fuel problem with 2006 Volvo VNL, D12 engine.

- As shared on JustAnswer.com, I am having problems with this truck trying to die on me. It's like the electrical signal to the injectors gets confused, and the truck catches itself, then comes back to normal idle. Problem is, it happens about 4 times a minute... It does this only at idle, anything up and above idle it's fine... Any thoughts?
I had to add fuel to my fuel / water separator bowl once a month, fuel kept dropping. At next filter change I found the mechanic had hand tightened the primary filter. I was able to remove it without a filter wrench. Also had my truck cut off on a state scale once when the rubber o-ring gasket fell off the bowl cap at a fuel stop when I added some fuel additive to the bowl. I used a plastic sandwich bag over the cap to get me to a dealer to get a new bowl filter with o-rings. I save my old o-rings since that happened.
My truck runs on a cummins isx & was having the exact same problem. At first I thought it was either my injectors or my egr valve. It actually ended up being the turbo & I had to replace it.
I had that problem on my 06 VHD VED 12 one and that’s the egr issue. You can fixed it like starting the engine not in idle but pressing a littler the gas pedal. Todo beget away with it as long as the engine doesn’t looses power when egr must be replace it.
It’s air in the system. Mine did that after a pm. They went back in tighten all filters
Could be number of issues ,black smoke egr valve white egr cooler leaking. My 2006 i found several fuel issues over time. One was simple 20 cent o ring on the fuel control back of ecu on engine little screw off caps.Or fuel filters installed incorrect and leaking air or mechanic did not reach up in tighten inlet before winding it on. or glass fuel filter check valves been put in upside down..
I actually had this problem few weeks ago. Mine is 07. The problem is the EGR. I was also getting little bit of power loss. Once I took care of the egr, problem solved.
Yup.. deleted all mine D12 and Egr cooler. The whole nine. Returned it and that mfk keeps up with the 12.7 60 series
I did my whole fuel system and still got air in it how do you get air out the system

I have a D12 A that is driving me up the wall. I have replaced the inline non-return valve from the tank, the primer pump, feeder pump & replaced the injector copper sleeves, but still getting air in the system. Any advise on what next to try. it runs for a few minutes then eventually dies down. We bleed again then starts and same again. Fuel coming from the return is very little it is literally trickling out.

Alan your idle problem was it egr's bad or EGR cooler or was it something else I have same problem would like get info from you

Its a fuel supply pressure problem, Run Volvo filters only on the spin on fuel filter, my D12 did the same thing, plus on your water separator fuel filter make sure you took out the O-ring that they put in the hole when they ship the new fuel filters to the dealership , I seen a guy forget to take that O-ring out and his D12 ran that way as well , Volvo fuel filters have 25 microns, all other fuel filters have five microns there for when you use other brands of fuel filters you starve the truck of fuel causing it to run rough like you seen in that video
So that rubber on the bottom of the filter comes off? Or do it stay on?
@@thomaswhite3043 the rubber stays on , but look inside of that rubber that is on the bottom of that filter to make sure that there is no rubber O ring inside of there , also make sure that the rubber from the old filter didn't come off the old filter and is stuck on the silver shaft where the old filter was and where the new filter goes. 1 egr valve stuck open. Problem goes away as truck warms up?
Also goes away by not starting the engine in idle so by pressing the gas pedal it causes the egr to close and after it starts right no problem unless engine starts to loose power

Can be a leak in the seals of the fuel pump? I listen a strange noise like air presure going out engine or nearly engine

I dismantled d12 engine by myself, there is no timing gear mark on crank and cam shaft?
Fuel pump and drive are gone need new one put in
My truck had bad cups fixed that and stopped doing it

This does not have anything to.do with the EGR system.
This is fuel related and either its starving for fuel when it tried to shut down and then comes back on or its bad/frozen injector.
I can assure you that can be egr problems. I have a 2005 Volvo with D12 engine that used to do the same thing. Replacing my egr valves fixed my problem.
@@PAT111 i had bad EGR valve, stuck open on my 2006 Volvo D12 and i had the check engine light and truck didnt do this, just because of the check engine light, the truck loses 20 percent of the power, but doesnt do anything like this.
This isn't EGR, it's AVU (exhaust brake controller).
damn man its got nothing to do with the fuel its your egr getting stuck i had the same problem couple of times

My truck was losing a lot of power and was doing same thing, I replaced egr and problems solved

it is not a fuel problem, it is a EGR valve. I had the same problem

EPG is actuating at 100% for warm hold (should be 70%)

@@TOPTIERUNVERSITY on the D12 it's on the left are (driver's, in North America) under the starter, all the way back by the flywheel housing. One electrical plug and two air lines. The line to the EPG is a snap in, so thread the fitting out, still attached to the line. Good luck!

remove injector and check o ring and copper washer i think it is damage thats why the pressure coming from combustion chamber pass to the fuel tunnel
that's stuck egr valve unhook your egrs behind a alternators and i bet you struck will start running smooth eventually you will need to change egr cause truck will derate

Release parking brake or apply >0% throttle, problem will go away. Will also go away when warmed up >170°F
EDIT: this cycles every 5 seconds with parking brake applied. Will cycle less frequently with parking brake released (I think 5 minutes). Will not occur over 0% throttle, because Warm Hold only functions @ idle
Exhaust/engine brake is probably weak, as well.
You describing in exact details what happens with my truck. I think its one of my egrs.
This is not an EGR problem, although I suppose an EGR can mimic it. I had this happen on one of mine for awhile, so I was about to figure it out. Conveniently, it stopped acting up, so I saved $600 on a new AVU

The AVU (air valve unit) under the starter (controls EPG/exhaust brake) is at fault. It's sending full 100% to exhaust brake when it should be sending 70% for warm hold function. Engine stalls until minimum rpm threshold, then ECM intervenes and brings idle back up, hence the smoke from the sudden fuel. 5 seconds later, the cycle repeats
@@trenteckhardt will there be check engine light due to bad EPG or not? because i have same symptoms but no check engine light
@@bsghilton267 I did not get a check engine light, nor any codes when I encountered it. It took me awhile to figure it out, and the temporary fix was to physically bump the idle up by propping the accelerator pedal slightly. I used a brake pedal depressor for this purpose, but anything will work

Have your injectors checked the same thing happened to me and they replaced the fuel pump and some fuel lines but the problem was not fixed. So we changed fuel injectors and the truck is running good again

some thing rung with fuel pump coz moter waz missing.only two reasons ......1 fuel pump or return fuel2 electrica could not pass all coil.my English wasn't good enough but in ur video i think fule pump could not match fuel with motor.its coz motor goon heat up or had Gass kit
