I've just come across this interview . I was a student art the Keddleston Road campus of the Derby and District Colleges of Art and Technology from 1970 to 1973 . I frequented The Havana Nightclub often . My other haunts were the House Parties at Rose Hill Street , The Carib Nightclub , The Normaton Pub , The Seven Stars Pub , The Irongates Pub , The Dancehall in Swinburne , Tiffany's Nightclub , etc. I have fond memories of Ricky , the owner of the Havana Nightclub , as well as his bouncer , Slim . My love for reggae was developed right there in Derby . Thank you for the interview and the memories . Thank you for the nostalgia . Thank you for the walk down Memory lane .

I was a student at Derby Lonsdale College Of Art from 1980-81 and I have very clear memories of the place and of Enforcer. I used to go to The Havana regularly and remember seeing quite a few other sounds there as well as Enforcer. Seeing Shaka there for the first time in 1981 was a life changing experience for me. Shaka was playing with a new sound from Derby which I think was called Soul Symbolic, it was just one guy who had different boxes to usual ones, more like a PA set. They both sounded good but Shaka tore the place down and I’ve never heard music like that in my life.
I used to buy records from Black Star and recall seeing Lloyd in there sometimes. Probably Cliff too but I think I knew Lloyd a bit more. There was a very nice lady who worked in there sometimes and I’m now wondering if she was Lloyd and Cliff’s sister? If so then I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. She was very friendly and helpful whenever I came to the shop and I recall her asking if I wanted to come with them on a coach to see Enforcer playing in Birmingham. As a white guy, I always felt very welcomed by people on the reggae scene in Derby and I really appreciate that to this day.
There was another record shop in the town centre which wasn’t a reggae specialist but it carried a good selection. I can’t remember the name but it was run by two white guys, one was called Hector and he also DJ’ed under the name Hip Ki Do. I’m pretty sure he once played at The Havana with Enforcer but he didn’t have his own sound so he played on Enforcer’s set.
When I was at college we arranged for Enforcer to play our xmas party there but not at the student union, it was actually in one of the photography studios upstairs in the main college, a lot of people came including some of the lecturers and it was wicked.
I used to know Rudy a bit back then too, who’s mentioned in the video. My girlfriend at that time lived literally across the street to the Baseball Ground and I remember being at her place on Saturday afternoons and wondering if the windows would be smashed by the hooligans outside, lol!
My memory of Enforcer is exactly how Lloyd and Cliff describe it - crisp, heavy and sounding very good indeed. They could definitely hold their own with other big sounds.
I recall one time at The Havana with Enforcer and another sound whose name I forget though they may have been from Coventry. It ended up with some words being spoken between the two and I’m pretty sure Lloyd wouldn’t let the other sound get away with it so he started playing at the same time to drown the other sound out and so both were playing at the same time until the manager pulled the plug, lol.
I also remember a gold cup dance at a hotel with Enforcer and 2 other sounds from Derby, can’t remember who the others were but one might have been called Rema?
Another big tune I remember Enforcer playing a lot as well as Kunte Kinte was Jah Give Us The Power by Johnny Clarke on dubplate.
I was fascinated to hear about Cliff’s music producing, as I later got into production myself after leaving Derby and moving to London, so I’m wondering if Cliff ever released anything or if there are hidden gems in the archives which have never been released?
Those couple of years I lived in Derby played a huge part in my musical education and it’s fantastic to see you guys on film and hear all about your history. Blessed love to one and all.
