kokichi discovery and unique production of cultured pearls in 1983.
Mikimoto is now one of Japan's most famous jewelers and a world-renowned pearl company. Mikimoto dedicated a gorgeous and unique museum where it all began named: The Mikimoto Pearl Island. And to celebrate the amazing courage and work of past Ama divers, Mikimoto holds regular demonstrations of Ama divers at work and invited us to grab unique footage of the divers while in their traditional white swimwear.
While the number of Ama divers has plummeted, they still exist in a few places in Japan like Ise Shima (Mie).
