We cooked this to take to a garden party to celebrate the queen's platinum jubilee here in the UK, and it was a massive hit! Everybody loved it, and the whole cake was gone in no time. I highly recommend this recipe
I always make this for Christmas Eve supper! I use my cast iron skillet. I use the drained pineapple juice for the liquid in my cake. I also put a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple ring. There's only 4 of us so the leftovers are delicious for breakfast.
Ms. Phyllis I love your videos. You left a fine legacy, and will probably become even more famous in the years to come.. I am grateful your son is watching over and preserving your work
My mother used to make this quite often, we loved it.. I haven't had it in years.. it seems though that she made it in an electric skillet.. can't remember for sure.. I will ask her.. Thanks for the memories!
My grandma baked this for all of us every couple of weeks when we were growing up in the early seventies-lovely cake!! Your version is identical to ours! ❤️
hey Phyllis, I was so excited to see you DID do a video on Pineapple Upside Down Cake. This is the way my Mama used to do it right down to using the cast iron pan.. the only difference was she would add marchino cherries in the center of the pineapple pieces. This is one of my most favorite cakes. When asked what kind of birthday cake i want, this is always at the top of the list! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thinking of you Ms Phyllis on this Christmas Day 2019. I made this cake today for the 2nd time. I hope you're doing well & on the path to healing. Edit: RIP dear lady. Making this again for my daughter's birthday 4/2721.
My mom used to make these when I was little, and I love them dearly. Sometimes if she had them, she would put a maraschino cherry inside of the pineapple rings and also toss in some pecans. I am going to make one of these soon. Thank you for this one.
My Dad would always make me a pineapple upside down cake every year for my birthday. He would never show me how to make it. Now I know (thank you Miss Phyllis) He always wanted to make it his gift to me. I miss him. Thank you for sharing ;)
Wow you are such a talented Awesome chef :) This is my favorite all time cake since I was a wee one. My Mum used to make it for my birthday every year until I was 12. She had a bad accident when removing the cast iron skillet from the oven :( she wasn't feeling well and when she took it out it tipped and the hot pineapple juices came pouring over her wrists :( she had 3rd degree burns it looked so bad like she had tried to cut her wrists. I never again asked for a Pineapple upside down cake for my birthday :( I was terrified she would have another accident and I couldn't live with that. She passed away 12 years later and I still carry the guilt. On to happier things ...You are such a sweet person and I look forward to your videos everyday :) thank you so much
Hey Phyllis, I just got done making this recipe... delicious!!! 10 out if 10. And I never even considered myself to like pineapple, but I tell you, this is superb. Your videos are always a blessing, and I look forward to trying more recipes in the future, keep up the great work! :)
Yum! Pineapple Upside Down Cake! Haven't had it since my mother in law used to make it. Hers was so good. I think she made it the same as you, so I know it's good. YUM
Goodness gracious!! I jumped when she threw that cake over on the tray! 😂. Most people put the tray on top of the cake and then carefully turn it over. Great entertainment!!
Yummy. I've made plenty of these myself from scratch. Instead of the milk I use the pineapple juice that you poured out of the can. It makes it taste like pineapple on the inside too. Or you can use half pineapple and half milk.
I looked through your playlist and couldn't find a specific cake recipe. It's called "Wacky Cake". I've been making it since 1958, there are no dairy items in it at all but it makes a wonderful dark chocolate cake with an easily doubled recipe. But best of all you mix the whole thing up in the pan you are going to cook it in. I checked and it is listed in Google. It's pretty much the only type of cake I make n ow.
Phyllis, it was necessary for us to redo our kitchen. And I seem to have lost some of my handwritten recipes, most of which I got from gals who are no longer on this side of the grass, so I cannot ask for another copy! (I am still hoping to find them, but I am asking this just in case I do not find my upside down cake recipe). How big is your frying pan? Also, I have never used self rising flour. Is there a particular brand you recommend? Also, thanks for the idea about the pineapple sandwich! I never heard of that -- and I never thought of it -- but it sounds yummy! Thanks for everything.
I Love this cake. Phyllis, I was wondering if you have a recipe for the Boston Creme Pie Cake? If you do, would you please do a video sometime and show us how to make it. Thank You and have a Great Day! :)
Yummy! My favorite cake & 😊 use the same recipe ...great granma , granma & my mom all used same, so u know where I got my recipe 😊 ! And always in the cast iron skillet , make cornbread in it , too ! I'm checking out your older recipes , I'm missing you , Mr. Bucky & the furbabies, so this is what I do ...go to your older videos 😀 ! Bless you all ! ♥🐩🙏 🥛🍍🍵
The written recipe shows at time 9:41 on the video. Sorry, I don't have any recipes written down on my website for copying. You could just go to the time on the video, put the video on hold and make the cake by watching your screen that way you will not need to have it written down.
I had an extreme allergic reaction to cherries about 10 or twelve years ago so have not eaten cherries in any form since that time. I am planning to make cherry dumplings and make a video of the way my mother made them but I will not eat even a taste of them - they will all be for Mr. Bucky.
I apologize Phyllis I didn't know that. Thank you for the wonderful recipes and info on how you make it happen in the kitchen, it helps those of us who were not taught to cook. Enjoy the common sense talks also. Thanks.
No cherries, I'm unfortunately allergic to fresh cherries so I'm afraid to use any kind in my cooking. Cherries would be very pretty in the middle of each slice of pineapple. About 6 years ago I made a fresh cherry pie one Saturday afternoon and we had a piece for dessert after supper around 6:00 pm. Two hours later I found myself in the emergency room with the worst stomach ache you could imagine (I could have had a baby for the pain I endured that night). To add insult to injury I also had to endure a camera going down my throat and all the way into the first part of my small intestines. The doctor said it was the worst case of inflammation he had ever seen. I promised to never eat another cherry for the rest of my life and I have kept that promise just remembering the pain I endured that night. I did find out cherries are the most caustic of all fruits especially when fresh.
@@PhyllisStokes Wow, I don't blame you and I don't need no cherries on top! ...I didn't know that cherries were the most caustic of fruits. Your website and your videos are like finding a great treasure in my own backyard. Many thanks for the work you've done and your great talents and wisdom.
💜my dear...why didn't you put the plate (upside down) on top of the cake, then you put your hand on top of it , then you flip the cake over guiding your hand to turn over, then to the table.🤔 ?.......(she should of put the plate on top of the cake, then flip the skillet over )💜love ya 💜Vicky, can't wait to try it 😋💕
Hello Phyllis S. I made this cake in a spring form pan.Worked well. But, here is my comment. I had to cook the cake longer by about 10 minutes. I let it cool and placed it on a plate. My mouth is now watering to taste a piece. It was bad. THICK,GUMMY, STICKY AND NOT MUCH TASTE. THIS IS THE WORSE CAKE EVER.I FOLLOWED THE THE LIST.I DID NOT SIFT MY FLOUR.UNHAPPY, WILL NOT MAKE AGAIN.
An old old one!!! Still watching!
We cooked this to take to a garden party to celebrate the queen's platinum jubilee here in the UK, and it was a massive hit! Everybody loved it, and the whole cake was gone in no time. I highly recommend this recipe
Love this cake. My dad uses the juice in place of the water when making the cake. Adds some extra pineapple taste.
I miss you Miss Phyllis! Your recipes were THE BEST.
I always make this for Christmas Eve supper! I use my cast iron skillet. I use the drained pineapple juice for the liquid in my cake. I also put a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple ring. There's only 4 of us so the leftovers are delicious for breakfast.
hopetogether I love the idea of using the pineapple juice in the recipe. Thanks for the tip. God bless.
My Mother always put cherries in middle of pineapples. She also used the juice in the cake. Brings back memories.
These cakes are so simple to make, and delicious. Classic.
Ms. Phyllis I love your videos. You left a fine legacy, and will probably become even more famous in the years to come.. I am grateful your son is watching over and preserving your work
One stick of butter is always a good way to start any baking idea.
Oh, gosh-my auntie made this for special occasions…I’m so glad this video popped into my feed! ❤️

I believe that is the recipe my Mom made only she used crushed pineapple & then poured half & half over it when serving it. Wonderful
I missed you so much this holiday season 😞🙏🏾SIP

my favorite cake. I use the pineapple juice instead of milk and I put a maraschino cherry in the pineapple hole. looks so good .

Making this again Thanksgiving 2023.
Making it again 2/13/24 for my grandson's birthday 🎂.
Instead of milk I use the pineapple juice. Love a pineapple upside down cake!
My mom used to make these when I was little, and I love them dearly. Sometimes if she had them, she would put a maraschino cherry inside of the pineapple rings and also toss in some pecans. I am going to make one of these soon. Thank you for this one.
I missed out on the 50's, but really wish I'd have been born soon enough to experience them. Thanks so much for the "retropes"! : )
My Dad would always make me a pineapple upside down cake every year for my birthday. He would never show me how to make it. Now I know (thank you Miss Phyllis) He always wanted to make it his gift to me. I miss him. Thank you for sharing ;)
What a lovely person you dad must have been.
He really was ;) He raised me. A very good man.
I had been wanting to make this for months. I finally got around to it tonight! Delicious!
Yummy! My mom and grandma made this recipe. Happy childhood memories.
I absolutely love this recipe, you are an encouragement and inspiration Phyllis 💗💗💗
Looks so delicious and perfect. I also love making this with peaches!!
Miss Phyllis, how is it that Mr. Bucky doesn’t weigh 500 pounds with all your good home cooking? I know I would. God bless.
Phyllis Stokes Isn’t that always the way? Weight seems to fall off men, while we women struggle to lose an ounce.
Man that looks good. Thanks Ms. Phyllis.
This is my son's favorite cake. When he was a little guy, this was the cake he asked for on his birthday. 😀❤️😀💜😀
I was always taught to use reserved pineapple juice for the liquid in pineapple upside down cake. Yum - also put cherries 🍒 in the pineapple rings.

Do u know how long you beat the sugar until it was lemon color? Ty so much ! You r amazing!!!
Probably about 5 minutes with the mixer on high.
Awesome video!
I make a very similar cake, but here in California we like our maraschino cherries too. 😃

I ❤🍍🔄🍰

I think the frying pan is 10". I use White Lily self-rising flour.
Very pretty but I do think it would be prettier if the pineapple had the cherries in their centers, but it still looks very good. Thank you

Yummmm!!!
What size pan a 12inch skillet.😊
I attempted to make this recipe. I had 4 pineapple slices to to want to stay in my black iron skillet
Also it crumed up alot. Wonder what caused this?
So gooooood!! 😋🤤😁
Did Phyllis have a cookbook?
Yum just like my moms
Phyliss I only have a 10 inch cast iron skillet, will that work?
The 10 inch skillet will work for this cake.
Do you have the recipe for this cake? I can't write too well with RA. (rheumatoid arthritis)

Looks good! Just curious, but y'all never used cherries?

I'm sorry that happened to you. More for him I suppose, right?
Phyllis you forgot the cherries in the middle of the pineapple rounds.
no can do - I'm allergic to cherries.
I apologize Phyllis I didn't know that. Thank you for the wonderful recipes and info on how you make it happen in the kitchen, it helps those of us who were not taught to cook. Enjoy the common sense talks also. Thanks.
😆
I would use a full cup of brown sugar.
Yuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmm❤️👏
How big is your skillet?
I think that skillet is a 10".
Thank you
Phyliss, I'm just about to make this cake and realized all I have is buttermilk. Will that ruin it do you think?
Buttermilk in this cake will work well. It might even work better than regular milk.
Phyllis Stokes ok, thanks for the quick reply. Going to give it a whirl!!
🍍
And I love to use my cast iron skillet to bake pineapple upsidedown cakes in
Where’s the cherries in the middle of the pineapple rings, LOL. My mom used to do. She’s 96 now. Sorry Phyllis, just read you are allergic. Whoops
No cherries?
