This is a 1971 color film made by Bert van Bork entitled "The Lumberman" was part of the "Our Changing Way of Life" series of films released by Encyclopedia Brittanica. The film looks at the seachanges that have come to the timber and logging industries (and more were to come as the environmental movement was in a nascent stage at the time this film was made). The film discusses the past and present of the life of a forest worker and not only how these workers’ lives have changed, but how the industry treats the forests themselves. EB Films presents, The Lumberman. The movie opens with an aerial view of mountains and forest - timber country in the Pacific Northwest. A map of the United States overlays the screen showing the millions of acres of commercial forest in the country: 31. Sweeping vistas of the forest 1:05. "Our changing way of life. The Lumberman." Produced by Encyclopedia Britannica Films. In collaboration with Gene E Martin, PhD, associate professor of geography at the University of Oregon. EBF-U.S. Geography Program Advisor, Arvin W. Hahn, PhD, Dean of Graduate Studies, at Concordia Teachers College (Illinois). The top of a tree is felled by a man with a chainsaw 1:40. The men use machines to stack the felled trees 2:15. Machines stack a 4-ton saw log with ease 2:40. A truck carries large logs down the road 3:05. Logs are held in a holding pond to keep them from drying out 3:30. Logs are loaded onto a train and move over a bridge 4:11. Bark is stripped off the logs by machine 4:40. Logs are rolled onto a conveyor belt and sawed into pieces 5:05. Picture of a pioneer woodsman with a hand axe 5:17. Modern lumber mill and shots of a business office with IBM punchcard computer in use. 5:35. A man talks about living in Wendling Oregon and watching progress take over the old Mills and put them out of business 6:35. Wendling Oregon is a ghost town. A man stands in a graveyard 6:46. Trucks carrying logs go through the city streets 7:25. Aerial view of sawmills and holding ponds 7:48. An overlay map comes on the screen and shows the West Coast cities involved in timber and logging 7:53. Holding pond is shown from an aerial view 8:00, dissolve to a shot of a modern suburb with rows of planned new homes. Today’s loggers can have families because they can commute to nearby suburbs and be with their wives and children 8:48. The logger drives to work in what appears to be a Chevy Nomad station wagon 9:30. The forest workers commute from the city to the forest and live a life in the suburbs with their families 9:50. A second Lumberman leaves his family eating breakfast cereal (10:05) and drives to work in what appears to be a Chevy pickup 10:25. A man chopping a tree, downed by hand with an axe 10:50. A man cuts down a tree with a chainsaw 11:05. Men punch into work 11:20. The lumberman makes plywood from thin sheets of wood glued together 11:45. A lumberman addresses the camera. “The day of the cut out and get out is gone”. He talks about how technology and planning have changed the logging and timber businesses 12:25. A man splits wood with a wood splitting machine 12:36. Forest rangers. The government / Department of Interior, owns two thirds of the forestland in the Pacific Northwest 12:50. After years of exploitation the timber industry works with government and national parks to manage the forest through conservation 13:00. Men take core samples of tree rings from different trees to track their growth 13:35. Sweeping vistas of the forest 14:02.

I planted trees up by Sprit Lake Washington in 71, then set chokers for a large outfit in Aberdeen. Did some falling for some gippo outfits. Good times.
Film was made in 1971. By 1978, even the "modern" methods mentioned in the film, were outdated and obsolete. The one log loads were gone and equipment was being designed for the tiny timber. The chainsaws were one of the most notable, 96" bars were replaced with 32" bars to match the trees. I was lucky to see and experience the end of the big wood.
I have seen one log loads going North on Interstate 5 in the late 1970s tho. Yup,! G-G 😃😃😁

My Great Grandfather made $75.⁰⁰ per day back around 1910 logging trees from the mountain top near Newman's Ridge in Tenn. Slide them down a hill and float them down the Clinch River. This was around the beginning of the 19th century. Crazy amount of money for the the time but it was HARD WORK

No doubt and funny you say that, I just sent an email of another logging video to my oldest friend saying the same thing. It was always a good day walking into class seeing the projector with a big reel on it and the screen down.
I set chokers both high lead and behind a skidder, worked on a falling crew, drove a log truck a bit, did heavy equipment repair and maintenance. Road crew. 11 years total until my 32nd birthday in 1989. Do Not Miss It.

This was early 60's, no way it was made in the 70's, I didn't see a vehicle newer than a 63 or 64
I'm going with mid-60s. That pretty red station wasn't new and is about a 1960 model, give or take a couple years.

I really think it was more of a compilation since it was made using timber companies film stock. I recognized both Bohemia and Weyerhaeuser people in both. It was published in 1971. the shovel loading the trucks was a late 60s American. Also, several of the tin hats shown were a model that came out in the late 60s I remember having to get a new hard hat to match the new safety standards.

Here in Georgia, 3 trees are supposed to be planted for everyone harvested. They generally harvest in about 20 years. The trucks cost a bit more these days.
Over here in Idaho we typically plant and harvest on 60-80 year cycles. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Replanting is required within 5 years and for every tree harvested there's about seven more growing to replace it, whether replanted or naturally seeded. Sustainable forest is definitely the future
@@HabeasJ I imagine the harvest cycle depends on the type of tree being used. Here in Georgia, it's mainly pine trees. There are 5 main species used, I think. I don't recall their names and could never tell them apart anyways.
